Army Of Anyone

About Army Of Anyone

Army Of Anyone was a rock supergroup formed by Filter frontman Richard Patrick, the DeLeo brothers from Stone Temple Pilots and former David Lee Roth Band drummer Ray Luzier. The band was named after their past troubles – Patrick was recently out of rehab for substance abuse problems, and the DeLeo brothers split with STP frontman Scott Weiland over his substance issues. Patrick explained, “We are all in the fight of life together, united in an army of anyone.”

In 2004, Patrick had asked the DeLeo brothers for musical input on Filter’s then-upcoming fourth album. During this time, the three wrote the song “A Better Place” and Patrick called the experience “so compelling that I knew I had to be in a band with them”.

David Lee Roth Band drummer Ray Luzier was recruited and the band recorded over thirty songs at The Village studios in Santa Monica with producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, KISS, Jane’s Addiction). The band signed with Firm Music (a then-new label created by the management company The Firm).

Their debut single “Goodbye” was released October 2006. Its iTunes release was a 99-cent ‘3-for-1 EP’ that included the song, its music video and a podcast featuring interviews with the band members. It peaked at #3 on the US Mainstream Rock Songs Chart.

The band’s first and only album Army Of Anyone followed in December and peaked at #56 in the US. The band toured, playing songs from their collective past like Filter’s “Take a Picture” and Stone Temple Pilots' “Interstate Love Song” in addition to their own music. At the time, Patrick told Billboard:

Filter is not a priority in my life right now. Who knows. I don’t live in a world of absolutes. I take one day at a time. But right now, today, I see myself being in this band for a long time and making many records with them. This band is my priority.

In some press releases, Patrick was even listed as “ex-Filter”. The band toured the US throughout late 2006, then headlined The SnoCore 2007 Tour with Hurt. A follow-up single “Father Figure” was a minor rock hit that spring.

Later that year, Patrick returned to working on Filter’s fourth album, the DeLeo brothers reunited with Weiland in STP, and Luzier joined Korn. The band has been inactive since. In 2011, Patrick shared a shred of hope for potential future plans:

It’s basically this simple: Robert (DeLeo) has a studio in his basement where he can totally do his old-fashioned kind of classic sound. They can write and record at any moment in time, they can get Ray Luzier in to play drums and I can take it for a week or two and write vocals or sing it. … We’re alive, we talk. Dean and I are constantly in communication.
