I'm using this in my next argument in defense of Philly.
"Oh yeah well Miss America 1924 is from Philly go birds"
And Gritty is the only Miss America I'll recognize from here on out.
It’s Grittney, bitch.
Gritty is America
It's the natural choice.
I bet youse guys threw batteries at her when she was crowned.
Chokin down cheesestesks and huckin batteries at cars down by the crick
then stop at the wawa after for some wudder and a couple more hoaaggiess
Philly is only place I know where throwing batteries is a norm.
Santa fuckin deserved it
We haven’t thrown batteries in years
Loser buys citywides for everyone.
Probably just rocks, Philly didn't get electricity until 1973.
Go Birds!
Sorry but your comment reminded me of this article from Clickhole, lol https://clickhole.com/mean-but-true-the-fun-fact-on-the-side-of-this-u-haul-is-that-there-are-no-tens-in-pennsylvania/
Savage
"my god, she has all her teeth!"
No boils on her face...so hot...
How long ago do you people think the 1920s were?
Like 2-3 hundred years ago right
Also from Philly.
"The gang finds new Dee" . . . 9:35am.
On a Wednesday
Lmao
She’s a beauty tbh.
I agree. She’s a pretty miss.
For everyone thinking she look unkempt - this was an intentional hair style.
For perspective, imagine in 100 years folks looking back at us wondering why there’s holes in our pants. “Were they too poor to afford new ones or did they not know how to sew?”
Twist: 100 years from now, No one wears pants
Everyone just shirtcocking everywhere all the time
Ah. The ol' Donald Duck look.
[removed]
Or blouselabing. Girls can do it too.
What about Toptwatting
I’m definitely using this as my excuse next time I visit my parents and my mother makes a comment on my hair
"It's not messy, it's vintage"
Behead of its time.
Behead? Are you french?
Ive taken to the habit of threatening to shave my head everytime my nanny tells me to put a comb through it! I've done it twice now just for fun so she knows I'll do it!
How old are you?
28, my hair is brushed and combed regularly but she'll catch me coming inside on a windy day and talk shit saying 'shes just messing with me' but it gets old. Nanny = grandma in my family in case that's why you were asking my age.
My hair looks like this. I brush it regularly, wash and condition it weekly and use anti frizz and tangle creams and it still looks like this. Some people just have hobo hair I guess.
I think curly hair is great. I’m on board with letting natural hair be normal.
My hair used to be frizzy all the time until I tried the curly girl method. r/curlyhair is a good starting place. Turns out my hair is wavy and if I don’t put product in, it looks like this.
I kind of feel that way about the holes in pants thing already.
Most jeans have been pre-distressed for decades now. Holes just take it a step further
[removed]
If I'm not mistaken, it's the other way around. It started with holes as a fashion statement, usually ripped below the knee, or at the hem.
My mother said she and her friends in the 70s used to drive over their jeans with a car until it had the perfect 'well worn' look...they also used to iron their hair so.
Yeah when I was a kid people would cut the knees out, it was a badge of honor if your knee holes were from natural wear and tear.
I already look back at my emo day pictures, and wish I had brushed through all my back combing.
There's a hole in the ozone layer with our name on it my former emo friend
The emo kids have nothing on the beehive/aquanet generation.
She also has curly hair and obviously there weren’t many curl girl hair products yet
My grandma also had wavy hair and she'd tell me how my great-grandma would brush her hair until her scalp was raw and then iron her hair. I inherited my grandma's hair type fortunately!
My grandma had curly hair. Every night her sister (her mom passed when she was a baby) would twist her curls and pin them up so the curls would stay tight and not get frizzy.
She obviously hadn’t tried Johnson and Johnson’s radium infused lilac-scented shampoo
“Now with arsenic!”
Maybe not for white people, but Black folks definitely had haircare products for curly and kinky hair by then. Madam CJ Walker became the US's first self-made female millionaire thanks to her haircare line in the very early 1900s, years before this photo was taken.
