Does any one know when the new season of top gear starts??
I don't mind this show too much but do prefer watching Jeremy's ole sparring partner Tiff Needell on Fifth Gear which is currently up to ep 7 for 2005.
Only about 2 weeks, 0 days, 8 hours, 16 minutes, and 6 seconds until the new Top Gear season starts on May 22nd! :D:D
meanwhile, 5th gear has been pretty average so far this year.
mexiwi writes...
Is it shown on BBC World on Foxtel?
Has been on BBC World in the past so the new season probably will be too.
cool :) may 22nd!
i read somewhere that it was going to be back in july.
i much prefer top gear over fifth gear. tiff is too nice when reviewing things.. and he's always smiling.
5th Gear is good - cant wait for Top Gear to start again though, Jeremy Clarkson brings it to a whole new level
brewie writes...
Interesting to note that the BBC World version is an edited down 30 minute episode
Yeah I though it was, I kept coming across it just as it was finishing (supposed that's one pro for the Foxtel IQ ripoff) and noticed it kept saying it had a 30min slot. Dunno why they can't give it the full 60min.
5th gear is on Arena or one of those channels, but don't really watch it.
think the biggest part they cut out is that Reasonably Priced Car Challenge.
Which I have to say is rather boring (mostly unknown bristish star) and it's no biggie that it's gone...
Fifth Gear is a cheap imitation of Top Gear.
Clarkson could kick Tiff's arse any day.

In what? A thumb wrestle???
Clarkson is more of a "hack" at driving. He's more in tune with a common people who strive/dream to drive the cars he does.
Tiff on the other hand, has far more experience behind the wheel than Clarkson does. Tiff relates what the car is doing. He is able to extract far more out of a car than Clarkson ever could. Take a look at Tiff's review of the Audi RS6 Estate...
Clarkson seems to believe that slideways is faster. Why do you think he has the Stig?

Tiff is a champ, Jeremy and tiff go way back, they are good friends, in all of clacksons dvd's tiff likes to make an appearance! Tiff also use to be on top gear many years ago
I terms of driving, tiff has alot more experience, Jeremy's driving skills are no where as good as tiff's
on the other hand i do like jeremy and his reviews better, jeremy will bag all the crap things and have a good laugh where as tiff is all goodie, and only compliments the good things and takes it way to seriously!
brucebastard writes...

Not in driving, obviously. He's just a lot more entertaining overall.
Actually, none of the hosts on Top Gear come across as being real drivers as such - hence, The Stig. However, for sheer entertainment value, Top Gear kicks Fifth Gear's arse all over the shop.

Including F1, even if it was only brief.
Vicki Butler-Henderson and Tiff were on Top Gear until it took a break back around 2002.
Jason Plato used to be on channel 4's Driven, which naturally disappeared a few years ago.
Top Gear is by far the most entertaining of the 3 - especially with their stunts (eg playing darts with cars on a hydraulic canon and a quarry).
finally a top gear thread!
I've contemplated making one for ages, but never actually been motivated enough.
hope they test the Koenigsegg CCR this season. they didn't give the older CC8S model the gratitude it deserved - it was only a test model anyway.

Seriously, I cannot wait to see what the team has going for this new series. I just know I'll be salivating at the preview they always give on the first episode :P...
Fifth Gear is so so much better than Top Gear - Jeremy Clarkson is good but his ego has gone way out of control, and the way they have the awkward audience standing around is really irritating.
I like both, but watched the Fifth Gear on lifestyle channel last night and they had the V8 Monaro up against the V8 MG. The Monaro won, easily!
Both programs have reviewed the Monaro and both said it was the most fun and pure muscle car they had driven for years. They both also noted the price, about 30K (Sterling) which was very low for the quality of the vehicle which was very comparable to the european competition.

haha, that was great. it just wouldn't die!
i hope they have another big challenge (similar to the db9 and that ferrari vs public transport they did last year) planned for this series. those were fun to watch :)
Jeremy Clarkson squares up against a Challenger 2 tank in the new Range Rover Sport; James May and Richard Hammond play five-a-side footie with the Toyota Aygo; the Mercedes CLS AMG - a 4 door saloon that looks like a 2 door coupe and the Element, a funky, family car from Honda.
Also tonight James Nesbitt is the 'Star in a Reasonably Priced Car' and a chance for the viewer to vote for the greatest driving song of all time.
This is why I like TopGear
Tank vs RR Sport. Hehehehe ... can't wait.
I'm waiting for them to test drive the new BMW M5 and M6!
Top Gear magazine was at the Nurburgring a few months ago to test drive the new Range Rover Sport - with snow on the 'ring...
They also went out in an Aston Martin V8, although I think it was a pre-production test car.

