From Variety's article on their most anticipated movie performances of 2024: https://variety.com/lists/most-anti...es-2024/rashida-jones-in-the-blink-of-an-eye/
35 Rashida Jones - 'In the Blink of an Eye'
Rashida Jones has impressed many years with rousing acting turns in "On the Rocks" and "Celeste and Jesse Forever." Under the thumb of director Andrew Stanton (his first live-action outing since the disaster "John Carter" in 2012), this sci-fi drama, which follows three intertwined stories that explore the universe's history, is rumored to be quite strong. Also starring Kate McKinnon and Daveed Diggs, this will be one of two outings for the actress, who will also have a voice role in DreamWorks Animation's "B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations" due out later in 2024.
Rashida Jones was part of the original voice cast, along with other stars like Seth Rogen, Bill Murray, and Melissa McCarthy. B.O.O. was last scheduled to come out in June 2015, but was pulled from the schedule to avoid competition with Pixar's Inside Out.

Synopsis of the film (the original version that is):
B.O.O. (Bureau of Otherworldly Operations) is the super classified agency you've never heard of and certainly never seen. Dedicated to protecting humans from evil hauntings, the agents of B.O.O. have a secret weapon: they are ghosts themselves! Newbie agents Jackson Moss and his odd-ball partner, Watts, uncover a plot to destroy B.O.O. by the agency's Most Wanted Haunter. They must use every trick in their arsenal to defeat his powerful ghost army and save Earth from a ghostly fate.

Cancelled Movies Wiki has some interesting media from the development of the original version of the film including a VisDevReel, some concept art, and even some merch that managed to leak out: https://cancelled-movies.fandom.com/wiki/B.O.O.:_Bureau_of_Otherworldly_Operations#Videos

I vaguely remember hearing about this all those years ago. Interesting that it's coming back and I like the premise, but the main character designs are doing squat for me.

(Still holding out hope for Me and My Shadow.)

Wow now thats a deep cut. Good on Dreamworks for not completely memory holing it or anything.
Makes me wonder if there's a lot of other movies out there that got shelved for various reasons and will never see the light of day but would honestly probably be great in today's animation landscape.

Disney really should work back up Newt.

I guess if they're revisiting the concept from the ground up, sure.

That concept artwork makes it pretty clear why it was originally scrapped to begin with.

I always wanted to see that Henry Selick movie Disney canned. Shadow King I think it was.

What is dead may never die.

2024 slate is going to be pretty thin, so this might end up being a surprise hit. I know Dreamworks is still licking their wounds after Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. Hopefully this works out better.

With B.O.O. being suddenly announced for release after being dormant all this time (not back in production for retooling or being remade by a new crew, it's simply being released at all); I get the impression that this film was completed but not published. So DWA may simply be throwing the film out there as is.

It does make one wonder what prompted management to decide the film was worth releasing now, instead of keeping it buried (or going the WB-D route of using it as a tax write-off). As far as animated films go, DWA has at least three movies scheduled for release this year (Orion and the Dark in February for Netflix, and then the theatrical releases of KFP4 in March and Chris Sanders' Wild Robot in September), and Universal still has Despicable Me 4 from sister studio Illumation in July. So it's not necessarily like they need to pad out their film schedule like other studios may be looking to do (as a result of both COVID productions delays and the WGA/SAG strikes).

[Compare that to Disney where as far as their "core brands" go (the non-20CS stuff), they currently only have one Marvel film, one Pixar film, and a prequel to a live-action remake on their 2024 theatrical docket. Which is likely why they're giving Soul, Luca, and Turning Red (the Pixar films released direct-to-Disney+ in the US during the height of COVID) special theatrical releases throughout this spring season.]

Co-signed. Still bummed MaMS was junked, felt like a knock-on effect of traditional animation being hosed out of Western theatrical animated features during the early 2010s.

If anything, it's wild that in the current age of stylized CG animation, we haven't seen a film with a similar premise announced for production.

Looking at those production stills, animation and pencil tests that have been uploaded over the years makes me wish this film could've been saved, but that's how the film industry is sometimes.

A nine year old film getting resurrected, wow, rare you see something like that happen.

Honestly, plain misreporting of the film being brought back makes way more sense than anything else, given the circumstances.

Guess the thread may as well be locked with an appropriate title update/clarification.

Whelp, I guess it did seem rather weird to revive a 9 year old film anyway. Espicially in this current market that's absolutely hostile to new IPs.

Cool.

Even when DreamWorks animation fails, it's at least trying to do something interesting.

Now resurrect Alma and Me & My Shadow.

And Disney brings back Gigantic.

im curious how they chose this movie to say that it arose from the dead, though. like, someone who worked on the movie was pissed it still hasnt come out, so they lied to Variety?
