Franklin Roberts, who has promised his wife that he will retire as a public defender, takes on Johnson's case because he recognizes its potential to upend the entire Chicago judicial system, challenging the institutional racism and endemic corruption at its heart. The series was informed by deep research into the city's history, as well as the personal experiences of executive producer-writer J. David Shanks, who grew up as a young Black man on the South Side and later became a Chicago police officer before entering the world of film and TV. Critics Consensus

61st Street is situated smack dab in a clichéd zip code of television drama, but terrific performances by Courtney B. Vance and a strong supporting cast provide some local attraction.

Naomi C One of the best tv series I have watched! 10/10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/15/23 Full Review Helena M I had to create an account after watching this series because the writing and acting was very engaging, relatable and informing and the past reviews just don't provide this series justice. The intersecting back stories and ending really set up a "wanting to know more" feeling for the next season. I hope they continue to follow up with the small details from this first season into the next to tie everything together. I look forward to seeing more! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/27/22 Full Review Audience Member A compelling, topical story, and fine acting performances make this worth watching, despite some subplots either being weak, trite, or left lazily and/or unsatisfactorily unexplored. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review STEVEN W TOUGH ISSUES. EXCELLENT ACTING. FEEL GOOD ENDING. HAS POTENTIAL FOR 2023. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/22 Full Review Audience Member The actors and storyline are amazing. The plot is complex and tells a old adage of "don't judge a book by its cover". Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review The Truth W 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥Real Life series! Hope it goes to have 100 seasons!! Terrific cast and Power message in every episode! Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times 61st Street takes on Chicago’s polarizing issues with gravity and authenticity. Rated: 3/4 Apr 11, 2022 Full Review Judy Berman TIME Magazine Certainly, its themes remain relevant. But its mix of generic hand-wringing over injustice and coincidence-heavy thought-experiment plotting has been done too many times to make much of an impact. Apr 11, 2022 Full Review Michael Phillips Chicago Tribune The intersecting storylines hold enough interest to pull you through the odd cliche and the occasional thesis line. And Vance, as a modest soul trying to outrun any number of clocks, really is a marvel. Rated: 3/4 Apr 11, 2022 Full Review Monique Jones Common Sense Media A tragic series that focuses on police brutality and corruption. Rated: 4/5 Jun 10, 2022 Full Review Phylecia Miller The Young Folks Along with the terrible story, the actors waste their talents on 61st Street, especially Vance. Rated: 3/10 Apr 25, 2022 Full Review Glenn Garvin Reason Online In quieter moments, it achieves -- if that's the right word -- a desolate sense of hopelessness as the cops and courts chew up the guilty and the innocent alike. And it manages to summon up a truly ferocious rage about the drug war. Apr 22, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
