About
Situated in the very heart of Vienna's City center, the Albertina houses one of the most important art collections of the world. Founded in 1776, the Museum today owns masterpieces by Da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Duerer, Rembrandt etc. These collections are presented in temporary exhibitions. The Batliner Collection "From Monet to Picasso" is permanentely on display and shows the most important works by artists from the age of modernism. The Habsburg Historic Staterooms of the Albertina give an air of Imperial glamour.

In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the center. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

- TravelleronwheelsUnited Kingdom204 contributionsNot one to missYou are spoiled for choice of museums in Vienna and can’t possibly visit them all in just the one trip but, wherever you do, don’t miss this one. It stands out, not only for quantity but for quality. There are huge collections of Picasso, Monet, Schiller and so many others. There are large galleries spread over 3 floors, mostly displaying but with some other pieces. There is an audio guide available in several languages and German and English notes by each exhibit. One floor is still laid out as a palace and the ticket includes a tour of these apartmentsVisited May 2023Traveled soloWritten May 14, 2023
- JJJC_Family810 contributionsLow expectations turned out unwarrantedI have seen so many art museums in my life that seeing another one on a trip to Europe is not the highest priority. In fact, it’s a pretty low priority. What I read about it did not make me enthusiastic. I only went because it was close to other things we were going to see that day and we could have lunch in the restaurant there. Surprise. Surprise. It was great, fabulous. Not only were their collections on display excellent, but the exhibitions were of a very high quality, particularly the large, diverse Picasso one, which my wife, not a big Picasso fan, found quite good. There was a modern art exhibit by Alex Katz, an artist I had never heard of. Now normally I would rather have root canal than see a modern art exhibition, but we had a little time before they closed and we said what the hell. Good choice. It was good. Very good. His work was interesting and showed creativity, as well as talent. How refreshing. They also had rooms, “State Rooms” still set up as if the palace were operational, which were lovely, better than many other palaces we saw on this trip that were not great museums, as well. The icing on the cake was an expensive, but excellent lunch in nice surroundings with great service. It was so good that we returned a couple of days later for a repeat performance. While not up to the extraordinarily high standards of the first meal, it was still very good. What was originally intended to be at most a two hour stay at the Albertina stretched the entire day and I was completely content. It was one of the best days on a 75 day trip. That says a lot.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 1, 2023
- ClareBeccles, United Kingdom18 contributionsGreat way to spend an afternoonThis art gallery is very good. A huge selection of exhibits, with a real variety of things to look at. As is often the case in Vienna the building itself is just as beautiful as whats inside. Overall a great way to spend an afternoon.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 7, 2023
- Simon CAshtead, United Kingdom782 contributionsEnjoyableWe enjoyed visiting this art museum, located on four floors in the heart of Vienna. It was popular, probably rather too popular, especially the Monet galleries. I found the paintings were too close to each other, but nevertheless interesting, even if they are not his most famous work. The basement is taken over by an single artist – Export. Suffice to say, its an acquired taste.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 14, 2023
- Robert CCanterbury, United Kingdom58 contributionsA stunning galleryDo not be deterred by the seeming grandeur of this building as the exhibitions and presentation of the state rooms is quite spell binding. Many originals of a wide range of artists, in an easily to follow thematic plan. Access was easy, staff very helpful and clearly proud of their Gallery. The only sadness for me was that there was no one book(let) of the Albertina itself. Volumes for individual artists and historical periods, genre etc, but not anything on the gallery itself. However let this not put you off visiting one of the jewels of ViennaVisited August 2023Traveled with friendsWritten August 22, 2023

- Marty BielickiStuart, Florida14,526 contributionsA Few Tips About the Albertina MuseumOur fondest memory of visiting the Albertina Museum was watching a professor teaching his students about Pablo Picasso’s work, “Woman in a Green Hat,” 1947. In the middle of the painting is an “eye.” He pointed out where ever one went, that “eye” would follow you. We focused on seeing the Batliner Collection with works from Monet, Degas and Renoir to name a few artists. The museum is actually famous for its collection of sketches and etchings. We liked the fact that pictures without “flash” are approved. Having a Monet painting on your computer monitor is a superb way to remember the moments. The museum, Albertina, is named after the combination of two individuals: Albert of Saxony and his wife, Maria Christina. At one time it was a residence turned into a palace. Damage from WWII bombings eventually forced a total refurbishment. We found the steps outside going down/up to be painted in various colors. In our case, it was painted in the flag for the LGBTQ community, Picasso and Monet paintings. It does change depending on the season. There are actually two museums. The one we went to was near Burggarten on Albertinaplatz 1. Not far is “Albertina Modern” near “Karlsplatz.” If you found this review “helpful” in any way, please press “Thumbs-up” to let me know.Visited July 2023Traveled soloWritten September 19, 2023

- emnethBremen, Germany76 contributionsTop museum in ViennaReally fantastic art museum, a definite highlight of our Vienna trip! I’ve been to lots of art museums, and this one is up there with the MET in my opinion. Although it’s small, the exhibits are very thoughtfully put together and the artworks themselves are stunning. I really loved how almost every single piece had commentary in German and English, and you could tell someone wrote both in their native languages - there were no translation errors. Also really enjoyed the palace section of the museum and seeing all the rooms put together. Don’t miss the rabbit, it’s hidden back in that section!Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 29, 2023

