We were in Naxos for the 1st half September, most days there were strong cool northerly winds, particularly cold in an evening. Is it normal for Naxos to have these type of winds in September?

Yes Jim, the Meltemi winds can last into September.

Not only Naxos, but all the Cyclades have northerly as the dominant wind direction.
The Meltemi helps keep the islands cooler in summer, but is sometimes uncomfortable as temperatures change in autumn. Find a sheltered beach for sunbathing, and bring a light jacket or sweater for the evening.
Agree with all the above, but I'd say you were unlucky with "strong cool northerly winds, particularly cold in an evening". In many visits to Naxos in September I haven't experienced those kinds of temperatures very often.
My flight landed Naxos early on 15th September in a force 6, from the north, but the wind died that night and the next 6 days have been very hot (32c) - absolutely no need for any cover on bare arms in the evenings and I’m on the northern side of Stelida where its usually very windy. Tomorrow I move to the southern side and the winds are forecast to pick up again which will be a welcome relief.
Spent many Septembers in Naxos, both early and late-month, and think what you experienced this year was a “one-off”.
We were on Naxos 3-8th Sept last year and had at least a couple of days which were extremely windy and quite cool at night, especially in exposed areas. It didn't bother us too much as we explored the interior of the island on those days where it was less windy. It was also pretty windy for a couple of days when we travelled to Ios after that.
This year we were on nearby islands (Koufinissi, Anti-Paros) and had a few days (roughly 3-7 Sept) I would describe as especially windy and cool at night. We also had some pretty nice weather and it seemed to get even hotter just after we went home.
It always seems a bit of a lottery in the Cyclades in late summer but winds have never ruined a trip for me so far and most islands have some beaches that are more sheltered from the wind.
