After falling off the roof at a New Year's Eve house party, Owen decides that it's time to make some wholesale changes in his life. Over the next year, he quits drinking, re-enters his estranged son's life, reignites old friendships, and falls in love with Vera, a bank teller and fellow divorcee...all in an attempt to replace members of his family who he'd lost prematurely.

decided to watch this because it's set on new years' eve (aka tomorrow) and im kind of on a bryan greenberg streak rn but this really wasn't the feel-good watch i was hoping for
This was movie is decent, but it could've been better. My main issue is that it set up a lot of characters, all with different stories connected to the main character, but then it doesn't give each one the time it seemingly deserved. Plus, the movie spans an entire year and it makes large jumps in time all while giving you very small context as to how the characters situations have changed in those time jumps. He's just getting to know this girl, then it jumps a few months and they're seemingly dating, then it jumps again and she's with another guy, but they're still dating. Through all this, I'm wondering when did they even officially start dating anyways because…
A Year and Change is a stunning debut from Stephen Suettinger. It builds you up in a bubble of comfort and warmth and then hits you hard when you least expect it.
This was an interesting one: while the plot is a pretty simplistic "Slice of Life" drama, it's also quite compelling. And the performances (especially from Bryan Greenberg in the lead role) help to give this film the gravity and grounding it needs.
BUT, where this films stumbles is that it feels like they start to set up a rich tapestry of characters, with engaging performers, but none of them are allowed to explore that potential fully. (Though Owen [Greenberg] is the primary force for the film, I'd almost classify this as more of an ensemble film...)
But definitely still worth a watch. :)
A Year and Change tells the story of Owen, a man whose life has taken a wrong turn due to bad life decisions and too much drinking.
Owen's a divorcee with an 11-year-old son, with no real concept of fulfilling his obligations. However, when he drunkenly falls off the roof at a New Year’s Eve party and breaks his arm, the beginning of his “change” begins. The process of Owen’s transformation is spread throughout the nxt year.
He quits drinking, meets a banker named Vera who he falls in love with, & becomes a better dad to his son.
This film covered some real life situations/issues, and told it with a positive message
Nothing too special and if you read the plot you’re pretty much all caught up but still a good watch.
There were a bunch of subplots connected to the main character which I liked because it made him feel more real, like a person with shit going on and not just a one dimensional character.
(((has some pretty dark content tho so would recommend reading trigger warnings)))
not me thinking that jen was owen’s ex wife for the entirety of the film and then being confused why he was calling her cindy…
also, i love bryan greenberg <333
