The Frasier reboot's door will always be open for Niles to appear, but Kelsey Grammer cautions about the harsh truth about David Hyde Pierce's possible return. With the first 10 episodes of the Frasier reboot now in the can, Grammer and his team are already working towards its sophomore year on Paramount+. Not much has been revealed about what to expect from the Frasier reboot season 2, but one big hope remains the same for those who loved the original series — seeing Pierce back as Niles.

As part of Deadline's Contenders TV panel, Grammer addresses the possibility of Niles appearing in the Frasier reboot season 2. Despite being invited to be part of the revival, Pierce, as well as Daphne actor, Jane Leeves, opted out of partaking in the project. This forced Grammer to re-evaluate their original plans. While Pierce is always open to popping up in the Paramount+ project, Grammer candidly reveals the harsh truth about his possible cameo. Read his full quote below:

If he would come back we would probably find a way to do that but you know, it probably wouldn't be more than an episode.

Why The Frasier Reboot Needs Niles (Even Just For A Cameo)

Pierce's Niles Is Sorely Missed In The Frasier Reboot.

Close

Pierce as Frasier's younger and snootier brother, Niles, arguably stole the Cheers spinoff.

Despite having a titular character, the original Frasier was very much an ensemble series. John Mahoney's Martin, Peri Gilpin's Roz, and Leeves' Daphne were vital parts of its success. That said, Pierce as Frasier's younger and snootier brother, Niles, arguably stole the Cheers spinoff. The actor was so brilliant in the role that it's difficult not to miss him in the reboot. The revival's creatives know that they cannot simply replace him, so they don't even attempt to do that. Instead, they wait and hope that Pierce changes his mind about reprising Niles.

Aside from just seeing him back, there's also a narrative need for Niles in the Frasier reboot. For starters, the death of Martin should have kept the Crane brothers physically together. Losing a father is difficult, and Frasier, as a single man, needs all the support he can get to navigate this ordeal. There is no justified reason that Niles hasn't flown into Boston and spent time with his older brother. To make matters worse, Niles and Daphne's son, David, is also on the East Coast, further arguing that he should at least make some time to visit Beantown.

Only time will tell if Niles will ever appear in the Frasier reboot. As Grammer said, he will make sure to incorporate the character into the narrative once Pierce expresses his desire to step back into the shoes of his iconic character. Ideally, it would be great to see the Crane brothers take on Boston in the revival. However, if that isn't really possible, a cameo from Niles would still be better than nothing.

The Frasier reboot is available to stream on Paramount+.
