78/52 is an informative look at Psycho and its influence in film. The interviewees are an eclectic mix, I may have squealed a little bit when Illeana Douglas turned up, it’s a truly impressive group in this, and the themes they talk about are interesting and illuminating.
For film lovers I would say this is an essential watch.

There were a ton of things I hadn't thought of before, including the fight scene in Raging Bull was staged like the shower scene in Psycho.
Really, you have people from Peter Bogdanovitch to Elijah Wood talking about the scene as well as the editor from the Psycho remake.
Overall, a great film for anyone remotely interested in Hitchcock or Psycho.

This is a documentary about the film Psycho, with special emphasis on the iconic shower scene and all of the work that went into its creation. An all star cast of directors, editors, actors and critics give their insight and interpretations of the film. There are a lot of great edits of repeating patterns in the film.
I honestly don't know if this is a good depth of information because I didn't know a ton about the film Pscyho. I feel like a learned a lot but also really enjoyed hearing what a number of people in the industry think about Psycho.
Artistically, the film is a pretty standard talking head style documentary. Also, 78/52 is all in black and white which I kind of find lame. This is a recommend for people interested in Psycho, Hitchcock, or general film analysis.
Psycho is one of those films that seems to be revered in equal measure by horror and non-horror fans. That might be due to Hitchcock's own popularity. This idea is alluded to in the documentary, that a movie of this kind in 1966 may not have been so well received had Hitchcock not been at the helm. After all there are other excellent horror films of similar stature that don't enjoy such a wide revererance. Peeping Tom is one such example.

How many scenes in movies could support an entire documentary? I maintain the shower sequence in Psycho is the most famous scene in film, and so the answer might be one. If you truly care about cinematic history, it is crucial to get the deepest breakdown of the scene.
The interviews (Guillermo del Toro, Danny Elfman, Mick Garris and more) are sublime. The dissection of Bernard Herrmann's score is instructive. And the exploration of the influence on further movies is paramount to understanding why the shower scene is so important. This is an important documentary.

A.V. Club review. I guess it was naïve of me to imagine that this would be a feature-length shot-by-shot analysis. But I was really unprepared for all the random talking heads. Illeana Douglas?! Love her, but why?
