Biography

The House of York crest.
Anne (York) Howard is a member of the House of York.

Anne of York, born on 2 November 1475 at the Palace of Westminster in London and baptized in Westminster Abbey,[1] was the daughter of Edward IV,[2] by the time of her birth securely King of England, and of his Queen, Elizabeth Woodville.[3] [4] On 5 August 1480 her father concluded a marriage treaty with the Archduke Maximilian by which Anne would be married to his son, Philip. [5]

Her father died on 9 April 1483 when Anne was seven years old. The heir to the throne was her brother, Edward, then 12 years old and resident with his council at Ludlow. As he and his party made their way south to join his mother in London Edward was taken in charge by the dead kings brother, Richard Duke of Gloucester, who claimed that the Queen's family was planning to seize power. Elizabeth immediately withdrew into sanctuary at Westminster with her younger son, Richard Duke of York, and her daughters. [6] Having persuaded Elizabeth to allow her younger son to join his brother, Gloucester then proclaimed that the marriage of Edward IV and Elizabeth was void owing to a pre-contract and therefore his brothers children were bastards.[7] Gloucester was crowned King as Richard III on 3 July 1483. [8]Anne's marriage contract was broken. [5]

On 1 March 1484 Elizabeth agreed to leave sanctuary and submit to Richard on the understanding that he would not molest her daughters and would support them and find them appropriate husbands. [7] He was as good as his word and, that same year, Anne was betrothed to Thomas Howard, son of Thomas Howard and his first wife, Elizabeth Tilney. [5] The Howards were a family of no particular distinction but Thomas Howard's grandmother was Margaret Mowbray, descendant of the FitzAlans, the Bohuns and Edward I, probably as good a match as could be hoped for in Anne's reduced circumstances.

Henry Tudor invaded England in 1485, defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field on the 22nd of August and was crowned as Henry VII on the 30th October. Then, fulfilling a promise he had made before the invasion, he married Anne's eldest sister, Elizabeth, on the 18th January 1486.[9] Anne's fortunes were on the rise. In 1486 she carried the chrisom (the cloth used to cover the infant's head and prevent the consecrated oil from rubbing off) [10] at the Christening of the new prince, Arthur Tudor, her nephew, and again in 1489 for her niece, Margaret. [5] Her mother died in 1892. Anne was present with her sisters, apart from Elizabeth who was again enciente, and Cecily, when she was buried beside her husband in St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. [11]

She was finally married to Thomas Howard [12] on the 4th February 1494/5.[1][13][2] He too had seen some changes in his fortunes for in 1483 his grandfather, John Howard, had been elevated to the peerage as Duke of Norfolk by Richard III. The new Duke died fighting for his King at Bosworth Field in 1485. The Duke's son, Thomas, was attainted and clapped in the Tower. He was released in 1489 and his Earldom of Surrey restored, but it was not until 1514 that Surrey was created Duke of Norfolk. Anne's husband, the younger Thomas took the courtesy title of Earl of Surrey with Anne as his Countess. [14]

Thomas and Anne are said to have had four children only one of whom, Thomas, lived very long and none survived their mother. [13]

Anne died on 23 November 1511 and was buried at Thetford Priory in Norfolk. [5] [4] [2] At the dissolution her remains were transferred to St Michael the Archangel, Framlingham, Suffolk.[1] [15]

Thomas Howard is her son:

Quote from http://tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/ThomasHoward(3DNorfolk).htm :

"Although Thomas and Anne had a number of children, none lived to maturity. The longest lived, Thomas, was born about 1497, and died Aug 1508, buried in the Howard Chapel at Lambeth. Anne herself seems to have suffered poor health, and died early, for consumption, in 1512. After seventeen years of marriage, Thomas was left a childless widower."
