Halloween parties back in Camden were far different than this one. There were less gowns and dignitaries and more kegs and grinding co-eds. At least at the ragers back in school, he was able to drink cheap beer, smoke pot, and knock back m&ms by the handful instead of soberly working the door on one of the biggest party nights of the year. Ethan leaned back on the doorway, taking a quick look at his phone out of the corner of his pocket. Just a couple more hours until he could escape to his room and catch up on some much needed sleep. While fighting the urge to once again look at his phone, he saw the princess pass him. He opened the door  and followed her out into the autumn night. “I’m sorry. I really don’t mean to bother you - but you guys aren’t really allowed to be out here on your own.”

Anna set her hands on the ledge of the balcony, taking a deep breath. Before the princess could enjoy the peace and quiet, she head a voice, causing her to turn around. Her eye’s does eyed, she nodded, letting her hands fall to her side, “It’s no bother at all. I understand, I suppose I’m just not used to all of… this.” Anna couldn’t find the words to describe how she had felt, being sent to a country she was unfamiliar with with rarely anyone she knew, having to change her entire lifestyle for reasons beyond her control. It was often too much for the crown princess, but understood her place, and that she couldn’t be reckless with her choices.

For a man his size, Callister was trying to hide during the event and it was not easy. Why he had blindly agreed to the first suggested costume was beyond him as he stayed tucked in a corner outside with a mug of coffee warming his hands. He could handle crowds, dammit, but dressed to the minimal degree and uncomfortable with it? Yes, he hid and watched the faux-angel seem to seek the same. Recognizing her, he cleared his throat and took a step closer so he might be seen. “Taking a pause from rescuing the allergic?” he joked quietly.

Anna’s head turned as she heard the familiar voice of Callister’s. Her eyes widened slightly at his costume, thinking that he must be feeling awfully chilled in the October weather. It was showing more skin than she had ever been used to, even in the midnight light. Anna shook her head at the man’s joke, a smile forming on her face, “I just hope you’ve been staying away from any pumpkins this evening. They do seem to be one of the highlights of this time of year.” While Poland celebrated Halloween to the fullest extent, Anna had not grown following the traditions of it, making it her first year of actually celebrating the holiday.

Mingle, smile, nod. Smile, mingle, nod. Nod, smile, mingle. It was like she was stuck in a never-ending loop of socializing and at this point her cheeks were starting to hurt. Had anyone expressed to her the magnitude of which the ball would be she would have thought they were joking. She couldn’t remember the last time there had been so many people to interact with. Many of which she had to take their identity simply by their word because their face was covered in some way or another. Stepping out of the stuffy walls of the castle she took a deep inhale. Only spotting the angel on the exhale. “Seems like we both needed a break from the commotion. Great minds do think alike” She offered, feeling a slight twinge of guilt that she was encroaching on someone else’s escape.

It wasn’t that Anna felt overwhelmed socializing, it was the amount of it she was required to do. She had always been very reserved growing up, always the child that didn’t know how to let a word out. Everyone around her thought it was adorable, that such a powerful young girl would rather read books than be adorned by other royals. Not much had changed, as there certainly was a piece of that little girl in Anna today. As she great the voice of the woman in gold, she offered her a small smile, “It seems we did. I suppose I’m not very used to a gathering of this size. We certainly didn’t have many of these in my country. It can be very intimidating.”

She had known, always, in the back of her mind, that yet another ball would not be the resolution she wanted for her troubles. Those she had made up, those she had willingly gotten herself mixed up into, and those she’d allowed to fester, almost by accident. There would never be a fairy tale ending story where love could cure everything, made things right again – much less give her something she was unworthy of. Yet, the part of her that still believed, had still expected something that would never ultimately take place – and had made her believe enough to try.

“Oh, my – I’m sorry to have intruded upon you,” Sabrina let out in a rushed breath, even though there was no way someone wouldn’t have seen the Princess, judging by the color of her gown and how it stood out at night. She dropped her body into a curtsy, before taking a step back, even as she flinched while looking at the lights coming from inside the party. “Are you alright, your Highness? Do you require anything?” she asked, unable to both leave the girl alone and return to the others.

Anna thought that she had made the mistake of picking a costume that made her stand out, rather than blend in as she desired. As she heard the voice of another woman, Anna unconsciously tensed up. A smile formed on her face, fake, but gentle nonetheless. “You’re quite alright. there’s no trouble at all.” The formalities of being princess weren’t exactly Anna’s favorite thing, so when the girl across her dipped into a curtsy, she couldn’t help but feel awkward, almost uncomfortable by the gesture. “Please, there is no need for the formalities. Call me Anna.”

OPEN STARTER

Anna had always felt overwhelmed by these big events. Getting dressed was the easiest part, but the talking, the interacting never came easy to her. She had felt out of place all night. Despite her beautiful angel outfit, she didn’t feel even half as graceful and elegant as some of the women in the room. Anna found herself sneaking outside, without a guard by her side, just to get a breath of fresh air. The moon was full and her eyes looked up into the dark sky, the time approaching midnight. For the first time all night, the angel was alone, relief washing over her body as she smoothed out her hair.

kala-paswan‌:

Kala had been sitting in her room with the window open, enjoying the cool night air while she sketched new designs that had come to her during the day. It didn’t take long for her however to feel the need to go outside and enjoy the fresh air personally. It was too beautiful a night to spend it cooped in her room, not when she could be out wandering the garden. This time she was prepared enough to actually think to stop and grab a jacket before she headed outside, well aware of the guard following shortly behind her. Her eyes were on the sky as she wandered through the familiar maze of flowers, she hadn’t even realized the girl sitting among the flowers. She glanced down when she heard the voice, a distracted smile on her lips. “Hmm? Oh yes, it is a beautiful night.”

Anna didn’t exactly have the best experience talking to people. She had grown up completely sheltered, only really able to leave the palace once she had turned 18. By then, her social experience had been left up to her limited interactions with royals and officials who visited Poland and what she thought the world was, according to her books at least. And after she became of age, she found herself gravitating towards children, wanting to help them, which didn’t do much for her social skills. Regardless, she always tried her best. even if it was just hopeless rambling. “It is my first night here, I have to admit the gardens do remind me of home.”

Zoey Deutch for Who What Wear (July 2018)

Ever since news of the costume ball had gotten out the castle buzzed with talks possibilities for costumes. Though the holiday had Irish origins and was popularized by the Americans it seemed to be a norm among every walk of life that had taken up residence in the castle. He’d heard that the Spanish princess brought in one of the town’s most popular seamstresses to throw something together for her at this last minute. Kaan, personally, didn’t get what all the fuss was about. He gave little thought as to what his costume would be and wouldn’t truly take it into deep consideration until the very last minute. Though he found himself curious as to what his future bride was dreaming up.

She hadn’t been in her rooms- when he checked, which seemed to be a regular occurrence. So his next best bet was where he found her last time- the gardens. He strolled, seemingly casually, through the gardens before hearing the voice that caused him to stop in his tracks. Gears shifting from searching for his betrothed to the petite, mahogany haired princess before him. “And even more so with you in it.” He remarked playfully, a hand pressed slightly against his chest. “It seems to be the main attraction of the castle. Not the place to be if you ever need a moment alone.”

image

Anna blushed at the slight compliment. Growing up in the castle her life, Anna was extremely sheltered and had seemingly limited social skills, so it made sense that any of the smallest compliments made her uncomfortable. “Oh, uh, thank you.” She looked upon the garden as he spoke, appreciating it’s beauty, “That’s a shame, I was rather looking forward to somewhere with such peacefulness.”
