Entertaining enough, and it’s fun to see Tom Cruise do something that asks him to be a bit more of a person than an action star, but every shot had me going “why it look like that”
Without question the weirdest choice Cruise has made in the 21st century, not just because of Doug Litman’s decision to shoot the film like a Netflix documentary with mediocre re-enactments, shaky cam digital, and bizarre framing in every scene. But more so because it’s the antithesis of Late Cruise’s brand: it’s narratively baggy, he’s mortal and morally compromised, and when it ends you don’t think he’s the most impressive man alive. There’s something amusing about Maverick landing on dirt runways in Central America and hustling the CIA, but why was it shot on an iPhone with the Studio Light filter slid to 100? If this had marked a transition to gruff, exasperated leading roles — like Newman’s Nobody’s Fool and Twilight period — it might have been more coherent with his story. But Cruise was right back to Ethan Hunt after this. I hope he does eventually get to that period.
It's so good that it made me forget that Tom Cruise was even in The Mummy.
Why the fuck was this so good?
Well I thought I'd edit this and tell you. It's interesting to watch. Tom Cruise is actually a lot of fun in this role (yeah, I don't know what year it is either) and Domnhall Gleeson is pretty good too. There's a couple of dumb choices mainly to do with camera work but that doesn't stop it being a fun action romp.
In France this movie is called BARRY SEAL: AMERICAN TRAFFIC, which is a far better title.
I usually don't care about historical accuracy but this embellishes and outright fabricates so much of a true story that's terrifically exciting and contradictory and timely on its own. The real Barry Seal was a key figure in the background of so much of the history of modern narcotraffic, and this just turns that saga into another boring rise and fall that just bluntly dumps its political and socioeconomic threads in a pile at your feet as if that's enough. Not to mention it looks and sounds like shit, its dummy docudrama aesthetic entirely cribbed.
67/100
Not sure whether Cruise allowed himself to be less protected here than usual, but this is the first movie I remember in which he always clearly looks 5'8". Perhaps not coincidentally, he gives his loosest, most relaxed performance in ages, spearheading a counterintuitive Good Time Charlie vibe that in no way foreshadows Seal's real-life fate. Rhythm is correspondingly improvisatory; Liman has editor Andrew Mondshein (a sedate pro most closely associated with Lasse Hallström) essentially do a Stephen Mirrione impression, suggesting what Go might have looked like had its crew of idiots stumbled into the world of geopolitical grifting. Some details get lost in the rush—half an hour in: "Wait, he has three kids?!?"—but it's a brisk, satisfying ride to a comically downbeat destination, with the man who had everything revealed as a mere footnote to Iran-Contra.
After finishing the Mission Impossible marathon with my mother until the arrival of the ostensibly final two installments of the saga, I noticed that this film was available and decided to watch it with her to continue our random and unofficial Tom Cruise run.
Anyway, this video is still as entertaining today as it was over five years ago when I originally saw it, albeit I recall it being considerably less hectic. Liman's use of many cameras and formats is great, hovering on the edge between the real and the surreal to produce an engrossing, documentary-style trip into the life of this seemingly ordinary man who becomes remarkable. Tom Cruise adds a healthy dose of his own personality, which boosts…
The well paced fun vibed narrative and an engaging dynamic performance from Tom Cruise keeps this crime drama in a surprisingly entertaining zone all through, overshadowing it’s weak links. It’s has no real memorable moments, but was a jolly ride indeed.
"I'm the gringo who always delivers." -Barry Seal
Movie based on real events about historical happenings related to the Medellin Cartel.
It’s an interesting piece for those who like and know a lot of history. If you are an average person like me (I don’t know too much about historical events), you can also like the movie and enjoy it.
Recommended one to check this amazing story out (I personally had never heard anything about it, to be honest).
