      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Some of the evil magic is gone as this trilogy capper dispenses with most of the scares, but Bruce Campbell's hammy charm and Sam Raimi's homage to classic visual effects make for a fun enough adventure.

jacob We need more old school horror movies back in theaters. It was great seeing it among fans. Everyone laughed and enjoyed it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/30/23 Full Review E R Very good movie, have been watching it many times and never gets old. Matter of fact, I watch to put me in a good mood sometimes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Alec B I understand the argument that maybe the comedy goes a bit too far here but I'm not sure I completely agree with it. Campbell again gives a marvelous performance that's appropriately cartoonish. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Me D Though becoming very different from its predecessors, it's the freshest and funniest one. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/24 Full Review Bryan L I absolutely love this film and it stands up over time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review Lou T Ash is back, but this time, horror takes a backseat to comedy as our hero finds himself on a whimsical time travelers adventure. Slightly rewriting the end of Evil Dead 2, Ash is now a prisoner instead of the leader, but his antics quickly earn him respect once again. While this is far from the horror of the first 2, it does a great job pivoting into more of an adventure film. The story is fun and Bruce Campbell is having a blast galavanting around the middle ages, destroying the dead. With slapstick comedy throughout, it does get a little exhausting and the Three Stooges level jokes often fall flat. When the jokes land they're very funny, but when the humor is reduced to elongated slapstick scenes, it starts to feel like it's losing it. As a whole, the story, acting, and action triumph over the lackluster comedy and this is another wacky chapter in the story of Ash vs. The Evil Dead. Peter Besas Variety Blending almost nonstop violence with humorous parody, Sam Raimi’s latest excursion into horror-kitsch should prove a crowd-pleaser for the mall trade and perhaps a mite beyond. Mar 31, 2023 Full Review Steven Rea Philadelphia Inquirer Replete with thumping horse hooves, the battle cries of lusty men and the banshee screams of the living dead, Raimi's movie comes at you with a noisy, jokey swagger. Its hero even says "groovy" and gets away with it. Rated: 3/4 Mar 31, 2023 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune Here's the problem: Bruce Campbell's character is a complete stiff, and so is everyone else he meets who isn't a special effect. The result is that we couldn't care less who wins any battle in the movie no matter how inventively photographed. Rated: 1.5/4 Mar 31, 2023 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ...a daft but enjoyable romp…catnip for fans of Campbell, this is probably his finest hour, making a droll, lantern jawed hero with a deft penchant for quips and an ability to accessorise Rated: 3/5 Feb 9, 2024 Full Review Bob Ross Tampa Tribune Bruce Campbell, the rugged star-survivor of The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2: Dead Before Dawn, takes his most incendiary trip yet in Army of Darkness, a hilariously extravagant sequel to those low-budget, tongue-in-cheek fright flicks. Rated: 3/4 Mar 31, 2023 Full Review Joe Baltake Sacramento Bee With virtually no narrative to connect its wall-to-wall mindless action sequences, Army of Darkness is either a botched attempt at some kind of elaborate allegory or a botched attempt to bring comic-strip panels to life.
