Product Description
When we first meet New York hedge-fund magnate Robert Miller on the eve of his 60th birthday, he appears the very portrait of success. But behind the gilded walls of his mansion, Miller is in over his head, desperately trying to complete the sale of his trading empire to a major bank before the depths of his fraud are revealed. Struggling to conceal his duplicity from loyal wife Ellen and brilliant daughter and heir-apparent Brooke, Miller is also balancing an affair with French art-dealer Julie Cote. Just as he is about to unload his troubled empire, an unexpected, bloody error forces him to juggle family, business and crime with the aid of Jimmy Grant, a face from Miller's past. One wrong turn ignites the suspicions of NYPD Detective Michael Bryer, who will stop at nothing in his pursuit. Running on borrowed time, Miller is forced to confront the limits of his own moral duplicity. Will he make it out before the bubble bursts?

I will leave the subsequent events for you to discover when you watch the film, which I highly recommend. The film turns into a psychological thriller, in which everybody, in subtle realistically dishonest ways, participates in a massive cover-up and decides to live with it.
Although he had some film experience before, this was the first feature film which Nicholas Jarecki both wrote and directed.
But no.
This film quickly turns in to a very tight thriller once Gere accidentally kills his mistress by falling asleep at the wheel. He covers his tracks, the police are on his trail, and part of us wants to see him get away with it. Partly because, in his shoes, we'd want to be absolved in such an accident too. But also because Richard Gere is so damn likeable even when he's playing someone fairly scummy. Yet as the plot reveals more and more how far that streak of scum goes, the part of us that wants to see him get his comeuppance begins to overtake the other that was reluctantly rooting for him.
Simultaneously, we start to realize 'Arbitrage' isn't just a thriller. That aspect never dissipates, but makes up only one-third of the real story. This is what elevates it to excellence in my book. Gere doesn't just fight the law, but wages battles in business and his own family. It's nothing short of masterful how all three threads are weaved together so seamlessly, and in true noir fashion there are no heroes to be found in any of them. As we start to distance ourselves from Gere we keep looking for the "good guys" somewhere, anywhere, but at every turn who we thought we were dealing with turns out to be someone else. No one wears a white hat in this movie. Everything is in shades of gray in the best way. And at some point half or three-quarters of the way through, you'll begin to predict these little twists all the while hoping against hope that they won't come. What we're left with is a scathing character study of a Wall Street man, the type that likely still litter the place in real life. Hard truths about our society. And questions of morality some of us would be afraid to ask ourselves while others are thankful they don't have to.
I only wish it had a more memorable title than 'Arbitrage,' so more would know about this brilliant film!

How each and every choices that you make dictate the next move you will make and isn't affecting you only but the people surrounding you..
I think Mr. Gere is getting better and better with age.
I didn't find the commentaries quite that good though it might be interesting to people in the industry.
