      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

If Avenue 5's maiden voyage isn't as smooth as its creative clout implies, it's still a hilarious step in a completely new -- while still enjoyably caustic -- direction for creator Armando Iannucci.

Maura Johnston Boston Globe Proved to be funny enough, a half-hour-ish distraction from the Sunday scaries with snort-worthy one-liners, ominous asides about the future, and a sterling cast topped by Laurie and Gad. Aug 6, 2020 Full Review Liz Shannon Miller AV Club These aren't just bad choices, but frustrating ones-because on balance, it is so much more fun to watch a TV show where the majority of the characters are as smart, if not smarter, than the average viewer. Rated: B Mar 17, 2020 Full Review Deborah Ross The Mail on Sunday (UK) I still don't know what it is or what it wants to be. I can only say it has the feel of something [Armando Ianucci] scribbled on a napkin in breaks from working on a project he actually cared about. Rated: 1/5 Jan 27, 2020 Full Review Christopher Hooton NME (New Musical Express) Packed to the titanium rafters with gags, Avenue 5 falls somewhere between The Good Place and Veep, but with a shiny Black Mirror skin... Rated: 3/5 Jul 13, 2021 Full Review Kylie Klein-Nixon Stuff.co.nz A biting social satire. Apr 13, 2020 Full Review Dana Aklilu Film Inquiry Avenue 5 is adrift, not exactly voicing a perspective that feels fresh or relevant. It doesn't know what it wants to be, and it doesn't know where it wants to go, leaving it stuck in an unsatisfactory middle. Mar 25, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

K F Great show, great writing, great casting. On the same level of "Veep," "In the Loop," Arrested Development..." Verty mart and very funny. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/12/23 Full Review Science C Watched the first episode. The premise is too stupid for me to give it a second chance, and I didn't find any of the characters the least bit entertaining with the exception of the guy who plays Jared on Silcon Valley. Did the writers of this show even pass high school physics? You can't knock a ship off course from a force that happens entirely inside the ship. All internal forces cancel out. And what the hell is a spaceship doing without thrusters for course corrections? I know it's supposed to be a comedy, but this too stupid to hide behind that excuse. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/18/23 Full Review Gareth v While not to the same standard as the The Thick Of It or Veep, Armando Iannucci's sci-fi comedy is still a funny journey. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/24/23 Full Review Corey W Avenue 5's concept might be too complicated to land all the laughs that are expected from a writing and acting team as strong as this one. I'll tune in for season 2, but unless the way has been paved for sharper writing and stronger jokes, I doubt I'll be back for season 3. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Jim J Loved it. Hope they keep making more. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Stephen K I found the first episode of Season 1 by chance after it appeared on Netflix and decided to give it a try. I went in completely cold, but I got my first belly laugh within the first few minutes during the gravity-flip sequence. I'm not sure whether they tilted the set, or had everyone on pulleys and wires, but the sight of all the record-breaking Yoga Class people sliding helplessly toward the bulkhead had me roaring! The script is a lot to take in, with all the trademark Iannucci verbal sparring. It's very wordy, but I've always appreciated his sense of the ridiculous and as the season developed, his precise dissection of how utterly irrational Human Beings behave in pretty much any given situation is, as you would expect, gleefully savage. Some of the situations are unashamedly contrived, but thoroughly enjoyable in my opinion. The cast is top-notch and everyone involved shines (God knows, just saying the scripted lines is challenging enough), but mix in impeccable comic timing together with effects and stunts and the whole thing is quite amazing. All the characterisations range from silly-but-endearing to totally monstrous and you admire every single one of those actors, because this thing certainly makes them work for the money, but I also get the sense that they love every single second! I've not been bored by it once so far and long may that be the case! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
