Quality and quantity in the one place.
As with the museum, the art gallery surprised me. I may have expected less of Adelaide being a small city, but they really do know how to do quality. Many interesting exhibits. Food cafe with fancy dishes. Andy Warhol exhibition was on, but we didn’t have time to see it. Well worth the visit if you have an eclectic interest in art.

    Well curated art gallery
This is one of my favorite art galleries in the world and I'm constantly amazed with the ease and elegance the curator puts together seemingly disjointed artworks to form something very special. Yes we did check out the Kahlo exhibition and of course it was amazing and bursting with colour - you get to see what influenced Frida and Diego, see some of their artworks and even some of the colorful outfits Frida was so famous for. But don't miss out on the rest of the galleries amazing collection, from the traditional to the modern and provocative, all put together in a very unique and thought provoking way. Such a beautiful place!

    Get your art fix here
I didn't spend very long here. There is a comprehensive collection of contemporary and traditional art. Some lovely bronze work and abstract stuff (I loved the photos of the orange balls in the air and may have a go at recreating it). It would have been nice to know more about some of the exhibits rather than a curt statement of the name of the artist with date of birth and death. Conveniently right next to the South Australian museum.

    At Gallery of South Australia
North Terrace has the Art Gallery, State Museum, State Library and Parliament House and all are free. The Art Gallery of SA was built in 1867 and is a State Heritage Place. The William Bragg bust statue and Live of the Stars statue is in front. It has over 45,000 works of art and only the National Gallery of Victoria is larger. The University of Adelaide is also close by

    First time in Adelaide highlight
I happened to arrive a few minutes before the 11 am free guided tour. Really enjoyed my time here. Smaller than expected, but they have a wide range of art from different time periods. Highly recommend stopping in.

    Diverse collection
I enjoyed my visit to the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA). There are many rooms with a variety of exhibits. Their major temporary exhibit was "Taranthi: Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Arts". I liked the Coiled Pandanus Baskets from Gunbalanya, NT. As part of Taranthi, they had a major exhibit of Vincent Namatjira's works. (He is the great-grandson of Albert Namatjira, a talented Aboriginal artist.) "Australia in Colour" showed 21 portraits of famous people, including a self-portrait of the artist. He had also created several interesting and unique portraits of the royal family.

    Not just paintings!
This is a well set out gallery. Each room has a theme with good explanations about the exhibits. It has examples of ceramics, sculpture (including a Rodin collection) and glass which relate to the theme in each room. The paintings are dominated by Australian pastoral scenes but there are also some European examples. The exhibits are well spaced out so that there are no overcrowding hot spots. Well worth visiting.

I usually love this gallery and was keen to take my international visitor. Staff were helpful and friendly. But whoever has arranged the display most recently has failed dismally. The juxtaposition of indigenous artworks with classic old paintings just clashed. It seemed like there had to be an indigenous piece amongst every collection. This created for me a sense of discordance and tension that distracted from the art. By contrast, the Japanese pieces displayed in the same place together created a peaceful atmosphere where the different pieces were complimentary and revealed a story. Perhaps the curator wanted to disturb and appal with the horrible horse, and the random groupings on the wall. So disappointed.

When I walked through the main entrance. I received a warm welcome, as well a map and a thorough explanation of the layout of the art gallery. I really enjoyed all of the art work there.
