Here We Go, BBC One, review: Katherine Parkinson and Alison Steadman are joyous in this warm hug of a sitcom

This new comedy from Tom Basden is nothing groundbreaking, but there's great charm to its characters and their eccentricities

In Here We Go, Katherine Parkinson’s Rachel valiantly tells her husband (and herself): “I cannot accept we’re that useless as a family”. She’s right. The Jessops aren’t completely useless; they’re just ordinary people doing their best to navigate life’s everyday irritations. They first appeared on screens in the 2020 BBC pilot Pandemonium, but now Tom Basden’s family sitcom is back with a new name and a full series, the tagline for which might as well be “We Were Just Trying To Do Something Nice For Once”.

The opening episode sees the Jessops attempting to use an adventure experience voucher before it expires, thwarted by terrible organisation and an accidental dog kidnapping. Alongside Parkinson’s exasperated Rachel is husband Paul (Peep Show’s Jim Howick), a former Olympic archer desperate to relive past glory. Watching Parkinson and Howick together, both class acts of British TV comedy, it seems criminal that this is their first pairing.

Here We Go is a show in which the chaotic energy of the adults completely overshadows the teenage children, in particular a stellar turn by Alison Steadman at her busybodying best as Paul’s mother, Sue. Meanwhile Basden has gifted himself a gem of a character in Rachel’s brother Robin, a cringeworthy Jamiroquai fan (“It’s a way of life”).

Having the sitcom supposedly be a media studies project filmed by son, Sam, feels like a meta-complication it doesn’t need; it is best when keeping things simple and character-focused.

Here We Go isn’t groundbreaking, but there is a pleasing specificity to the Jessop family’s quirks that elevates the observational humour, and the opening episode’s climax – Rachel’s triumphant mini golf hole-in-one – is a genuinely joyous moment in this warm hug of a show.

Here We Go continues on Friday 6 May at 8.30pm on BBC One. The full series is streaming on BBC iPlayer now.
