year." we are live. hello 2009. i'm bill hemmer. megan: hi, everybody. i'm megan kelly. we are thrilled to be here with you tonight and people right behind us and behind our camera. they are everywhere here. they are dropping the biggest ever crystal ball this year. we will bring it to you live! bill: indeed we are. it is way up there. megan: it is gorgeous and it is huge! bill: we also have a great team of reporters. with us, they will bring us some of the great new year's stories from the world over the next 90 minutes. we will be with them throughout the night. security is a big deal. megan: especially this year. police are saying they will have thousands of officers right here in time square and rick is down -- where else, but in the heart of the cloud, in the heart of

time square. hi, rick. >> hey, megan and bill. great to be with you. obviously the mypd taking security very, very seriously. they have more than 4,000 police officers in uniform and plain clothes. they have countersniper teams on rooftops and helicopters with infrared and radiation detection equipment and as you can see, there is a heavy, heavy police presence and in addition this year, like years past all the revelers are being kept on every single block all the way up to central park tool weather may be keeping the crowds down somewhat this year, although they tell me not necessarily a bad thing. >> there is no question about

it. we have seen more actual events and attempted terrorist events in this country in 2009 than any year before that so it is understandable for law enforcement, for government to be concerned and so, your sense of things being ratcheted up, i think is correct. >> new york city is definitely the top of the terror target list. everything possible has been done to keep this city safe. he will be here himself and will feel better when that ball drops. megan: absolutely. he will be here all night as he always is. you may not know this. the new year's party drops back to 2,000 b.c. that is more than 4,000 years. bill: the weather casters nailed it three days ago.

winterry mix at 11:00 p.m. megan: it is sleet and it is snow and it is rain all in one. and look. this is sort of the before hair. stay with us throughout the evening and we'll come back and see the deterioration and do an after picture. bill: the first new year's in time square, the year they invented the neon light. and she was there. >> that's right. i've had a lot of plastic surgery. that's why i look like this after all of these new year's eves. people very excited to be here. including this couple from australia. how excited are you to be in new york city? >> massively excited. >> why did you come all the way from australia to be here? >> just the vibe and the people and there is nothing like this

anywhere else in the world, so yes. >> what are you hoping for 2010? >> just to have a really great fun, exciting year and to do a lot of traveling as well. >> for me, to travel more and write more music. >> you already traveled a long time to be here in new york city for times square. i heard a couple might get engaged. i have my money on these two. they have been together for six years. i'm keeping my eye on these two. megan: no pressure or anything. bill: last year it was -- they are from australia. 55 minutes away we'll see the ball drop here. that's big tonight and see the mirrors fuse cal performance from a guy they call -- musical performance from the guy they call the next frank sinatra.

america? >> working with the military. it has been incredible. life-changing work. some of my most favorite memories are have come from my year as miss america, my time with the military and being here celebrating not just the end of the year, but the end of a decade, it mens new beginnings. megan: there is going to be a million people here tonight. looks like about that. bill: what a decade it has been two too when you think about where we were in 2000. the election recount in florida. katrina. two presidential elections. all the economic upheaval. it is phenomenal. and then all of the technology changes that you have been able to experience. >> yeah, i think back to the year 2000, i think i was in seventh grade.

now i'm 23 years old, out of college. it is just amazing. i was talking earlier this evening, kind of reflecting back on the decade and this is the very first full decade that i truly remember. i remember where i was every year. something significant about each year. 2009 will remain as the highlight of my life. i know this year is coming to an end and so is my term as miss america. megan: is that sad? >> it is. it is a little bittersweet. megan: what do you do? >> i have to figure that out. megan: you mentioned the troops. i know you have been to germany and you were there visiting the wounded in germany after they came back from iraq and afghanistan. what message do you have for people about the men and women you met in germany? >> that our service men and women are the epitome of what america stands for.

they know what it means to serve and putting their lives on the line every single day. our military is not just about our current troops serving in iraq and afghanistan. it is about our veterans and wounded warriors and military families here at home waiting for their loved ones to come home. i encourage everybody to reach out to their military families and just support them whether it is just shaking their hand, buying them dinner, inviting them over for dinner, sending them a thank you note. these are the holidays. they are still overseas fighting for our freedom. we need to reach out to them. megan: it is so festive and wonderful here in time square you can forget that we have men and women serving this country. having been there first-hand -- let me ask you this, does the crown make everything look better? >> sometimes. bill: you have represented our country very well.

to army but to all of our armed forces, the men and women serving, reservists and active duty, from the bottom of our harts, thank you. megan: we're here occupy on the riser in the middle of -- up on the riser in the middle of time square. behind us, down below, we just saw somebody from ray's pizza deliver about 20 pizzas to the people standing in these pens. the fourth pen on the left. you can only imagine how hungry they are. how did that guy from ray's get through security? in any event, here is a little bit of color for you. confetti is going to be released when the ball drops. you know who puts it up there? the very people who have to clean it up. bill: yes, they do. courtney is down there on the streets.