It has a combination of an extravaganza palace and an art museum, house for important artists. Each room is decorated in different colours and furnitures. The paintings and scalp tires by Michael Angelo, Monet, Picasso and others are remarkable.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 5, 2023

I was so disappointed when I visited this museum. It is expensive to enter and it has some nice works. However I was upset when after paying in I couldn’t enter an entire floor as it was hosting a private function. We should have been told this when purchasing our tickets as one floor is a substantial proportion of this small museum so it was not right that we paid full price without full access. I’ve had much better experiences at other museums such as the MOMA and won’t be returning here.

The queue was organised very poorly. People were standing in the crowd waiting for doors to open, the museum workers didn't even mark lines for standing.
Also, WiFi wasn't working so we couldn't get the smartphone audioguide and in order to learn this we had to stand in a really long queue as well. Turned out that there were
no regular audioguides on the main stand so we just waited for nothing.
The collection though is great, would definitely visit once again. It's also nice that you can buy a ticket online and it's with an open date

I planned this visit to Albertina in advance as I knew Durer exhibition is globally significant. Overall I wasn't disappointed I expected to see more potraits by Durer and I'm not a fan of Durer's Hare and other similar works.
Visiting it was also a challenge because of crowds of people eager to took at the pictures.
I also admire the work of security guards: these are high level professionals.

Their impressionist collection was nothing to right home about. Also, paintings need more space from each other, but I guess it's a special feature of Albertina. Durer exhibit would've been great if it had 5 times the space or if it had 5 times less works. Paintings were right next to each other, as a result there was a wall of people all along the walls, it was impossible to see anything unless you are standing shoulder to shoulder with everyone else. Felt like on a crowded bus during rush hour. This is not an issue of the number of people seeing the exhibit at the same time, it's an issue of space and organisation. Even if I had a private showing, all pieces are right on top of each other, it's hard to appreciate anything.
Very disappointing, I was expecting a lot more from a Vienna museum known all over the world.

I had an excellent visit to Albertina a few years ago. I went again excited to show the great art collection.
We went straight to the 1st floor to see the Van Gogh and Cezanne section. We were turned away as they were hosting an event for season ticket holders / donors later that day. They could have easily informed us of that as we were buying our tickets - and we would’ve chosen to come the next day instead.
Though there was plenty of good art on the other floors - we were disappointed not to see a big section of the impressionist paintings.

The Albertina hosts a great collection of paintings by some amazing artists. The building itself is also beautiful to walk around, with some great sculptures and history of its own.
Depending on the exhibitions, you can easily lose yourself here for 2-3 hours if you're interested in everything. The current exhibitions (March 20) are all worth a visit (in my humble opinion).
The food is also pretty good at the cafe. They serve Sushi, and it was genuinely very good - if a little pricey. If you just want coffee and a cake though, then it's also good for that.

Vienna has no shortage of art galleries and museums. This one, in a converted palace in the city centre, is probably the best. Over several floors, the museum covers many types of art, but is especially strong in 20th century art. There is Chagall, Klimt and lots of modernist and late 20th century works. Additionally, there are some preserved period rooms with stunning furniture, wallpaper and fabrics. It's not cheap to enter, but this is a world class museum in a city of sublime art, so fully recommended.

Beautiful building, beautiful pieces of modern art. Is not a must place to visit -I don't understand much about arts- but still recommend. Not a cheap entrance, disabled friendly, acoustics is a problem being a old building with high ceilings, lockers with coins refundable. Not sure about senior or children discount.

Nice gallery with some interesting art. Also good to be able to see some of the old state rooms of the Albertina Palace. Some of the exhibitions were very busy but otherwise it was easy to get around and to see all the art up close. Recommended.

This museum is a historic building but new structure was added to the building which gives it quite a striking contemporary feel compared to the palace nearby. Even if you don’t want to go inside, I’d suggest that you go to see the building.
The museum houses some of Money’s most famous paintings along with paintings by other impressionists . Think it’s worth visiting just to see Monet’s paintings. Also, compared to other museums in Paris this one is not so crowded so you can take your time and not be pushed away by the crowds

Hi- My mom and I will be visiting Vienna in mid-March, and the two possible times we have for visiting the Albertina are Friday evening (around 6:30 pm) or Monday morning (around 10:30 am). In either case we hope to spend about two hours in order to see the permanent collection, the special exhibition of the Liechtenstein collections, and the state rooms. Does anyone have an idea about which of the two times would be better in terms of smaller crowds? Or do you think that in March it shouldn't be too crowded at either time? Many thanks!

How much is the coat/bag check?
UGM_BRNO

Hi, in Albertina is used to give 1 EURO per person to leave both your bags and coats in the cloakroom. If you are lucky which means you have only a small bag and a coat that would survive to be placed in the box - and if there are vacant boxex too - then place your things into one of the many boxes using either one or two EURO coins. Good luck.
