Second son of George V, he was educated at Dartmouth Naval College, and at Trinity College in Cambridge. On the abdication of his elder brother, Edward VIII, he ascended the throne in 1936. During World War II he continued to reside in bomb-damaged Buckingham palace, visited all theaters of war, and delivered many broadcasts, for which he mastered a speech impediment.
