Purchase options and add-ons
The incredible true story of a young and brilliant Princess who grew up to become our Queen Elizabeth, the longest-reigning monarch.
Once, a very long time ago, there was a little Princess called Elizabeth (or Lilibet as her family liked to call her) who loved to play and have fun with her horses, dogs and little sister, Margaret. But when she was ten years old, her life changed forever.
From growing up during the Second World War and training as an army mechanic, to celebrating VE day with the people of Britain and marrying Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh - the man she truly loved - this is the amazing true story of a little girl who became Queen Elizabeth II.
With fantastically fun, charming and playful illustrations by Pauline Reeves, this picture book is the perfect way to explore Queen Elizabeth II's life and legacy with younger readers.

I thought would be nice for her to keep as she’s growing up.
Well illustrated and loveky words too.
Good value.
The book is informative and colourful but I did feel that the text didn't match the pictures and the age group that Amazon tells us the book is written for. There's plenty of information told in a jokey style but much of it will go over the head of,or just not interest, the average 6-8 year-old. For an older child, say 11 or 12,doing a project or research there's plenty there but in that case it's also rather childish for that age group, unlike for example the great Horrible Histories books which hit exactly the right spot for young people of their target age group.
It's not a bad book, with an adult pointing to the pictures while discussing them and telling the Queen's story it will hold the attention of a young child, reading what's written on the page verbatim won't. Older children who want that level of information I suspect would go for a formal history book. A lovely book but a bit confused.

The book measures around 28 cm x 25.5 cm, the eye-catching, thick hardboard cover opening to 32 good quality, shiny finish pages over double page spreads. Colourfully illustrated throughout & interspersed with little snippets, speech bubbles & captions, often humorous, the book closes with a handy, short GLOSSARY.
Informative without being overly so, the text is clear for the best part with keywords CAPITALISED, although some areas might need further explaining, e.g.:
👸 ‘Elizabeth spent some of her pocket money buying PRESENTS from Woolworths ~ a shop that sold everything from sweets and necklaces to pencils and woolly hats.’
(Ah, those were the days!)
~ an ‘American lady called WALLIS SIMPSON'
~ the significance of an outbreak of ‘MUMPS’(!)
The book ends with the 1953 CORONATION, the final paragraph being:
👸 ‘The young princess who grew up to be Queen could never have imagined that she would rule her people for LONGER than any other king or queen in the whole of British history. But that’s just what she’s done.
So, she’s not only a fantastic queen, she’s also a RECORD-BREAKER!’
From the back cover:
👸 ‘The true story of a young princess who grew up to become our Queen.
