When Julia and Trey seek pre-marital counseling on the Extended Family Season 1 finale, they ask someone who seems pretty surprising. Or, well,  maybe not that surprising, all things considered.

On Extended Family Season 1 Episode 13, “The Consequences of Considering The Consequences,” Julia and Trey decide to ask Jim, Julia’s ex-husband.

Despite their unique arrangement, where Jim and Julia take turns staying in the family home after their amicable divorce, they think Jim is the most knowledgeable person for the job.

Or, perhaps that’s because of their unique arrangement. 

In the clip below, we see Julia and Trey start to ask for his help. We also get a hint of how things might go.

NBC’s Extended Family stars Jon Cryer as Jim, Donald Faison as Trey, Abigail Spencer as Julia, Sofia Capanna as Grace, and Finn Sweeney as Jimmy Jr.

Creator Mike O’Malley serves as showrunner and executive producer. Tom Werner, Jon Cryer, Wyc Grousbeck, Emilia Fazzalari, George Geyer, Victor Levin, Victoria Morrow, and James Widdoes also executive produce.

The real-life family dynamic of executive producers Grousbeck, Fazzalari, and Geyer inspired the series. Read our interview with Mike O’Malley to learn more about the inspiration for the comedy series and hopes for a second season.
