2 HUDDERSFIELD DAILY EXAMINER MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2021 News No horsing around with cars riders take to roads to highlight safety campaign for animals By phoeBe fuller Around 10 horse riders took to the streets in Marsden today for the ‘Pass Wide and Slow’ ride. The ride was organised as part of the nationwide Pass Wide and Slow campaign, which encourages motorists to be patient when coming into contact with horses on the roads. national advice for motorists is to slow right down to 15mph when approaching a horse on the road, ensuring that you only pass if it is safe to do so and you can give at least two metres clearance of the animal. Motorists should not exceed 15mph while passing a horse on the road, hence the campaign name ‘Pass Wide and Slow’. The campaign has been supported by police forces across the country, alongside the British Horse Society (BHS) who have their own ‘dead Slow’ campaign, which highlights the devastating impact that speeding around horses can have. As part of their campaign, the BHS have collated heartbreaking information about ‘road incidents’ involving horses and their riders in the last year. Their data shows that, in the last year alone, there have been 1,010 road incidents which have left 46 horses dead, 118 injured and 130 people injured. Their data also shows that 80 percent of these incidents were caused due to a vehicle passing a horse too closely and 43 per cent were caused due to a vehicle passing too quickly. Ash dee, who organised this morning’s ride from Marsden, said: “It was an ace morning, most drivers were patient and we had one or two be bargy. “our aim is to make drivers aware of horses and livestock in the area. “It is also country code to pass wide and slow but not a lot of drivers actually know the country code, a two-minute wait can save lives.” Riders take part in a Pass Wide and Slow demonstration Examiner The Huddersfield Daily Weather Around the Country Today’s Weather Established Four-Day 1851 Outlook Office 6, Photon House, Percy Monday Tuesday Street, Leeds, LS12 1EG °C °F °C °F Skies will be sunny to partly cloudy today. 4 HUDDERSFIELD DAILY EXAMINER MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2021 Police at Blacker Road as daylight broke after a young man was shot in the shoulder News last week. Inset: MP Barry Sheerman ENOUGH IS ENOUGH mp and residents demand action at ‘out-of-control’ suburb after shooting By robert sutcliffe robert.sutcliffe@trinitymirror.com @MrRSutcliffe Residents and an MP are demanding action in an ‘out-of-control’ Yorkshire suburb after its latest shooting. Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman has demanded a new approach to policing in the Birkby area following the latest shooting incident, saying ‘enough is enough’. On Tuesday a 28-year-old man was taken to hospital after being shot in the shoulder outside a sweet store in Blacker Road, only the latest violent incident in a shocking litany of mayhem in recent years, with some residents now jokingly referring to the village as ‘Shootby’. And the veteran MP is not the only one demanding action – one female resident aged 30 who has lived on nearby Sufton Street for 10 years, said the situation had once again shown signs of becoming out of control. She said young people under the age of 25 were finding it almost impossible to get car insurance as soon as they mentioned their postcode. In perhaps the most notorious incident which garnered huge national publicity a masked man was pictured shooting a defenceless man at point-blank range outside his home on Arnold Street in June 2018. Mr Sheerman said: “I think enough is enough and I shall be raising this issue with Tracy Brabin, the Mayor of West Yorkshire who has responsibility for police matters and Huddersfield’s Chief Supt Julie Sykes. “I think it’s time for a new initiative and a fresh look at what is happening in Birkby and what we can do about drugs, gangs, money laundering and violence. “I do think we need a more focused and integrated approach to combat this sort of lawlessness.” The Sufton Street resident said: “There are normal, professional people who live on these streets, teachers, nurses – and we are getting a raw deal. “Part of the problem is that houses have been sold to people who are renting them out and we are getting all sorts of undesirables dumped in these streets. “There doesn’t seem to be any kind of vetting procedures. “I worry about getting caught in the crossfire TV star’s breast cancer op Julia Bradbury is set to undergo surgery to remove her left breast after revealing she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. In an interview with the Mail on Sunday, the 51-year-old broadcaster, pictured, said she would have a mastectomy next month in order to remove a six-centimetre tumour. Surgeons will also take tissue from her lymph nodes to when these shooting incidents start. We have had petitions in the past but nothing gets done.” And a restaurant owner said: “Yes, it has been bad for several years now. “I’ve lost count of the number of times Blacker Road has been taped off by police to deal with serious incidents but it just seems the authorities are prepared to countenance it.” The problems in the Birkby area have been well documented in recent years. The award-winning journalist, Mobeen Azhar, who was born and raised in the village, made a compelling documentary about Huddersfield in 2019. He memorably said he had seen more blue and white police tape in Huddersfield than during his time in London. establish whether the disease has spread to other parts of her body. Bradbury’s diagnosis followed a mammogram she booked in July on an annual recall, having last year found a lump which proved to be a cluster of benign micro-cysts. While the tumour was described as “sizeable”, doctors believe the cancer cells have not yet spread to the breast tissue, meaning she may not need chemotherapy. Bradbury told the paper she was sticking to the positives: “It is quite good on the scale on cancers. But as with all tumours, until you are in there you never know. “As it is I am going to lose my breast. I trust that one day I will look down on it and think that was the fight of my life and I have the ultimate battle scar to prove it.” The Countryfile presenter urged other women to regularly check themselves for breast cancer and not to be afraid to seek help.

