For many Appalachian Trail (AT) hikers who watched the movie, A Walk in the Woods, part of the fun was trying to identify filming locations they might have seen along the way.
Few of us knew the church in an early scene is Saint Bridget Catholic Church in Sharon, Connecticut.
Almost everyone, however, knew that the initial steps onto the Appalachian Trail by stars Robert Redford and Nick Nolte were taken at the Trail portal in Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia.

The "approach trail" leads out-of-shape hikers up hundreds and hundreds of stairs on an 8-1/2 mile trek that is pure torture -- not a walk in the woods.
Survivors make it to Springer Mountain, the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.
The signs in the movie were changed to reflect what they looked like years ago when author Bill Bryson began collecting stories for his iconic book.

Some caught a glimpse of our pal, Georganna Seamon, at Mountain Crossings at Neel Gap, down the hill from Blood Mountain in Georgia.
Mountain Crossings is famous for their backpack and gear shakedowns that eliminate tons of excess weight and unnecessary stuff from packs. Alas, Neel Gap is as far as many hikers get on their way to Maine ... before they call for a ride home.
Fontana Dam in North Carolina, not far from the Tennessee border, was a filming location that's easy to pick out.

The dam is pretty cool, but so is the Fontana Hilton. That's the name given to one of the fanciest shelters on the Trail. It's big but cozy and it's not far from real showers and actual toilets.

Probably the most beautiful filming location for A Walk in the Woods was McAfee Knob, a magnificent outcropping that faces an uncertain future because of its popularity.
More must be done to preserve this point.
One of the film's promotional photographs was comical because of its absurd imposition of Redford and Nolte on McAfee Knob that made them look like giants.
