Seal of Civic Engagement Program

All Las Virgenes Unified School District (LVUSD) schools will provide opportunities for students to participate in service and leadership via the State Seal of Civic Engagement program. This is a voluntary program in which students can choose to participate. In order to meet the LVUSD criteria for the State Seal of Civic Engagement, students must complete the following components by the end of their senior year. 

To obtain the State Seal of Civic Engagement, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be engaged in academic work in a productive way

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the California Constitution through the completion of U.S. History and U.S. Government and Economics.

  • Complete one of the two options below: 

    • Option 1: Develop, propose, and complete a Civic Engagement Project that meets the following criteria:

      • A project proposal is submitted to the Civic Engagement Advisor that speaks to the school/community area of need/growth that is to be addressed. The student will outline the outcomes, scope, and timeline of the work. 

      • Once approved, the Civic Engagement Advisor will coach the student on the timelines and implementation challenges of their project. The project proposal must be submitted by the end of first semester junior year and the hours must be completed by the end of first semester senior year. 

      • At the conclusion of the project, the student will present their findings, growth, and outcomes via a written reflection and formal presentation. Criteria for the formal presentation will be provided by the Civic Engagement Advisor. 

      • The service project should involve a minimum of sixty hours of documented work. 

    • Option 2: Propose and complete student tutoring to support the growth and interdependence of students in our schools. 

      • A project proposal is submitted to the Civic Engagement Advisor that speaks to the school/community area of need/growth that is to be addressed. The student will outline the outcomes, scope, and timeline of the work. 

      • Once approved, the Civic Engagement Advisor will coach the student on the timelines and implementation challenges of their project. The project proposal must be submitted by the end of first semester junior year and the hours must be completed by the end of first semester senior year. 

      • At the conclusion of the project, the student will present their findings, growth, and outcomes via a written reflection and formal presentation. Criteria for the formal presentation will be provided by the Civic Engagement Advisor. 

      • The service project should involve a minimum of sixty hours of documented tutoring.

As this program is implemented, the following adjustments to the required hours will be in place for the class of 2023:

Class of 2023:

  • Must complete one of the following:  

    • An approved Civic Engagement Project of 20 hours prior to graduation. 

    • A minimum of 20 hours of tutoring. 

  • At the conclusion of either option, the student will present their findings, growth, and outcomes via a written reflection and formal presentation. Criteria for the formal presentation will be provided by the Civic Engagement Advisor.

Senior Transfer students’ hours will be as follows:  

  • Must complete one of the following: 

    • An approved Civic Engagement Project of 20 hours prior to graduation. 

    • A minimum of 20 hours of tutoring. 

  • At the conclusion of either option, the student will present their findings, growth, and outcomes via a written reflection and formal presentation. Criteria for the formal presentation will be provided by the Civic Engagement Advisor. 

  • For students who began a SSCE project at another California High School, consideration will be given to the work in progress.
