Bamberg has more than 2400 listed buildings, an abundance of mediaeval churches all of this makes Bamberg a work of art of immense historical value. Because of the impressively well preserved architectural ensemble in the Old Town, Bamberg was awarded the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. These are the words of Bamberg's tourist office to which I totally agree. The Alte Hofhaltung is one of those wonderful buidlings. We did not have the time to explore the inside (I am not sure it is possible) but we loved the outside and the other buildings we had a chance to visit.

Alte Hofhaltung was the original residence serving the need of the Bishop. The place is impressive however the size is also rather huge. For the sake of sightseeing, it is definitely worthwhile to explore it. Unfortunately we had rush through the place due to lack of time. After seeing the whole complex, one will come away with the understanding of the way of life during the Bishop's years.

The outside of the building is incredible in its own. Perfectly medieval and historical. We loved the place I'd highly recommend it if you are going thru the Residence or Dom Cathedral.

There is so much to see in this huge courtyard surrounded by timbered buildings with covered balconies that allowed the bishops and cardinals to enter the Cathedral without being watched by the congregants. Imagine the ancient covered space when five of the city's mayors were displayed after being convicted of witchcraft in the late 1600s, before being burned at the stake.
And spend a while looking down on the ancient centre of Franconia.

We had a hard time to locate this attraction. Thanks to local Germans we eventually found it, right in front of a large parking lot. We could have driven there! Oh well!
I wanted to really see the Alte Hofhaltung. The movie of the 3 Musketeers was filmed here. I could imagine enjoying a medieval experience in this edifice. It was not supposed to be, even though everything was Medieval. They had put bleachers for some play to be performed that very evening. Sadly we had other plans. The modern contraption hindered us to see this building in all its glory.
I eventually found some spots that were fine enough to enjoy. The courtyard though is the main attraction! A pure delight!

After seeing the new residence, seeing the old one was interesting. It is very picturesque with flowerboxes underneath all the windows.

Alte Hofhaltung (Old Court) was built in 15th c. on the same place where Henry's II palace was. A complex of commercial and residentail buildings. After the Prince-Bishop of that time, moved to a new palace the buildings were used as office, library and council chamber. Today Old Court houses the Historical Museum of the city. Walking from the Dom towards the huge courtyard you find first the 11th c. tall building with a Renaissance oriel, then the splendor Portal and finally the old half-timbered buildings with beautiful roofs. A nice break after the Dom's visit and there are also restrooms just in case...

We went here after doing all of the sites in Bamberg on our way out of town. Was up a pretty steap hill so I would recommend driving or they have a trolley/bus of some kind. Spectacular views from the top of this castle now restuarant. Good food and beer to boot!!!!
