Irene I. Widdecombe Meservey, obituary

CUSHING — Irene I. Widdecombe Meservey, 81, died peacefully, Friday, September 9, 2022 at the Sussman House in Rockport. Born in Damariscotta, June 7, 1941 she was the daughter of Ernest, Sr. and Mildred
Collamore Eaton.

At the age of 9, Irene moved with her family to St. George where she was educated and was a 1959 graduate of St. George High School.

Following high school, Irene married William Stillman Widdecombe on August 28, 1964. Together they raised two children.

Always a hard worker, Irene held a full time job as an income maintenance specialist with the Department of Human Services for the State of Maine for over 27 years. In 1994 she was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for the State of Maine. After retiring from the State of Maine, Irene began employment at Pen Bay Medical Center where she was employed as a receptionist for over 13 years. In 2004, she was named Employee of the Month in February. Later she worked for two years at Wal-Mart.

On October 15, 2016, Irene married Raymond Meservey at the Children’s Chapel in Rockport.

As a younger woman, Irene enjoyed staying busy as a member of the Puritan Rebecka Lodge in Tenants Harbor, and later with the Mystic Rebekah Lodge in Warren.

She will be sadly missed by all who loved her.

Predeceased by her first husband; a granddaughter, Mabel Marie Schmiz in 2001; her brother and sister-in-law, Ernest Eaton, Jr. and his wife Brenda; and a step-son William Widdecombe; Irene is survived by her husband Raymond Meservey of Union; her daughter, Annette Schmiz and her husband John of Union; her son, David N. Murphy and his wife Kathy of Jay, VT; her step-children, Robert J. Widdecombe of Hawaii, Sabrina Widdecombe of Texas; her sister, Lorna Pease and her husband Harlan of Rockport; four grandchildren, Laurie S. Richards and her husband Neil, John J. Schmiz, Dawn M. Waters and her husband Lenny, Steven M. Murphy and his significant other Kassy; three great-grandchildren, Abigail M. Richards, Kathryn M. Waters, Emily Irene Murphy; eight nieces and nephews; and a large extended family.

A memorial service will be held Friday, September 23, 2022, at 11 a.m., at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. Interment will follow at Achorn Cemetery.
