Welsh: from the personal name Tudur, a derivative of British Celtic Toutorīx, literally ‘people’ + ‘king’. It has sometimes been taken as a Welsh equivalent of Latin Theodorus, from Greek Theodōros ‘gift of God’ (see Theodore ), for which the usual Welsh form is Tewdwr.

History: The Tudor royal family, English sovereigns from the accession of Henry VII in 1485 to the death of Elizabeth I in 1603, were of Welsh origin, being descended from Owain ap Maredudd ap Tudur, who held lands at Penmynydd in Anglesey.