Have you seen the movie about her? It was really good but I forgot the name
I hear you, I just read about Mary Pickford and how this was the style.
She still looks like she just got railed in the back of a minivan in the middle of July with the windows up. Then put on her sash and ran onto the Miss America stage. lol
I guess that's as Philly as you can be.
Got that JBF hair
Wagon, but yes
I think the drawn-on eyebrows are what will seem bizarre in 100 years.
drawn on eyebrows have been a thing for nearly 100 years already - have y’all never seen pictures of flappers or silent film stars with drawn on brows?
Or low slung jeans that show off the underpants….. future generations won’t think ”why?”, they’ll just think “twats”.
Just like current generations.
They had brushes way before then. They were usually made out of boar bristle which was expensive and backed with silver or mother of pearl. Poor folks used combs other grooming tools made of wood. They also had tooth brushes and used tooth powder.
Her hairstyle was probably based on Mary Pickford's. It was actually intentionally styled that way, including the long spiral curls to look girlish and waif-like. It was a popular look back then.
Their idea of the perfect beauty was definitely different then but for her era this woman is what was considered very beautiful.
Mary Pickford for those curious
dick nipples you're in every single sub I'm in, I see you everywhere, what does this mean
They are on here a fuck ton and have been for a long time
Yeah seeing this thread of people talking about their name gives weird deja vu, I remember first stumbling upon dick nipples years ago and they have just taken a similar place as warlizard or shittymorph for me
You just can’t avoid dick nipples, they’re everywhere!
How many cat subs are there???
Not enough!
♾️
Yes. We counted, and there are Yes-many cat subs
Both of these women were quite lovely. Looks kinda like my grandma did back in the dayl
Sir. Your username..
Is awesome?
Your username reminds me of a question I always pose to my friends: would you rather have dicks for nipples or a nipple for a dick?
Would you rather fight 100 nipple sized dicks or one dick sized nipple?
When i need accurate info on Americas past, dick-nipples is my go to redditor
Thank you for this picture dick-nipples. She is very pretty
Mary Pickford, "America's Sweetheart" was born and raised in Canada.
[removed]
God is also one of America’s Sweethearts and he had a son named Jesus who was born in Huntsville, Alabama with white skin, blonde hair, blue eyes.
That’s Mormon Jesus. Non-Mormon Jesus was born on Mount Olympus and stole all the stories Heracles told him
And when Jesus rode into Jerusalem, he went in his jacked up F150 with a shotgun rack, Trump stickers and a Confederate flag.
And loved to go hunting with his multiple assault rifles and 'don't tread on me' stickers.
Are we not even making our own sweet hearts any more? What has happened to American manufacturing??
Unexpected30rock
Her name was Gladys.
GLADYS
That couldn't be MORE American tbh
they had brushes way before then
Who thinks people in the 1900s didn’t have hairbrushes? That’s actually kinda worrying. Some people have this notion that people back then lived like cavemen and I don’t get it.
No hairbrushes but they had cameras lol
how did they change a lightbulb before 1850?
There are remnants of combs and other tools like needles for sewing clothes from 20,000 to 30,000 years ago found in caves throughout the world!
I was just at Lascaux, and one of the things they talked about is how the scientific community has now moved to the idea that humans from the last Ice Age were much closer to us than they initially thought. The cave dwellers had trade, language, art, elaborate clothing beyond a rag over their genitals, etc.
Truly awe-inspiring stuff really.
“But what did they use for forks back then?”
Spoons.
She's beautiful to me now. I actually really dig the unruly looking (although heavily styled in actuality, perhaps) hair.
There was this girl, young woman actually, that fucking swooped into town when I was in college and hanging at the bars every weekend. She dressed cool, her hair was nuts like this, and she was just gorgeous. She was a friend of a friend who stayed in town for a few months then moved away. I was so completely in awe of her hair.