Most recent episode is pretty good. Shocked at the fact that Jeremy didn't like the MC12... Also the segments where they have to buy a car for 1500 pounds (about $AU3750) are always hilarious.

Jeremy has a very biast and stubborn thing going on at the cool wall. Jeremy raves on and on about the DB9 simply because its British, there are alot of cars for the same money that would totally outcalass the DB9.
Also he claims that the Enzo is "Seriously Uncool" because not enough cool people would own one. Seriously it's not about the people who own it, it should be about the car itself. I frankly cant think of a cooler car than the Enzo.
kronz writes...
I frankly cant think of a cooler car than the Enzo.
I can think of plenty, including the DB9 and the F40. I dont much care for the Enzo at all.
Like he has said time and time again, its got nothing to do with "class", its entirely his opinion of what car Kristin Scott Thomas, and now some newsreader, would think was cool if you drove up to her front door in it. Id much rather have the DB9 or the M5 or the SLR than an ugly piece of red carbon fibre strapped to a Ferrari V12.
I'm not really a sportscar kindof guy... but the DB9 makes me hope the teacher doesn't call me up to the front of the class. :P
That UKP1500 car challenge thing was priceless as was the asking the audience if they'd move any cars around.

The DB9 is supposedly superior to the Vanquish in most ways, from gearbox to interior.

The Enzo only turns heads with its sheer ugliness and the prancing horse badge. I know exactly what an M5 is, and i also know that the Enzo is just a little bit on the fast side of speedy, but its not a car i would ever want.
Now a Mercedes-McLaren SLR, thats a supercar i would like to have. German engineering, Italian speed and the good looks that vanished between the F40 and F60 Enzo.

Yea the SLR is just a tricked up SL55 motor in a carbon body. It's more a GT car than anything fast around a track, too heavy to compete with a Carrera GT or Enzo, but wonderful to go for a long drive in i reckon.
I would prefer an RS4, M3, M5, M6 or SLK55, SL65 or anything from Porsche over a Ferrari. Ferrari is just wanky richness to me, plus if you join the aus ferrari club (it one exists) only a handful of people would turn up. Joing Eurocca.net or if in a BMW, dtmpower.net you can have heaps of people turn up for club meets.
I like Tiff better than the fat blading guy. Tiff actually seems to be able to drive a little better and has racing history if im correct. The little fat man and his lanky counterpart seem more like any other Tv presenter, bit more of entertainers than drivers.

It's called exclusivity - you don't see 500 Ferraris on the way to work/school etc. everyday like you do with Falcons and Commodores now do you? Anyway, regardless of attendance numbers, you could always meet Simon Hackett there...

Yea i would actually, living in australia makes it a totally useless car for me to own. It's purely designed for track work, nothing else, it looks like a toy as well. Enter 911 Turbo or a GT2, I'd prefer one of these, much more flexible, spare parts are cheaper and generally easier to drive, the ferrari F1 shift in the enzo is too harsh for daily driving.

Well I'd rather have friends. Okay would you goto a club which had yourself and 3 other guys OR something like dtmpower or eurocca and have minimum of 20? All of which are genuinely interested in cars and not compensating for the extra space in between their legs.
Also you can't really tune an Enzo, there is no personality to it. An tuned M6 with Hartge body kit and wheels, that's got personality!

You can't register them to drive them on our roads in the first place. It's the sort of thing you put on a truck and take to the track. Even if you could drive them in Australia, the shocking standards of our roads would see the Enzo ruined within the first 500 metres of driving on most roads. It's a supercar, not a supermarket special for picking the kids up with.

That really is a stupid statement. Yes, you really need to personalise a car that cost some $AU 1.8 million of which there are only 9 in the Australia, don't you?
Why on earth would you want to modify a Ferrari Enzo? You'd slash its resale value with every twist of the modifiers spanner, and quite frankly you'd be stupid to even consider such a move.

