A Guide to Second Language Acquisition

Second language acquisition is a process where people learn a new language after they have already learned another language. It usually refers to the process of learning a language after the age of 12, though some people learn a second language as early as age 6.

The process of second language acquisition is different for everyone. Some people learn languages quickly, while others take longer. There are many factors that influence how quickly a person learns a second language, including their prior experience with languages, the language being learned, and the teaching method used.

There are four main stages of second language acquisition: pre-learning, learning, mastery, and transition.

Pre-learning is the stage where a person is trying to understand the rules of the new language. They are also trying to understand what the language is like.

Learning is the stage where a person learns the rules of a new language. They are also trying to understand what the language is like in context.

Mastery is the stage where a person has learned all the rules of the new language and can use it in context.

Transition is the stage where a person is using the new language in different contexts.