6 HUDDERSFIELD DAILY EXAMINER MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2021 News ‘Hanging must run in the blood, it requires a natural flair’ the life of britain’s notorious hangman albert pierrepoint By andrew roBinson andrew.robinson@trinitymirror.com @AndrewRobinson The broad smile and delighted expression suggest a man happy in his work. Yet Albert Pierrepoint wasn’t just any old publican running a northern boozer – he was also the most prolific and famous hangman in British history. In a career spanning 25 years, it’s estimated Albert Pierrepoint was involved in the executions of between 435 and 600 people, among them Nazi war criminals. Albert, who was born in Clayton, near Bradford, and later lived in huddersfield, travelled all over the country in his part-time post as official executioner. he saw his role as something of a calling, having wanted to be a hangman from an early age. Indeed, when asked at school what he wanted to be when he grew up, he wrote: “When I leave school I should like to be public executioner like my dad is, because it needs a steady man with good hands like my dad and my Uncle Tom and I shall be the same.” The young Albert had grown up reading his uncle Tom’s diaries of the job, while his dad had recommended it as a sideline with opportunities for continental travel. “hanging must run in the blood,” Albert Pierrepoint said after his retirement. “It requires a natural flair. “The judgment and timing of a first-rate hangman cannot be acquired.” Unlike his father and uncle before him, Pierrepoint’s professionalism at the trapdoor was never questioned. he prided himself on delivering as quick, dignified and as humane a death as possible, paying meticulous attention to the height, weight and build of the monday £1,000 BA4 5QB BB1 5QT BB12 8HN BB18 6NA BN21 1XF BN27 4DA CF38 1UJ CF72 8JE CT7 0NR CT11 7DU for every ticket in these winning postcodes CV47 0LB DG3 4HH EX1 3SB LL30 1PS PL1 3EZ SA4 3XB TA11 7BQ TR4 8BQ WA4 4QG WA4 3LH condemned, to ensure the fatal drop was as efficient and as painless as possible. Albert’s father, henry, and uncle were official hangmen before him and it was with his Uncle Tom that he carried out his first execution as an assistant executioner in 1932 when he was 27. Albert’s first job as an assistant executioner was the hanging of a young Irish farmer, who had murdered his brother. Uncle Tom took Albert with him to Mountjoy prison in Dublin for the hanging. As an assistant executioner, Albert’s job would be to follow the prisoner onto the scaffold, bind the prisoner’s legs together, then step back off the trapdoor before the lead executioner sprung the mechanism. And this is what he did for the remainder of the 1930s, alongside continuing his work in the grocery business, until 1941 when he became a lead executioner. his first hanging as lead executioner was in 1941. Between 1932 and 1956, at least 433 men and 17 women died at the end of his rope. his personal record included 17 hangings in one day – of which he said, ‘was my arm stiff!’ Diminutive, always immaculatelydressed and with a penchant for cigars, boxing and coin tricks, Pierrepoint became a publican in 1946. he quit working for a grocer to become licensee of the help The Poor Struggler alehouse at 303 Manchester Road, Oldham. Described by regulars at the time as a cheerful character, his humble pub was soon subject to visits from coaches full of sightseeing tourists. By then Albert was something of a celebrity for being the third member of his family to hold the macabre position of Britain’s chief executioner. In the years following the end of the Second World War, Albert became widely seen as a populist avenger of Nazi crimes after it was revealed he visited Germany to execute Described by regulars as a cheerful character, his pub was subject to visits from coaches full of tourists 200 war criminals found guilty at Nuremberg. Among his ‘clients’ then was Josef Kramer ‘The Beast of Belsen’ – hanging women individually and men in pairs. Another port of call was Gibraltar, where he executed spies, and Albert even carried out the last-ever execution in the Republic of Ireland, taking Michael Manning’s life in 1954. Visitors to his Oldham pub hoping for anecdotes and stories were to be disappointed, however, by a painfully discrete man who didn’t even tell his wife, Anne, about his part-time job until after they were married. In all, between 1932 and 1956, Albert’s part-time position saw him end the lives of an estimated 433 men and 17 women. Those who met their ends in his noose included necrophiliac halifax-born multiplemurderer John Christie, and the acid bath murderer John George haigh, who grew up in Outwood, Wakefield. Albert was also involved in controversial cases such as that of Ruth ellis, the last woman hanged in Britain, and Derek Bentley, executed for his part in the murder of Pc Sidney Miles despite having a mental age of 11, just as the public mood turned against capital punishment in the 1950s. According to a film about his life, it was one remarkably personal case that may have changed the mind of the hangman himself. On November 28, 1950, Albert visited Strangeways prison, Manchester, to carry out the grim task of hanging James Corbitt. The man had murdered his girlfriend in a fit of jealous rage, strangling her and daubing the word ‘whore’ across her forehead in indelible ink. It was just another crime and just another name to Pierrepoint until – looking through the observation window beforehand – he was stunned to recognise Corbitt as a regular and friend from his Struggler’s pub. The two men, who affectionately nicknamed each other Tish and Tosh, had even sung their regular Saturday night duet of ‘Danny Boy’ in the pub on the night of the murder. Pierrepoint proceeded with the execution but is thought to have been haunted by the experience. Most shocking of all to him was the realisation that a man so personally aware of the punishment and the hangman himself had not found the death penalty to be a deterrent. Throughout Albert’s career, he had prided himself on meticulously observing the fam-

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2021 HUDDERSFIELD DAILY EXAMINER 7 News New boost in ovarian cancer treatment Almost half of patients with an advanced form of ovarian cancer saw their tumours shrink when given a new combination treatment, according to the results of a small clinical trial. Researchers said they are “delighted” with the outcome, and hope it could mean a “significant advance” in treatment if the results are replicated in larger trials. The phase one trial, led by a team at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, tested the drugs VS-6766 and defactinib in patients with low-grade serous ovarian cancer. This type of cancer is an uncommon form and tends to develop at a younger age, the ICR said, adding that less than 13% of patients respond to chemotherapy and under 14% respond to hormone therapy. Trial results, presented at the 2021 European Society for Medical Oncology Congress, show that of the 24 patients evaluated, 46% saw their tumours shrink significantly in response to the treatment. But with his conscience now deeply troubled, he spurned begging letters from the government and resigned in 1956 citing a row with the Home Office over fees. He had been paid £4 instead of the usual £15 when a client received a late reprieve. Within eight years the death penalty was abolished in the UK and Albert’s subsequent autobiography ‘Executioner: Pierrepoint’, revealed his conversion in 1974. He wrote: “I have come to the conclusion that executions solve nothing, and are only an antiquated relic of a primitive desire for revenge which takes the easy way and hands over responsibility for revenge to other people. “The trouble with the death penalty has always been that nobody wanted it for everybody but everybody differed about who should get off.” Albert left the Struggler’s in 1954 and the pub served its final pint 18 years later before demolition under a roadwidening scheme in the 1990s. The fire closed two lanes of the motorway eastbound between J22 and J23, with nine miles of traffic causing 50 minute delays at one point. Photos show the aftermath of the fire, with the car – that was towing the caravan – completely burnt out and the caravan also suffering severe damage. As of 1.05pm, traffic management platform, Inrix, had the following: “M62 – West Yorkshire – eastbound. “One lane closed, long delays and queueing traffic due to earlier car towing a caravan fire on M62 Eastbound from J22 A672 (Rishworth Moor) to J23 A640 New Hey Road (Huddersfield). “Travel time is around 30 minutes. Lanes one (of three) was closed.” It is not yet known whether anyone was injured in the fire. A car and caravan fire is caused chaos on the M62 eastbound Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has issued a rallying cry to his party to drive Boris Johnson from No 10 saying he was not “worthy” to be Prime Minister. In his keynote address to his party’s annual conference, Sir Ed said the Tories could only be ousted from power if the Lib Dems take seats from them at the next general election. He launched a bitter personal attack on Mr Johnson accusing him of a “total lack of shame or decency”, saying the Conservative Party had become an “ugly, ugly sight” under his leadership. In his first live address since becoming leader last year, Sir Ed said the Lib Dems’ win in the recent Chesham and Amersham by-election, where they overturned a 16,000 Conservative majority, showed they could take seats in the so-called Tory “blue wall” across southern England. 10 HUDDERSFIELD DAILY EXAMINER MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2021 Denis Kilcommons Wry look at life from our man in Honley ... email him at denis.kilcommons@yahoo.co.uk Why we should read all about it... PROFESSOR Angus Fletcher in America says literature is clinically proven to alleviate grief, trauma and loneliness and promote love, empathy and joy. “Our world has become addicted to computer technology and we’re putting more of that into human heads,” he says. “What we should be doing instead is encouraging our kids and ourselves to read a little bit more. A small amount of literature every day has the power to radically change our human performance.” Even 10 minutes a day can make a difference, he says, and it also works with watching drama on TV, listening to a play on radio, or being read a story. So those hours watching Game of Thrones were not wasted, despite what my wife said. By coincidence, I received a notification from Amazon that, as well as logging every purchase I have ever made over the last 20 years, also monitors the use of my Kindle e-reader. It told me I have read literature for 115 consecutive days and for 60 straight weeks. By heck, applying the Professor’s thesis to these statistics must mean I’m able to dismiss trauma with a laugh and bring joy wherever I go. Or, more likely, whenever I leave. Still, same result. He adds: “There is nothing better to watch in history than Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Life is not about getting the grail. Life is about going with a group of friends in an impossible adventure to nowhere and that’s the joy of it.” Which in a way makes sense. Life is a great adventure and, on a journey that continues to surprise and delight, I have had a fair share of barmpots as pals who were every bit as daft as John Cleese and the Python crew. Literature provides entry into other lives and experiences and enriches our own. Long may the journey continue, both in reality and books. But watch out for those Knights Who Say Ni... It sounds as if the ice cream van has run out ONE of the most vivid memories of childhood, according to a survey, was the sound of the music played by the ice cream van, although it often meant something different according to what parents told their children. Some mums and dads said it only played music when it had no ice cream. “Oh no, he’s run out again.” More inventive parents said it didn’t sell ice cream at all, but was a music bus, according to an internet site of childhood memories. One mum said: “Isn’t it sweet how they drive through the neighbourhood to play music for you?” When asked why children ran to it, she said they were requesting tunes. In reality, the ice cream van could be both a great experience for youngsters and a strain on the family purse, which probably led to a few white lies. Other fibs parents have confessed to: “My son and I spent 10 minutes looking for his chocolate coins when I knew all along I’d eaten them the day before,” said Mandy, while one dad who got fed up of waiting for the toaster, convinced his children to eat ‘cold toast’. “It’s now their favourite food.” Many children have refused to eat Brussels sprouts until mum said they were baby cabbages, and how about the dad that told his children to call for mummy if they woke up in the night because dads can’t hear in the dark. “It actually worked till my wife found out.” More traditional white lies include Father Christmas is watching you; we’re almost there; carrots will make you see in the dark; I didn’t bring my purse with me today; if you watch too much TV your eyes will go square; if you keep making that face, it will stay Some parents told their kids the ice cream van only played music when they’d run out that way; if you tell lies your nose will grow; if you leave the house with wet hair, you’ll catch a cold; Father Christmas prefers a beer and crisps to a mince pie and milk; and your pet went to live on a farm in the country. The Monty Python team homefront THE piece I wrote about naming houses brought a response from Bronwen Cruickshank. “I was born in an end-terrace house in Cowlersley named Kia Ora. I believe it’s a New Zealand Maori greeting meaning good health. “I considered naming a previous house I lived in with my ex-husband Broken House: Bro from Bronwen and Ken from Kenneth. I decided against this but it would have been quite apt as this was what happened to our marriage.” Now home is what was Hove Edge Post Office, where husband Stan was Sub-Postmaster for 21 years until it closed in 2008. The post box was sealed and painted black and they added a black cast-iron oval plaque with The Old Post Office embossed around the edge and the White Rose of Yorkshire in the middle. Along with the Post Office red door, it marks a small piece of local history. all a-bored... MARIA and I waited an hour at Manchester Airport for her sister Virginia to arrive back from Seattle. The journey from the Holme Valley had been fraught because of traffic along Woodhead Road just before you trickle through Tintwistle, which always sounds like a character from Last of the Summer Wine. We had time to reflect back to the 1960s when we used this same airport as our gateway to the world, when flying on a jet plane was exciting, we dressed up for the journey, there was less rush and fewer flights, and it was unheard of to be required to arrive two hours before departure. Waiting and watching we realised today’s airports are more like bus stations. Travellers are blase about flying halfway round the world, have bored expressions and dress down to such a degree, I was surprised some didn’t step through the gate wearing pyjamas.