good evening. happy new year. >> happy new year to you guys. yes, seeing the ball drop live in person in time square is definitely something you should do in your lifetime on your bucket list. i tried back in 2002 and we didn't leave the hotel rooms until 11:30. that's why i have admiration for people having the commitment of being here since 2:30 in the nanch. is this something you have waited your whole life to do? >> it is just something on the bucket list, like you say. you have to do it sometime. we came here early to make sure that we can see it. we're loving it. >> i understand you are on the dehydration plan because you couldn't move or go to bathroom. >> we quit drinking after breakfast and haven't had to go to the bathroom so far. >> will you do it again?

>> yes, we'll do it again but preferably without the rain. >> we're seeing people from all over the world. costa rica. sms definitely something to do before you die. >> have to do it once. >> these people line up here and get here around 4:00 p.m. it is all about the five my opinions. bill: right on. we are 40 minutes away from the drop. matt goss started here career as a teenager. he was the star of a british pop band and they sold millions in the u.k. but not in the u.s. megan: he came to the u.s. with a sinatra-style solo act. he is a headliner. here is matt goss singing "feeling good."

megan: did you see how happy they were to see peter? bill: yes, they were. a lot of people start the new year resolving to give back to the world the next year. that is what the new year is about. megan: there is a musician we came across who gives a lot to the troops serving overseas. you may have heard of him. when we heard kid rock was going to afghanistan we asked him why he invests so much time on these trips. >> ♪ >> someone who would place their life in front of yours. i think the guys and girls who are protecting our freedoms, doing what they do, are the best that america has to offer. very near and dear to my heart.

i think it is probably the most important work that i do to express my thanks. i see american flags flying any time i play anywhere around the world there is an american flag behind the stage. it is the greatest nation in the world. a lot of sacrifices have been made for that flag. i would live and die for that flag. i'll do anything that i can to support my country and the rest of the world. bill: that must have been a great night. megan: good for him. absolutely. kid rock is very involved with

>> it is new year's eve. 2009 not the best year. i don't have to tell you guys that, right? but i think you're going to see a rise in the folks getting more power. that's what i see. people getting a little angry and teed off. saying you know what? we're going to take some power back. that is what is going to make 2010 a fascinating new year. a big election coming up in november. could be a change in party structure. republicans certainly could come back, particularly if the economy doesn't get better. i don't want to get too heavy. i want to say thank you to the viewers for making us the number one cable network in the universe. couldn't do it without you and you know that. i want you to have a healthy, happy new year. that's a cliche but i do. i want you to be happy next year. i want to say to the troops, i know you're watching on the

middle of this. it is becoming an iconic thing here. people around the world watching this ball drop. it is becoming the thing to do internationally. bill: you think about what miss america said about the american military families back home. they sacrifice just as much. in 1984 six guys got together in nashville, tennessee. they started a group called diamond rio. 26 years later, they can still stand each other. megan: by the way, miss america wasn't born yet. four years ago they wrote the song "in god we still trust" and they have been getting standing ovations since. here is diamond rio "in god we still trust." >> we're live from the lubbock cafe in nashville, tennessee.

glenn: i wanted a t-shirt that said i survived 2009. i think 2010 is going to be exciting because it is where americans, i think are going to reconnect with who we really are and who we really are are people who can accomplish absolutely anything. we are the people that conquered the mountains and charted a new course and we're the people who had man's first real freedom. the people throughout the world, from everything from the elevator to the light bulb to the motion picture to cotton candy, this is the year to reconnect with our principles and values and say we can accomplish anything. it is why our troops impress me so much. because give them any job and they will do it. happy new year.

where were you 10 years ago? what were you hoping would happen in your life? where were you? bill: i was living in atlanta, georgia. coming off 37 days from florida. megan: the big thing that kicked off this decade, the disputed presidential election and then 9/11 happened. 10 years ago i wasn't even in journalism. i was practicing law living in chicago. how times change. look back on your own life and take stock of where you have been and where you want to be. take stock of the things that haven't gone the way you want them to and the things that have and then just hope things will do better. bill: three minutes away, folks. this is a wonderful scene in new york city. time square. a place we come back to year after year. you meet people from all over the world who -- come here to make a mark in their lives.

up sixth avenue. 42nd avenue, time square. there she is. sitting high atop time square. last year they told us this ball would stay the same forever. guess what? megan: not so much. bill: new york outdid itself. the ball is twice as big as last year. we're getting ready to go. under two minutes now. megan: they have been dropping this ball in a time square tradition for over 100 years. over 100 years of history here. it is new year's central, not just for america but for the whole world. what our all american new year is all about. our troops serving overseas. god bless them and their families and we thank them all. bill: 90 seconds. megan: this is it, bill. bill: 90 seconds.
