    name, from the adjective augustus ‘great, magnificent’ (from augere ‘to increase’). This word was adopted as a title by the Roman emperors, starting with Octavian (Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus), the adopted son of Julius Caesar , who assumed it in 27 bc and is now generally known as the Emperor Augustus . This name, together with Augusta , was revived in England in the 18th century, but it has now again declined in popularity.