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2021 HUDDERSFIELD DAILY EXAMINER 11 Huddersfield Town Hall and, inset, council leader Shabir Pandor Adele’s new love Adele has appeared to confirm her romance with American sports agent Rich Paul. The chart-topping singer, 33, shared a photo on Instagram showing them posing together in a photobooth and captioned the image with a love heart emoji. london-born Adele and Paul, based in Cleveland, Ohio, have been linked in recent months. News Adele and Rich Paul new model considered at kirklees council Expert has say on town hall system By tony earnshaw tony.earnshaw@trinitymirror.com @LDRTony A locAl government expert has been appointed to advise councillors in Kirklees as they investigate whether to adopt a new system to make key decisions. Mark Edgell, a principal advisor to the local Government Association (lGA), will work with the council’s corporate Governance and Audit committee as it considers a committee model of governance. Adopting it would mean the end of the current leader and cabinet system which, in recent years, has been entirely made up of senior labour councillors as the party controlled the council. It could affect anything from spending on highways projects to the delivery of the massive town centre blueprints in Huddersfield and Dewsbury. The decision-making structure currently operated by Kirklees council is a leader and cabinet System. The leader is elected by full council for a term determined by council and leads the cabinet. councillors in the cabinet are appointed by the leader. Between two and nine councillors can be appointed Adopting it would mean the end of the current leader and cabinet system to the cabinet though the Kirklees model is currently 10-strong. Under a committee System decisions are made by committees, which comprise members from all political groups. committees receive briefings and commission reviews to develop policy. The council appoints the committees and sets their terms of reference. overview and scrutiny is optional under this model. The appointment of Mr Edgell comes almost four months after a joint party motion to explore a committee system – presented by the liberal Democrats – found favour with all opposition groups. They said increasing the participation of councillors would allow for transparency of decisionmaking, proper scrutiny and challenge, and more open governance. The move came hard on the heels of May’s local elections, with no party achieving a majority, thus leaving the council under no overall control. Any formalised arrangement could take a year to finalise. It would be voted on at next year’s council AGM in May 2022. Supporters of the proposal say it would end the ‘one-party stranglehold’ on Kirklees council. Their SpaceX capsule parachuted into the ocean just before sunset, not far from where their chartered flight began three days earlier. The all-amateur crew was the first to circle the world without a professional astronaut. The billionaire who paid undisclosed millions for the trip and his three guests wanted to show that ordinary people could blast into orbit by themselves, and SpaceX founder Elon Musk took them on as the company’s first rocket-riding tourists. SpaceX’s fully automated Dragon capsule reached an unusually high altitude of 363 miles after Wednesday night’s lift-off. Surpassing the International Space Station by 100 miles, the passengers savoured views of Earth through a large bubble-shaped window added to the top of the capsule. The four streaked back through the atmosphere early on Saturday evening, the first space travellers to end their flight in the Atlantic since Apollo 9 in 1969. Stay home, female staff told by Taliban Female employees in the Kabul city government have been told to stay home, with work only allowed for those who cannot be replaced by men, the interim mayor of afghanistan’s capital said, detailing the latest restrictions on women by the new Taliban rulers. The decision to prevent most female city workers from returning to their jobs is another sign that the Taliban, who overran Kabul last month, are enforcing their harsh interpretation of Islam despite initial promises by some that they would be tolerant and inclusive. In their previous rule in the 1990s, the Taliban had barred girls and women from schools, jobs and public life. In recent days, the new Taliban government issued several decrees rolling back the rights of girls and women. It told female middle- and high school students that they could not return to school for the time being, while boys in those grades resumed studies over the weekend. Afghan women march to demand their rights under the Taliban rule during a demonstration yesterday Female university students were informed that studies would take place in gender-segregated settings from now on, and that they must abide by a strict Islamic dress code. Under the US-backed government deposed by the Taliban, university studies had been co-ed, for the most part. On Friday, the Taliban shut down the Women’s affairs ministry, replacing it with a ministry for the “propagation of virtue and the prevention of vice” and tasked with enforcing Islamic law. On Sunday, just over a dozen women staged a protest outside the ministry, holding up signs calling for the participation of women in public life. “Why are they (the Taliban) taking our rights?” said one of the protesters, 30-year-old Basira Tawana. “We are here for our rights and the rights of our daughters.” The protest lasted for about 10 minutes. after a short verbal confrontation with a man, the women got into cars and left, as Taliban in two cars observed from nearby. Over the past months, Taliban fighters had broken up several women’s protests by force. elsewhere in the city, interim Kabul mayor Hamdullah Namony gave his first news conference since being appointed by the Taliban. He said that before the Taliban takeover last month, just under onethird of close to 3,000 city employees were women, and that they had worked in all departments. mr Namony said on Sunday the female employees have been ordered to stay home, pending a further decision. He said exceptions were made for women who could not be replaced by men, including some in the design and engineering departments and the attendants of public toilets for women. mr Namony did not say how many female employees were forced to stay home. Unison said a consultation among its members showed that four out of five were not happy with the pay rise and want to challenge the Government. Opposition to the pay rise will be discussed at Unison’s virtual health conference today. the union said tens of thousands of “exhausted” staff, including nurses, healthcare assistants, ambulance workers and hospital porters, were fed up of being “taken for granted”. With other sectors boosting wages to attract workers, Unison warned that many health staff are likely to quit for less stressful, better paid jobs elsewhere. Inflation has already wiped out the wage rise NHS workers received, said Unison. the union had called for a pay rise of at least £2,000, saying the 3% increase delivers The Government offered health workers a 3% pay increase this for NHS staff earning more than £70,000, but those on the lowest wages are receiving under £600. the union will now launch an indicative ballot to see how many of its health members would be prepared to take the sustained and widespread industrial action it believes is needed to change the Government’s decision. Unison head of health Sara Gorton said: “the fact that so many health staff say they are willing to stand together to challenge the 3% should make the Government think twice. “Many feel so let down they’re telling us they feel like quitting overnight. “Boris Johnson said he would give the NHS what it needed. Instead, rising costs mean staff will be no better off, adding to low morale, burnout and disillusion. “Hospital admissions are rising, the backlog feels overwhelming, and the threat of the worst winter ever is looming large. “Unison gave the pay review body and the Government compelling evidence that a minimum £2,000 rise would be enough to persuade people to stay. But both chose to disregard this.” the Royal College of Nursing urged the Government to reconsider the pay award last week after its members said in a ballot that it was unacceptable. Other unions are also balloting health workers over pay.