Considering that the car is not so practical as a daily car one would presume that it would spend a fair amount of time on the track. All circuits are different and therefore you need to tune the car specifically for that particular track. I don't think the Enzo is all that easy to tune in that regard. I believe that is what Ben Morgan is saying.

Your one of those people who like white AU falcons aren't you?
You personalise cars so you can say: This car is unique, there is not a single car in the world that is exactly the same. Yea i drive an Enzo... its like the same as everyone elses, so yea.
If i personalised an e46/e36 M3, i can compete in a drift contest and then go and compete in a hill climb. I can promise you that an Enzo cannot win both competitions, unlike an M3 or a Skyline.... Let alone be able to drive home at the end of the day.

Well there are all of 399 Ferrari Enzos on the road worldwide, it's not exactly an M3, STi or V8 Commodore which every man and his dog happens to drive. They make more of those each month than there will ever be of the Enzo, so hence I think personalising an Enzo is something hardly worth doing.

It looks fantastic, it has all the style that the Enzo lacks. Its those ridiculous holes in the chassis near the wheels that do it, trying to cash in on Ferraris (now vanished) F1 dominance by giving it pseudo-F1 styling. Them and the raised rear wheel arches.
The F60 is just a hideous car, they really need to sack the designer that came up with it, along with whoever designed the rear end on that new Ferrari Americana or whatever it was.

Like that no, since it is a new car, but it really needs to be styled in something other than the ugly facade it has now. Hopefully Ferrari recovers from this attrocity to do something special with the F80.

I thought the cars under 1500 was a great segment, you kind of knew the Jag wouldn't make it anywhere but it was a good fun episode. That said, I haven't watched episode 6 yet, just about to view it now.
OMG! the DBR9 racer pwned ....i sooo want one */drooools all over the carbon fiber body ;p *
the sound was incredible when the stig let it go off the line
the mclaren wasnt too shabby either ;)
...back to playing GT4 i guess
Tommo writes...
I wonder why they didn't get a lap time for the carbon fibre DB9 which will be sold?
Because it isnt street legal - they've said it before, the only cars that go on that list are ones that can go over a speed bump. The special racing version definitely cant do that.

Yet they got a time for the DBR9. I think it would've been worthwhile to see how similiar they DBRS9 and the DBR9 are.

The DBR9 doesnt go on the board though, it was just something fun for them to drive - the actual fastest time around the track is held by an old F1 car at about 58s (i think), but that doesnt make it to the hot lap list for the same reason.
NTRabbit writes...

and then after that they showed the DBRS9 which is the version of the DBR9 that will be sold.
smarm is saying they should've tested both!
Some Top Gear news for you (im guessing this will be covered in tonights ep as well) - Jezza (during what he believes he did in prep for his Sunday Times car review of the Vauxhall (Holden) Monaro VXR) has slipped 2 discs in his back and has been told he cannot drive for at least 2 months.
Supposidly all the driving stuff for Top Gear is already filmed, only the studio fillers are done the wednesday before the show.
Will tonights ep still be on? I was thinking maybe they would just continue the coverage of London on the BBC instead..
Damn they cut away from topgear about 5 minutes into it, and never came back..
Oh well, i guess it was to be expected with all the stuff thats going on in London
So, it looks like Sabine will drive instead of JC. She did a fantastic job in the transit van, overtaking other cars!
Looks like Sabine Schmidt - the blonde woman pro racer from the Nürburgring Jaguar episode - is going to be doing all the track testing in Clarksons place for the second half of the season, or if the entire seasons worth has already been shot then it will be footage for next season. Pretty cool I say, she's on awesome driver and pretty good looking (in my opinion at least)
To finish, "Some say that he lives in a tree, and that his sweat can be used to clean precious metals - all we know is that he's called The Stig"

From what I've read and seen my vote is that it's Damon Hill remember when he did his stint in the Suzuki Liana a couple of weeks back JC hinted at it when he said ' A lot of people think that you are the Stig let me smell your breath.. ah yes pure Magnesium' which was the same thing he said about the Stig the week before.... No, her constant squeeling drives me nuts, I hate her. It's the main reason I skip most of the segments she does, her voice simply irratates me.

