Mariners play-by-play announcer Aaron Goldsmith is staying in Seattle.

Two M’s who MLB Network’s Morosi says could make big jumps

After Goldsmith’s name was in the news in the past few days with him tied to a vacancy in the booth for the St. Louis Cardinals, the 10-year veteran of Seattle Sports and ROOT Sports Northwest broadcasts confirmed with a heartfelt tweet to Mariners fans on Monday night that he isn’t going anywhere.

Goldsmith seemed to be a logical choice to be the new voice of the Cardinals as a native of the St. Louis area, but an article Monday afternoon by the St. Louis Dispatch reported that Goldsmith had taken his name out of consideration for his hometown ballclub.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported Saturday that Goldsmith was one of two finalists for Bally Sports Midwest and the Cardinals to replace previous play-by-play announcer Dan McLaughlin. Per that article, Bally Sports and the Cardinals announced on Dec. 15 that McLaughlin would not return to his post following a Dec. 5 arrest for driving while intoxicated, his third such arrest.

Chip Caray, himself a former M’s broadcaster who has called games for the Atlanta Braves since 2005, was reported in Monday’s St. Louis Dispatch article to be the front-runner for the job in St. Louis, where his grandfather, Harry Caray, was a legendary broadcaster. The Athletic reported shortly after that Caray had agreed to fill the position.

Goldsmith, 39, has become a fan favorite in Seattle since joining the Mariners in 2013. He began his time as the radio partner of Rick Rizzs, the longtime voice of the Mariners on Seattle Sports 710 AM and the Mariners Radio Network, and has since gone on to split his time between the radio and TV broadcasts on ROOT Sports Northwest.

The Mariners’ broadcast team also includes play-by-play announcer Dave Sims, color commentator Mike Blowers, radio play-by-play announcer and producer/engineer Gary Hill Jr., and Shannon Drayer, Mariners insider for Seattle Sports and host of radio pregame and postgame shows.

M’s pitchers and catchers report to spring training on Feb. 15, with Cactus League play set to begin on Feb. 24. Coverage of every game from spring training through the postseason will be carried on Seattle Sports 710 AM.