14 HUDDERSFIELD DAILY EXAMINER MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2021 Fashion Focus JOANNE Watkinson past is present in fashion Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. A heavyweight topic explained to me perfectly via the magic of the Little People, Big Dreams books. Books which anyone with children in their lives should be aware of. They explain, without patronising the reader, subjects that it took until adulthood for me to comprehend, such as racism, prejudice, privilege, ambition and determination, introducing the world’s most brilliant minds to the future most brilliant minds. So there I was, sitting cross-legged on the bed with my youngest reading the highly compressed version of this theory, when Q&A i would like a Q “grown-up” co-ord that i can wear on the weekends that isn’t pyjamas, something i can leave the house in. But not a tracksuit. Here you go, A one “grown up” co-ord which comes in three different colour options. Kaia Gerber my tiny mind started to wonder about how this highly complex hypothesis affects fashion. Fashion constantly evolves. Although it nods backwards and takes inspiration from bygone eras, we don’t ever go backwards. There is constant improvement, updating, enhancing and development of everything from shapes to fabric. Second Hand September always highlights how designers are inspired by vintage clothing, taking the patterns from yesteryear and making them in modern-day fabrics, unheard of when the original was made. The Met Gala 2021 was full of celebrities wearing dresses “inspired” by vintage fashion. Realitystar-turned model Kendall Jenner wore a Givenchy gown inspired by the dress Hubert De Givenchy made for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, while model Kaia Gerber (daughter of Cindy Crawford) wore an Oscar de La Renta gown inspired by a Dior design worn by Bianca Jagger. Often, however, the originals can’t be improved upon. It is the accessories, the styling of a look, that dates it and that is what evolves. While 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s trends continue to inspire how we dress, modern-day styling avoids us looking like we are lost in a time warp. It can be as subtle as pairing trainers with a dress, switching a pointed stiletto for a square-toed mule, rolling a jean leg instead of turning it up, a shirt cuff that comes longer than the jacket sleeve, a top-handle bag instead of a clutch. It’s the nuances in fashion that keep it moving and keep it fresh. Darwin knew, he just left it to me to write the bit about fashion. Ian Pears said he would be writing a Regulation 28 letter to the authority after hearing how 24-year-old Chloe English had climbed over fencing on May 14 and then jumped from the Victorian bridge off Halifax town centre. He spoke out after Chloe’s father, Richard, said he was horrified at the mounting death toll at the bridge with Mr Pears saying he had investigated the matter and agreed something should be done. The ornate iron and stone bridge crosses the valley of the River Hebble, and connects the town to roads to Bradford and Leeds. It opened in 1871. It is not the first time coroners have attempted to improve public safety at this particular bridge. Following the harrowing inquest into 11-year-old Ursula Keogh’s death in January 2018, senior coroner Martin Fleming, urged Calderdale Council to act faster to prevent any more deaths from the historic bridge. A council official summoned to the inquest, told Mr Fleming temporary fencing was too difficult due to planning issues but said they would install a permanent structure by May 2019. Calderdale said it would install new fencing at the location as part of its suicide prevention plan and new CCTV cameras were installed, which have already been used to alert the council and partners to vulnerable people on the bridge. Additional works also took place to install anti-climb mesh and new sloping metal covers on existing features, to reduce accessibility to the bridge’s parapets. Two other people took their own lives from the bridge during 2017 and there have been several others, including 24-year-old Amy Fitzgerald. At Rainbow Bridge, which spans the M62 at Scammonden in neighbouring Kirklees, so many people had taken their lives from that spot that coroner Peter Merchant demanded action. Highways England finally carried out £1m work and deaths from this bridge are thankfully now a distant memory. Calderdale has been contacted for comment. in brief Lorry driver rule change is ‘dangerous’ Plans to continue to relax the maximum driving time for lorry drivers have been attacked as “dangerous, reckless and potentially illegal” by a leading trade union. Unite, which represents lorry drivers, said it understood a technical consultation was under way on continuing the relaxation on driving hours from October 4 until early in the new year. The union said existing regulations allow for a “temporary relaxation” in driving hours, but warned that a six-month extension was a permanent change, adding that it is now seeking legal advice on the matter. Unite voiced concern that the extended driving hours, brought in to tackle the shortage of lorry drivers, was having a cumulative effect on driver fatigue. The shortage of drivers in the industry is largely a result of workers leaving the sector, said Unite, adding that an estimated 600 drivers leave the industry every week. Unite national officer Adrian Jones said: “This is a dangerous and reckless decision by the Government. The Government should immediately drop its plans to extend driving hours. “Lorry drivers are already working excessive hours and the cumulative effect on fatigue will increase the risk of accidents and damage their health. “Rather than short-term fixes to the driver shortage, the Government needs to be implementing long-term solutions. “Drivers need permanent pay rises, rather than one-off bonuses, to reflect their skills and crucial role in delivering foods and goods across the UK. “Also action needs to be taken to introduce minimum standards on pay and conditions, to end once and for all the race to the bottom and undercutting of wages which is at the heart of the current lorry driver shortages.” A Government spokesperson said: “We recognise businesses are facing a range of challenges and we are taking steps to support them, including streamlining the process for new HGV drivers and increasing the number of driving tests. “Progress has already been made in testing and hiring, with improving pay, working conditions and diversity.”