I've always been in awe of people with hair like that too, there's something so effortless about the energy of them, like a natural phenomena. It's beautiful to behold
I aspire to have this kind of wild, but purposeful style, like Brigitte Bardot. But I think I just end up looking a mess.
Picture of her with “better” hair
Edit: the amount of insults towards her are disturbing
The Pickford look does make sense now that you mention it. She was pretty Tomboyish for her time in many of her movies, and unkept long hair would have been part of the uniform. Great observation.
Hair aside, for current standards she is beautiful
Edit: laughing at the replies who are saying she isn’t beautiful knowing they’re probably neckbeards who have never been with a woman
And if she were styled with modern hair and makeup I’m sure everyone commenting negatively about her appearance would be amazed.
She has fairly fine hair, hooded eyes, and thin lips. Obviously she's objectively beautiful but her features are not "fashionable" at the moment. Source: I have very similar features.
Agree. She's plenty beautiful. I don't even think the hair is that big of a deal. However it was styled, I think most normal humans can agree that this woman is pretty.
It's because they have been conditioned to think beauty comes with specific hairstyles, make up, clothes, etc. so they have lost the ability to look past all that and just see a pretty face for a pretty face.
Right?!? I think she’s beautiful. Natural and beautiful
TiL! I wondered why half of her hair seemed abandoned to be out of place. Style really does change over the years.
Also it could’ve been very humid that day
Her name was Ruth Malcomson
Her name was darude - sandstorm
Her name was Lola
Her name was Roberta Paulson.
Her name was Giorgio
She was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there!
Her name was Ruthbert Paulmson
Her name was Robert Pattinson
Her name was Ruby Palmerson
Everyone is critical of the hair but her plan for world peace wasn’t any good either.
What was it?
I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so, because some - people out there, in our nation, don't have maps and I believe that our education, like such as South Africa -and the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should - our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S. or should help South Africa and should help Iraq and the Asian countries, so we would be able to build up our future for…
"everywhere like such as" always gets me
Somebody obviously told her to say "such as" instead of "like" but she couldn't quite bring it together.
Bro what? Im not sure if Im just tired af or that it just didnt make any sense
It's Miss South Carolina's answer from a few years ago.
It's a joke look it up on yt
because some - people out there, in our nation, don't have maps
The sad part is this is actually the right answer as to why 1/5 Americans couldn't identify the United States on a map.
Such as the Iraq and people of the world
This reads like a Trump quote
Her peace plan: she had noticed that people with glasses tended to not get in fights because they didn’t want their glasses broken. She wanted everyone to wear glasses. Unknown to her Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore was a huge fan and her ideas brought peace to the Indians, Chinese and English of the tiny island nation. They used to fight constantly. So it was a good plan but she lacked conviction to spread her ideas.
people with glasses tended to not get in fights because they didn’t want their glasses broken. She wanted everyone to wear glasses.
This is some straight Costanza shit
Cheers. I was a big Seinfield fan, and yes, it does sound like something he’d say. Like he’d reveal in one episode how is vision is just fine, but he wears big glasses to avoid fights and potential murder in 90s New York.
Something about Germany pulling itself up by its bootstraps by any means necessary in the new post-WW1 world.

Thank you for this 💕
As someone with naturally curly hair living in an area with high humidity, this is a beauty standard I can absolutely aspire to! I think she's quite lovely.
Larry David has this bit about how every generation is more attractive than the last but just imagine if someone took one single random photograph of you with no knowledge of photography in weird lighting and that photograph was representative of your entire legacy from then on out, with a hairstyle that existed well before everyone had a camera, and that was it.
I think she deserves it and she probably ripped the fuck out of the dance floor. The 20s were one hell of a time period.
I always hated my hair which looks exactly like this.
I think I'll start liking it more now.
Shoulda been born in the 1920s
More like 1905!
My hair also looks like this. I have to do so much styling to get it to look smooth and sleek, bu even a little wind or moisture causes it to go right back to its natural state, no matter how carefully I styled it. It's long and thick, but around my hairline it's quite curly.
