Biography
Archduke of Austria, and a member of the Tuscan branch of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine.
He was a son of Archduke Karl Salvator, Prince of Tuscany and his wife Princess Maria Immaculata of Bourbon-Two-Sicilies. He was a cavalry General in the Imperial and Royal (k.u.k.) Austro-Hungarian Army. He received an honorary doctorate in medicine from the University of Innsbruck for his work with the Red Cross during World War I and was a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
He married first, in Ischl on 31 July 1890, Archduchess Marie Valerie of Austria (daughter of Franz Joseph I of Austria and his wife Elisabeth in Bavaria). They had ten children.
He married second, morganatically in Vienna on 28 April 1934, Melanie Freiin von Riesenfels, without issue.
Franz Salvator also had an illegitimate son by Princess Stephanie von Hohenlohe.
Franz Salvator died on 20 April 1939, aged 72, in Vienna.

Hoheit Karl Salvator, Großherzogs von Toskana, und dessen Gemalin der Frau Großherzogin, Maria Immaculata, Tochter weiland Sr. Majestät Ferdinand II., Königs beider Sizilien, an."
(Translation: From Altmünster near Gmunden is reported: On the 22nd of December, the thunder of 101 cannons announced that on the previous evening at 9 o'clock, a prince was born to His Highness Karl Salvator, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and his wife, the Grand Duchess, Maria Immaculata, the daughter of His Majesty Ferdinand II, King of Two Sicilies).