People who set a savings target save up to £550 a year more than people who don’t, according to the Money Advice Service. Jess says: “Work out the rough amount you’ll spend on each person and add them all up to set your target. Monitor your savings to see if you are on the right path.” Also keep an eye on your spending. “Use an app to show you all of your transactions and give you monthly spending reports so that you can see which spending areas have saving potential,” she adds. Draw up your Christmas budget Tafari Smith, head of savings at RCI Bank, suggests taking the Christmas budgeting process a step further. “Work out your entire spend on gift, food and entertaining, and where you can save a bit of money,” Tafari says. “Preparing a weekly or even monthly meal plan in the run up to Christmas is a great way to get organised and cut down your costs.” If you have built up some Christmas savings, resist the temptation to raid them for any other purpose, he adds. grab it soon ALDI’S popular Christmas hampers will be on sale soon with nine to choose from. He also suggests taking advantage of great supermarket deals in the run-up to Christmas, especially non-perishables or freezer fillers. “The price of popular items like turkey or ham inflate in December so it can be worth stocking up ahead of time.” Andy Barr, personal finance expert and co-founder of pricetracking website alertr.co.uk, says save money by having nights in rather than constantly going out. “Save money with a homemade meal or takeaway, a movie night, pamper night or even a house party. “Ask everyone to bring a dish and a bottle to spread the cost.” While many dashed out to get their nails, hair, eyebrows and eyelashes done the moment lockdown ended, question whether your beauty regime needs to cost as much as it did before the pandemic. “Embrace your natural beauty and save too,” Andy says.

Best value cities for a bargain break City breaks are the top choice for holidaying Britons, with more than one-in-five planning to travel to a European city in the coming months, according to new research. Post Office Travel Money’s annual City Costs Barometer found that the best value is in Eastern European cities, which fill nine of the top 10 places in a survey of 40 cities. Lisbon is the only city in Western Europe to break their stranglehold and rate among the 10 cheapest places for bargain hunters. Three emerging Eastern European city destinations – Tirana, Katowice and Vilnius – were found to offer better value than more established ones like Prague and Budapest. At £132 for 12 typical city break items – including a range of drinks, an evening meal for two with wine, two nights’ three-star weekend accommodation, sightseeing and city transport – Albania’s capital, Tirana, is a third of the cost of the five Scandinavian capital cities surveyed, which were most expensive in the survey. Tirana is also far cheaper than its closest competitors. Runner-up Katowice, in Poland, is 24% more expensive at £164, while prices in the third-placed Lithuanian capital Vilnius are 26% higher at £166. All three can now be reached direct from the UK on low-cost flights. A return flight in early October can cost as little as £28 per person to Katowice. However, Eastern European cities do not have a complete stranglehold on value. A year-on-year fall in the average cost of two nights’ accommodation from £80 to £73 has helped Lisbon climb six places up the top 10 into fourth place. Easily the cheapest city in Western Europe at £180 for the barometer basket, prices in the Portuguese capital are less than half those in eurozone favourites Bruges (£370), Amsterdam (£379) and Venice (£382). Nick Boden, head of Post Office Tirana, Albania Aerial view of Katowice, above, and Vilnius, right Travel Money, said: “Sterling is currently stronger against every European currency than a year ago, which has had a positive impact on prices abroad. However, the wide price variations we found means Britons planning city breaks would be wise to do their homework and consider the costs they will incur abroad as well as the exchange rate. Comparing costs for accommodation, food, drink and sightseeing in different cities could save them hundreds of pounds.” The biggest drop in barometer costs has been in Ljubljana, where prices have plunged by 15% to £230, taking the Slovenian capital to 13th place, its highest ever position. There have also been big falls for Madrid (down 12.6% to £260, 16th) and Paris (down 9.2% to £340, 28th). I had been in the Vulcan pub in Huddersfield for the night had a nice evening and, having realised I had missed the last bus, I was walking towards Bob’s Taxis and I noticed there was a group of around five to six people aged about 18-23 stood around a man who had fallen badly in the main road. I approached them to see if they needed any help and to check they had called an ambulance which they had. They got him across the road and sat him down outside Bob’s Taxis and the bloke had a nasty gash to his nose so one of them went into the taxi office to get some tissue and then cleaned the bloke’s face up. The bloke was quite confused and a bit agitated but we all worked to keep him calm till the ambulance arrived. Talking to the group, I think one of them was called Tom and he made me laugh by saying: “You ought to come out with us one night”. I wish I’d taken your number down, I was so impressed by how nice they all were and actually