What We Do
The Real Property Tax Service Agency…
- maintains and updates tax maps for Albany County;
- advises assessors on the preparation and maintenance of assessment rolls;
- serves as a member of the Albany County Agricultural and Farm Land Protection Board; and
- provides administrative support, cooperation and assistance to acting Boards of Assessment Review in Albany County.
Cities, Towns & Villages
As of taxable status date, March 1, 2022, Albany County has 112,627 parcels.
There are three cities, nine towns and six villages in Albany County.

STAR School Property Tax Relief
If you receive your STAR benefit as a reduction on your school tax bill (the STAR exemption), you can choose to register for the STAR credit to receive a check instead. You may receive a greater benefit.
STAR credit savings may increase by as much as 2% each year, but STAR exemption savings will not increase.
- Income limits:
- BASIC STAR exemption: $250,000
- STAR credit: $500,000
- If your income is between $250,000 and $500,000, the program changed in 2019. If eligible, you receive a check for the STAR credit, instead of a reduction on your school tax bill.
- If you have an escrow account, it is extremely important that you reach out to your lending institution. Do not allow your escrow account to fall short by switching to the credit option.

If your income is $250,000 or less, you have the option to switch to the STAR Credit by registering with the NYS Department of Taxation & Finance:
