Lisa Maffia - First Lady - CD
Amazon.co.uk
First Lady, the title of Lisa Maffia's debut album, probably refers to her position in the So Solid Crew--in a recent documentary on the group she was the one who came over as most clued up. However she's yet to reach Ms Dynamite's status of first lady of UK garage, and this album won't change that. Keeping in step with her garage cohorts (Ms D, Craig David), Maffia's quick to ditch the form that made her famous and opt for R&B, because that's where the real money's to be made (especially in the US). Never mind that neither Ms Dynamite nor Craig David (or any other UK R&B act save the offbeat Floetry) have done well stateside. Still, there are and have been good chart hits on First Lady: both the bouncy "All Over" and "In Love" (with its kind of dated Spanish guitar) have gone into the Top 10.
The album is patchy, swinging from pop, to garage, R&B and even a touch of rock. "Women of the World" is a kind of warm, obviously maternal track (she's a single mother) and "Down" goes for the slinky funk of Missy Elliott and her many imitators. That's not a criticism of the production, which is generally solid, but her producers have had to work hard to give Maffia her own identity. It's only on the last track that she ever recaptures what she had on So Solid's "Oh No (Sentimental Things)" and "21 Seconds". Here, finally, she sounds British, she sounds confident, she sounds herself. --Jake Barnes

The only bad thing about this album is that, at times, it does feel like another So Solid album. Several of Lisa's past bandmates make guest appearances on the album, and its a mixed blessing. But, thankfully, its been kept to a good level and there are enough purely Lisa Maffia tracks on here to make it her own.
When I first listened to this album, it took me a while to really get into it. The So Solid appearances put me off to begin with, but by about Track 5 I was lovin' it! This is one of the best releases of this year. If So Solid Crew's next offering is half as classy as this, then we all have alot to look foward to.
First Lady is not like most albums where there are 3 or 4 good songs but the rest are failures but this is an album with changes of style and sound all way through. You will not get bored !
After the cringe-worthy "Swiss Intro" the album launches itself into Maffia's #2 debut single, "All Over", which is slightly longer than the original edit. Unfortunately, it is here the album reaches its peak. "Women Of The World" could almost be a Destiny's Child throwaway track with its low-slung funk and the usual messages of girl power. "Down" is a poorer relation to Aaliayh's hit-single "Try Again" which rarely ups the pace or seems to go anywhere. The popular sport of bloke-bashing is resumed in track six as Maffia sings about "Wrong Guys". There is a hint of hope with "So Solid Party" which has Maffia spitting out soundbites over a bouncing garage beat, which is like a breath of fresh air amidst the otherwise mid-tempo Yank-placating numbers. The "JD Interlude", much like the "Swiss Intro", is pointless and cringe-worthy and again showcases the producer's love of his own voice whilst saying Maffia's name, after his appearance on Maffia's debut single "All Over". The production of "In Love" is first-class, however, it showcases Maffia's voice to be neither distinctive or strong and its recent peak chart position of #13 goes to show that not only does her voice suit the more uptempo and upbeat songs, but also that Maffia seems rather out-of-place without her Crew beside her and still cannot get away with doing little promotion for any song in order for it to be a big hit. As the album continues, it fails to impress as the First Lady of So Solid continues with her US R&B makeover. "Night Crawler", however, is a wickedly sexy slice of pounding garage action, with the real Maffia emerging from behind the put-on transatlantic-isms.
If you liked Maffia's latest single, then you might like this album a lot. If not, it probably won't be for you. I have given this album 2 stars out of 5 because there are only four decent tracks; "All Over", "In Love", "So Solid Party" & "Night Crawler".
