The July 29 episode of American Horror Stories season 1, episode 4, titled “The Naughty List,” is rough to watch. The biggest crime in the cringe-packed episode is wasting the talents of Danny Trejo.

Listen, I was excited about American Horror Stories on FX on Hulu as much as the next AHS fan. In fact, I was particularly looking forward to episode 4, “The Naughty List,” because of two reasons: a Christmas horror episode is perfect for Christmas in July, and also for Danny Trejo.

Even when Trejo is playing a good guy, the actor comes off as very intimidating. He’s a big scary teddy bear, but can also be the most frightening villain in the room if he wants to be, and we love this about him. That said, I thought the AHS was a perfect fit for Trejo and couldn’t wait to see him take over American Horror Stories.

Well, what a disappointment “The Naughty List” was.

Audiences didn’t learn much at all about the character or even see him well. He was always too far or too close up, and hidden under an evil Santa look. Instead, we focused on four man-children who film over-the-top pranks for views and likes. Do we need more of this? No. We’ve already established this is bad and we’re over it.

I would rather watch a miniseries all about evil Santa, played by Danny Trejo, than this episode of American Horror Stories or any of the three episodes before it. That’s how much I disliked the episode and feel it could have done so much more if they had focused on their villain.

Will I give up on American Horror Stories? Not at all. I plan on watching episode 5 and all episodes after it. But let’s just say it’s not my favorite horror series. So far, American Horror Stories is not meeting my expectations.

However, I do enjoy having a connection to the AHS universe while I wait for American Horror Story: Double Feature to premiere.

Have you been enjoying Stories or are you just watching to kill time until season 10 of the original series premieres?