cared to make sure the bloke was OK. How many people would have just walked past? I think Tom said they went to a certain social club in Rastrick so if I am ever in the area I might call in and if you are there buy you all a drink. MARTIN CluNeS reprises his role as a veteran police detective on the hunt for a notorious serial burglar and rapist in this gripping real-life drama. The story is told over four consecutive nights, as police track the man whose 17-year reign of terror left thousands of elderly people in london living in fear. In the first series, Manhunt, Clunes took the role of DCI Colin Sutton, who tenaciously pursued serial killer levi Bellfield. Based on Sutton’s real diaries, this sequel begins with shocking scenes. MANhUNT: ThE NIghT STALkER ITV, 9pm An 82-year-old woman with dementia has been robbed and attacked, and is discovered cowering in her wardrobe, absolutely terrified. The man the press dubbed the Night Stalker committed his first offence in 1992, but it’s ten years on and he’s become active again. He’s never left a fingerprint or let a witness see his face, and now hunting him down is a priority. His attacks are unique and bear similar hallmarks – light bulbs taken out to ensure darkness, entire panes of glass removed from windows. Dressed entirely in black, and masked by a balaclava, he targets elderly victims and subjects them to frightening ordeals, whilst also robbing them. Colin is brought in to look at the case to see if any avenues of the investigation have been missed over the years. There must be a schoolboy error or a clue to the criminal’s location? Colin examines the evidence hoping to get the first glimpse of a man who has eluded police for a decade. IN ASSOCIATION WITH BusinessLive SOAP Watch EMMERDALE ITV,7pm Paddy can’t believe it when Marlon not only accepts Al as a potential investor into the pub but offers to sell him his entire stake. Paddy asks Kim if she will help him to get rid of Al. She realises that she can take advantage of his desperation. Elsewhere, Will’s loyalty is rewarded as Kim appoints him as her new Estate Manager, while Diane’s uneasy when her date, Michael, pictured above, is more interested in his jigsaw than he is in her. CORONATION STREET ITV, 7.30pm & 8.30pm Zeedan is trying to play happy families and offers Alya a loan of £50,000. But when Zeedan attacks Ryan for cheating on Alya, she’s furious, pointing out that he was nowhere to be seen during Geoff’s reign of terror and he should shove his money. There’s disaster over a typo when George shows Freda the Order of Service for Norris’s funeral. She points out that he got Norris’s date of birth wrong. And Kelly, above, feels rejected by a new ally. EASTENDERS BBC1, 8.05pm Linda is determined that Mick will be the baby’s legal father when the birth certificate is signed. Convinced she knows the truth, Rainie goes to drastic lengths, while Mick tries to protect Linda. Rocky, below, overhears Ethan and Sonia talking about their date, with a giddy Sonia telling Ethan that he definitely has potential. But later Rocky sees something that sends him into a rage. And Jean visits Stacey in prison to let her know that she’s been charged over drug possession. #EXAMINERAWARDS WIN THE RECOGNITION YOUR BUSINESS DESERVES ENTER NOW... Half-back Russell was outstanding and assisted three of the Claret and Gold’s eight tries in addition to his own touchdown and five goals. They led twice in the opening period and ran in five tries overall but rarely threatened to end a 21-year wait for victory on Huddersfield soil. ian Watson’s Giants led 22-12 at half-time, crucially striking back with two converted tries just before the interval. Winger Senior acrobatically touched down after four minutes, with Russell missing the conversion. undaunted, the Centurions took the attack to the Giants. Twice they went close before Australian prop Jai Whitbread thundered over from James Bell’s pass. Stand-off Ryan Brierley, who spent 12 months as a Giant in 2016 and is expected to leave Leigh for pastures new next season, converted. Kenny joins the Tigers By chris ostick KENNY Edwards says seeing how his former Huddersfield Giants team-mates Suaia Matagi and Jordan Turner have turned their careers around at Castleford Tigers was a key part in his decision to move to the Mend-A-Hose Jungle. The New Zealander is joining the Claret and Gold’s Super League rivals on a year-long loan. “I can’t wait, and it is amazing for me,” said the 32-year-old. “I am good mates with Suaia Matagi and Jordan Turner who I was with at Huddersfield last year. I was speaking to Suaia because he started at Castleford in the pre-season and from the get-go said how professional it was. He loved the pre-season and I actually started to get a little jealous. “The way he and Jordan have sort of turned their careers around while being there. JT has turned into one of the best wingers in the competition this year. The style of footy that Castleford plays, I really think it is going to suit me.” Edwards is one of a glut of players leaving the Giants including Darnell Mcintosh, Lee Gaskell, Aiden Sezer, James Cunningham, James Gavet, Sam Wood and Alfie Schultz. And the club have confirmed Joe Wardle is also on his way. “Joe has had a lot of injuries over the last couple of years which has frustrated him,” said boss Ian Watson. ”He is a high quality player, but at Huddersfield we need a settled and a durable side going forward.”