I used to hate it, but now I like it a lot because it's my own natural texture
My girlfriend's hair is like this. I dig it hard.
I love these hair!
Don't know if it helps but I seriously like unkempt, scruffy looks on girls. It's cute to me
Love the pure romance of those windy locks
Fetching
I love this because she’s beautiful in such a normal way. With the beauty standards of today she wouldn’t even get a look in
1924: Most beautiful woman in the America. 2024: emo cashier at Walgreens
Yeah, I could imagine her wearing a Hot Topic's Sleeping With Sirens shirt and avoiding everyone at a family gathering.
I’m gettin a Trader Joe’s vibe myself

Every woman in this era looked like a young Robert Plant.
She looks like Kristen Schaal to me. I also think I like her china doll ringlets. There are lots of odd hair throughout the years. The 80s and the big fluffy poodle hair and the under cut shave thing of the last few years will probably date itself as well. This stuff comes and goes.
why r so many people hating on her i thought she was pretty lol
Yeah, she looks like a genuine, kind, and also beautiful woman. Modern pageants look like they have 30 of the same person, and they all look like a 20 year old Disney starlet.
she looks like a genuine, kind
Tell me how to get this type of radar installed
She loved her parents and was a hard worker. She was strong and brave. You can tell from her cheekbones.
Mine came free with my last Gaydar update
Looks to be a standard issue simpdar, sir.
It’s what redditors say when they see someone who is mildly attractive but not too attractive to be unobtainable. They assume everyone who is too hot for them must be a bitch, and everyone they deem obtainable must be kind and genuine
she looks like a genuine, kind,
looks can be deceiving
And I’m sure the other contestants in 1924 looked exactly like this lady too. Styles of the time are exactly that, & if you’re trying to appeal to the people voting for you, you’re going to use the most popular ones.
People! Know your history.
Miss America was a beach beauty pageant at the Atlantic City/Jersey shore. That explains the hair. Humidity, wind and curly hair are not a perfect combination. And it was totally Mary Pickford's fashion influence. She was lovely.
She is cute though
Someone's great grandma was fine.
I don’t understand why if I had lived in the 20s I’d be really good looking, but all the humans around me got more attractive. Now I’m roughly comparable to this chick and everyone looks like Kylie Jenner :(
Okay but Kylie Jenner didn’t even look like Kylie Jenner does now
Okay but in 100 years people are going to look at Kylie Jenner pics and be like…was she allergic to bees?
People have been saying similar things about her for years lol
Then they will also ask.. what were bees?
That pumped up lip look is such a turn-off.
In person or on social media?
You might need to visit r/instagramreality
People are on average healthier and it is easier to get dental and vision care, but I think the biggest difference is the changes in fashion -- cultural preferences for clothing, hair styles, and even body shapes have changed.
You might not fit the current mainstream fashion but I'm sure there are alt cultures and many people who will appreciate you for both your mind and your type of beauty!
Well, I got good news for you, you ARE living in the 20s.
So you think this woman doesn't have an attractive face? If you look like her, you're attractive today, except for the hair which isn't in style anymore.
Attractiveness inflation.
She looks so pretty and romantic
The hair makes her hot.
I'm into that shit
Philly jawns been winnin
I appreciate her having a bigger nose and winning Miss America. Nowadays everyone gets nose jobs as if having a big nose is the worst thing in the world.
Big noses do work, it's just another example of unrealistic body standards that don't make any sense in the first place.
I heard she had to show ankle to get that crown.
i know for a fact this was not the baddest bitch out 1924
Obviously she's Miss Philly. She probably beat the shit out of the other contestants as her talent and that's how she won. And she smiles about it. Yeah, she's def Miss Philly. Good to know Philly 's always been like that.
Lol you can definitely tell the men who love plastic in the comments.
The woman is beautiful and would still hold up in today's time when comparing raw beauty without enhancements of any kind
