Tutto iniziò con l'omicidio della fidanzata del Dottor David Keel. Ad affiancare il medico nelle indagini fu il misterioso John Steed che si rivelerà essere un agente segreto al servizio di Sua Maestà. Da allora Steed ha affrontato centinaia di agenti nemici, scienziati pazzi e malvagi di ogni tipo, sempre accompagnato e abilmente sostenuto da splendide colleghe che nel corso degli anni si sono avvicendate. La prima fu Cathy Gale, un'antropologa dal coraggio pari solo alla sua sensualità. Poi venne l'indimenticabile Emma Peel, una giornalista intelligente, scaltra, emancipata, nella quale ogni donna dell'epoca proiettava il proprio sogno di uguaglianza. L'ultima fu Tara King, una giovane recluta dei servizi segreti che John Steed, da perfetto gentleman, prese sotto la sua ala protettrice, per scoprire ben presto che la ragazza era in grado di cavarsela anche nelle situazioni più intricate o pericolose.
ELENCO
Gli episodi sono elencati nell'ordine della loro prima trasmissione in Gran Bretagna. Trattandosi di avventure separate e distinte, le varie puntate della serie possono essere seguite in qualsiasi ordine. E' però consigliabile non mescolare le stagioni che presentano fra loro molte differenze, prima fra tutte i diversi partner di Steed. L'episodio n.129, che mostra il passaggio di consegne fra Emma Peel e Tara King, andrebbe visto prima delle altre avventure della sesta stagione. Non esiste un vero e proprio episodio conclusivo, ma in "Prato felice" (n.161) Steed e Tara partono per un viaggio da cui sarà difficile ritornare.