That was much to the delight of former Town winger Joe Lolley and hot prospect Brennan Town’s Sorba Thomas tries to get a cross in against Forest Johnson, who gave Levi Colwill a torrid time up the Forest right. That allowed the visitors to take a deserved first-half lead that everybody saw coming, as the rapid Johnson breezed past the Chelsea loanee on his way to crossing for Lewis Grabban to head past a helpless Lee Nicholls. All the attention to fine details and cool heads that we have praised handsomely over the past six games went out of the window as Forest grew and grew in confidence, and Town were completely unable to find any kind of rhythm in attack. The opportunities were there if the Terriers had had the wit to exploit them, with harry Toffolo given acres of space to operate inside the Forest half, but time and again Town’s moves would break down through miscommunication and poor touches. The game serves as a reminder that Town have not yet cracked everything, with Forest the first side to truly exploit the drawbacks of the 3-4-3 system that has served Carlos Corberan’s side so well over the past few weeks. A switch to 4-3-3 at the break failed to have its intended impact, and in fact the man introduced to make that change possible, Ollie Turton, was the man who gave the ball away just outside the Town box to allow Forest to work a shooting chance for Ryan Yates. Nicholls was able to keep that out low to his right, but Turton was slow to react as the ball fell into Lolley’s path and could only Goals tOWN: None fOrest: Grabban (22), Nicholls (48, og) Possession tOWN: 70% fOrest: 30% shoTs tOWN: 10 fOrest: 7 CoRneRs tOWN: 6 fOrest: 5 MatCH FaCtS BooKinGs tOWN: Turton, Ward fOrest: Garener RefeRee Chris Kavanagh aTTendanCe 17,462 neXT uP saturday sWaNsea (a) League 3pm fOrest: Samba, Worrall, Figueiredo, McKenna, Spence (Richardson, 79), Yates, Garner, Lowe, Johnson (Colback, 79), Lolley (Mighten, 61), Grabban. That left Town with much too much to do over the rest of the second half and Forest were able to put 10 men behind the ball to defend their two-goal lead. This was not an outright abject performance, but the need for a bit of fine-tuning from Corberan is clear, and Town need to find another way to play when their plan A fails.

But we are yet to see a substitute come on and have a profound influence on a game bar Toffolo’s return from Covid against Sheffield United - and even that was simply the introduction of a regular starter to move the side into their preferred formation. Town are a long way away from panic stations, but if they want to avoid more frustrating afternoons like this and get back into games when things are going against them they need to find an impact player capable of making a splash off the bench. Youngster Mipo Odubeko has not yet shown much but is a young This was not an outright abject performance, but the need for a bit of fine tuning is clear player making his first steps in senior football. Getting Rolando Aarons up to speed and both Aaron Rowe and Danny Grant back fit could go a long way to offering Town a different dimension to their play. That gives Corberan plenty to ponder as he prepares for a full week on the training pitch ahead of Saturday’s trip to Swansea, and he must make sure this knock to their confidence does not turn into a deeper slump for the players. The defeat to Stoke last weekend at least came with the benefit of having been competitive and given a well-organised side as good as they got. This loss will come as a much sterner test of Town’s mentality. The aura of near-invulnerability they had built up over the last month or so has now evaporated, and opponents have been shown a way to counter-act Town’s strengths that could serve as a blueprint for watching analysts. We can write this off as the kind of bad day at the office that all sides inevitably have, but they must now prove once again that they have the right stuff to keep bouncing back. By steven chicken @examinerHTAFC Terriers boss Carlos Corberan expects to see more wit and invention from his side after saturday’s defeat to Forest. The Town boss acknowledged his team were some way below par and deserved to lose after failing to create any substantial chances from open play and conceding two preventable goals. That gave Forest their first win of the season and brought Huddersfield Town’s run of good performances and largely good results to a screeching halt, with the head coach admitting his side need more work on breaking down sides who look to absorb pressure and play on the counter-attack. Corberan said: “My thoughts are that they started the game better than we started the game. “They started competing and winning some challenges that we can’t lose [if we want] to compete better in the game, but after we stopped a little bit their first minutes, we had the opportunity with the ball to try to attack them better. “For me we didn’t attack well enough and when you don’t attack well against a team that is waiting more, you are going to suffer counter-attacks and, unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened in the game. “They created counter-attacks from our time with the ball - we were creating more counter-attacks for them by not having enough passion or taking good enough positions on the pitch to allow us to break the structure they were creating in defence. “The first opportunity they had in the first counter-attack they had they scored the [first] goal, and that made it more difficult for us because you need to be attack with more intelligence and be more clever in those moments because you know you’re going to suffer those counter-attacks. i felt we needed one player more to attack up the right side because with three centre-backs for me it was not enough. “That’s why we introduced Turton, but in the first action in the second half that they had, they scored a goal we need to avoid to be a competitive team. Town’s Carlos Corberan “As soon as we don’t avoid these types of situation everything is more complicated. “After the goal i can only tell you we didn’t manage our positions well enough, we didn’t manage the spaces well, and we didn’t make the impact we have to do. even if they didn’t create counter-attacks, we didn’t use in any moment the spaces to drive, to face and create something. “The only chance we had that could have changed the game was the header from the set-piece by Lees. “if that’s a goal, the game changes, but it’s true we didn’t attack well and they were better than us doing what they were doing and we were worse than them doing what we had to do.” He added: “For me we haven’t attacked any team being a 5-4-1 and being more compact in the defensive half. “every game is different and the last game [against Blackpool] was [against a] 4-4-2 with more pressing and when you break the press you are going to attack more space. “Always in football it’s easier to attack space than it is to attack without space. When you attack without space there’s a point of quality and understanding of the situation that come together and can make the difference between making a chance and not making a chance. “We didn’t the find the right positions on the pitch or the right behaviours of the players to break the defensive structure they made.” OFFICIALHORSERACING COMMENTARY AND RESULTS Cal09016094248 Calscost65pperminplusyourtelephonecompany’snetworkaccesscharge.18+only.
