Liverpool signing Ramsay excellent for Alexander-Arnold - Whelan

Liverpool lauded as breakthrough close in talks to sign Calvin Ramsay – pundit

Noel Whelan has heralded Liverpool for “covering the bases” after a breakthrough in talks to sign Aberdeen defender Calvin Ramsay.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 18-year-old could prove the ideal understudy for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

A recruitment source told Football Insider on Thursday (2 June) that Liverpool are in advanced talks to sign Ramsay after a breakthrough in negotiations.

The source explained the Dons are holding out for a “significant” fee that could rise to over £3million with add-ons.

The teenage right-back has been a first-team regular for Aberdeen since breaking through the youth ranks.

Whelan insisted Liverpool are “doing the right thing” looking for a youngster to help cover Alexander-Arnold.

“I think this is where they’re covering the bases,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“Looking for that another right-back in case Trent can’t go the full season. It’s very difficult to go a full season without any kind of suspension or injury.

“I think they’re doing the right thing and covering bases and doing it very, very quick.

“He’s one for the future as well. He’s not just a two-year contract. This young man will be signing a four to five-year contract, keeping him there and growing that team.”

Ramsay played 33 times across all competitions during the 2021/22 campaign, in what was his first full season as a first-team regular.

Meanwhile, Alexander-Arnold made 47 appearances for Liverpool.

The 23-year-old chipped in with 19 assists and two goals.

Joe Gomez acted as the defender’s understudy throughout the campaign.
