Revenge was on the Indian cricket team's mind as they faced the mighty Australians in the final of the 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

After more than a month of riveting cricket, two teams were left fighting for the ultimate prize in cricket. India and Australia looked to lift the famous trophy.  

Both teams had previous history at this stage, with the Aussies breaking India's hearts at this exact point of the tournament in the 2003 World Cup. India were desperate to get one over a team that also dealt them heartbreak in the 2015 World Cup semifinal.

An exciting final clash brought the curtain down on the tournament.

9:25pm (IST)/2:55am (AEDT): AUSTRALIA WIN! Glenn Maxwell swings it away on the leg side and the batters come back for a second, to win Australia sixth World Cup!  Australia 241/4 in 43 overs (Labuschagne 58*, Maxwell 2*). 

9:05pm (IST)/2:35am (AEDT): Australia are continuing to cruise here, with this partnership worth 178 already. Australia 225/3 in 40 overs (Labuschagne 53*, Head 128*). 

8:45pm (IST)/2:15am (AEDT): Only a matter of time here, before Australia finish off this run chase. Even if these two aren't around at the end, this match is going only one way. Australia 192/3 in 35 overs (Labuschagne 41*, Head 107*).   

8:25pm (IST)/1:55am (AEDT): Australia are well on their way to victory here. 20 overs still to play, and they need just 74 runs, with 7 wickets in hand. It would take something truly extraordinary for India to turn it around from here. Australia 167/3 in 30 overs (Labuschagne 37*, Head 86*).  

8:05pm (IST)/1:35am (AEDT): India have just allowed the game to drift a little bit in the last five overs. The run-scoring has been easy, and Head and Labuschagne have taken full advantage of that. Australia 135/3 in 25 overs (Labuschagne 27*, Head 65*).  

7:48pm (IST)/1:18am (AEDT): This has been a good period of play for Australia. The required run rate is well in touch, and they haven't lost any more wickets. India need to strike quickly to get back in this one. Australia 104/3 in 20 overs (Labuschagne 17*, Head 44*).

7:28pm (IST)/12:58am (AEDT): The game is just starting to settle into a nice rhythm. Australia just need to bat another 8-10 overs without losing a wicket, and that will put a bit more of the onus on India to attack. Australia 78/3 in 15 overs (Labuschagne 8*, Head 27*).

7:13pm (IST)/12:43am (AEDT): Australia have made a brisk start, but have lost perhaps one or two wickets more than they would've liked. Australia 60/3 in 10 overs (Labuschagne 0*, Head 19*).

6:58pm (IST)/12:28am (AEDT): WICKET! Huge blow for India. The slower ball from Bumrah does for Steve Smith, and he's trapped LBW. He shoudl've reviewed though, as replays show the impact was outside off. Australia 47/3 in 7 overs (Smith 4, Head 10*).

6:48pm (IST)/12:18am (AEDT): WICKET! Marsh swings at this one wide outside off stump, but he just gets a little tickle off the under-edge and KL Rahul takes a routine catch. Australia 41/2 in 4.3 overs (Marsh 15, Head 8*).

In comes Mitchell Marsh.

6:33pm (IST)/12:03am (AEDT): WICKET! Shami starts with a wide, but now gets it to move away off a length to Warner. It catches the outside edge, and Kohli pouches the catch at slip. Australia 16/1 in 1.1 overs (Warner 7, Head 8*).

6:24pm (IST)/11:54pm (AEDT): 240 looks on the lower side at first glance, but this pitch isn't easy to bat on. India will be on the hunt for early wickets, but Australia will look to break the back of this chase in the first ten. David Warner on strike, up against Jasprit Bumrah. Big swing away,  catches the edge but flies between the slips for four. Australia 4/0 in 0.1 overs (Warner 4*, Head 0*).

5:54pm (IST)/11:24pm (AEDT): WICKET! Run-out on the last ball of the innings. India finish at 240. The pitch is on the slower side and this could very well prove to be a competitive total. India 240/10 in 50 overs (Siraj 9*)

5:41pm (IST)/11:11pm (AEDT): WICKET! Here goes India's final hope in their batting. Hazlewood uses the variations. Suryakumar tries to scoop it fine but the ball balloons in the air only for the keeper to grab it. India 226/9 in 47.3 overs (Kuldeep 6*, Siraj 0*)

5:26pm (IST)/10:56pm (AEDT): WICKET! India are going down. Zampa contributes to the wickets tally as Bumrah perishes via an LBW. India 214/8 in 44.5 overs (Suryakumar 14*, Kuldeep 0*)

Jasprit Bumrah is India's No.9.

5:21pm (IST)/10:51pm (AEDT): WICKET! Another one bites the dust. Shami swings his bat but this results in an edge. India 211/7 in 43.4 overs (Suryakumar 12*, Bumrah 0*)

5:10pm (IST)/10:40pm (AEDT): WICKET! This will dent India's chances heavily. Starc has gain brought his big match temperament to the fore. Rahul nicks one to the gloveman and departs. India 203/6 in 41.3 overs (Suryakumar 10*, Shami 0*)

5:01pm (IST)/10:31pm (AEDT): India should aim to get to 265 with 10 overs still remaining. It will depend upon when they will start the onslaught. Remember, this is the last recognized batting pair. India 197/5 in 40 overs (Rahul 64*, Suryakumar 8*)

4:30am (IST)/10:00am (AEDT): Australian captain Pat Cummins is not worried about the pitch ahead of the final against India.

"I'm not a great pitch reader, but it looked pretty firm. They've only just watered it, so yeah, give it another 24 hours and have a look, but it looks like a pretty good wicket," Cummins said.

"I think it's been a bit more high scoring here throughout the tournament.

"No doubt playing on your own wicket in your own country has some advantages, similar to wickets that you've been playing your whole life. But we've played a lot of cricket over here.

"You've got to be brave with some of the balls you use, slower balls, bouncers, you've got to find that balance between mixing it up but also not go chasing too much."

IND vs AUS: Narendra Modi Stadium pitch report

Historically, the pitch at the stadium, also known as Motera, has played quite slow, assisting spin bowling. The average scoring rate over the years in ODIs has been a touch under five runs per over. However, in recent years, particularly during the IPL, the track has been quicker and has aided run-scoring. There is still something there for the spinners, but high totals are quite possible here.

Rohit Sharma, on Saturday at the pre-match press conference, confirmed that the pitch will be on the slower side.