A driving comp between VBH and Sabine would be interesting.
I get the impression that the difference between Fifth Gear and Top Gear is that the former is a show about cars, the latter is light entertainment that happens to have cars in it. And, oddly enough, I enjoy Top Gear a lot more than Fifth Gear. Go figure.

guys, do you think those race around europe is fake? From the camerawork
I mean, the camerman would have to have a leet car to catch up with jeremy, and sometimes get ahead of him, get in position, wait for the car to pass, then jump back into car and start the chase all over.
looks fishy to me :P

I would have thought that they would take the footage and then edit it back in Guildford, just like making a movie. It's almost never shot from start to finish. They usually group similar scenes and then edit it in the end....
Unless it's the Matrix, then it is shot from start to finish ;) LOL

I was thinking the same thing, but they'd probably be using a heli to move the camera's most of the time. I can't remember off hand but did they have any outside pictures of the SLR on the autobahn? I think they were all from inside the cabin which would just leave the slower roads for the cameramen to be on. That said, they would have to be speeding to pass Jeremy because he would have been at the speed limit the whole time... except when the speed limit was 60-and a bit...
Tommo writes...

You'd imagine that Clarkson would have to take rest stops here and there. Perhaps the film crews caught up every time he pulled over to fill the tank or take a leak, and then started filming again just after they got back on the road?
Would be the most plausible explanation I can think of.
I mean, the camerman would have to have a leet car to catch up with jeremy, and sometimes get ahead of him, get in position, wait for the car to pass, then jump back into car and start the chase all over.
The leet car that they use is the ford mondeo. From what I've read on the finalgear forums, they use multiple camera crews, spread over the course. As he mostly has to stick to the speed limit, it's not a big problem to film the chase scenes, the bits where he doesn't (ie. german autobahn), are the bits that only have in car camera shots.

Anyone happen to see the article in the motoring section in Saturdays(?) Advertiser about the Ford GT? Jeremy made it into the article because of his awful luck with the car, you'd think that Ford would be treating Jeremy a bit better considering how many people watch Top Gear.
latest episode is pretty good!
not sure if it was because of the particular cars being tested but the stig's driving around the top gear track appeared sub par.
hot hatches segment was interesting, although always having to do the bhp to kW conversion can become tiresome.
the segment on the BMW M5 was great, really have to wonder why the car doesn't just come with the 'M' mode pre-selected. the sat-nav can easily be disabled, just don't enter a destination! silly jeremy ;p

Yeah but it isn't just the sat-nav, the radio seems to be a rather big problem as well and not to mention trying to change from FM to AM while your driving. Its very well that he loved the car in M mode when he was out in the country and no other cars were in sight, but when your stuck in the traffic in the morning it'd become very frustrating driving that car. It was pretty funny when the sat-nav was telling the Stig where to go.
For some reason it just wasn't on tonight, i watched it yesterday though, and i'm pretty sure it would have been the same episode
But still, they didn't even replace it with anything important, just some random and boring show..

I'm sure that it's not as bad as he was making out - he was probably trying to prove a point about how he didn't like the interface of the car.
Let's face it - anyone that can work out how to log on to Whirlpool would love to sit down for an hour or two and get the car set up just the way they like it.
However, someone that has trouble programming a VCR is going to be really infuriated with it.

Sounds more like a Fifth Gear clone to me. Half hour format, token female etc. The only blatantly TG-like bit is the Hot Lap with their mystery driver, 'The Chip'.
Stahly should make it reasonable to watch - he's definitely one of Wheels' better writers, and is almost Clarksonesque in his writing style. Whilst I don't have overly high hopes for Drive TV, it should be at least semi-decent.

The Car Show is just a big advertisement it seems like to me.

It was DriveTime. Michael Stahl hosted that one, too. Unless you're thinking of that godawful thing with that trumpet player and that bird that used to be on Play School ...
Of course, the Top Gear format we now know and love wasn't around back then, and the producers of DriveTime obviously didn't have the inspiration or foresight of Jeremy Clarkson to draw upon.
Remember, back in 1998 when DriveTime was made, Top Gear was in its old incarnation. A very good, very competent show ... but - in hindsight - quite dry, along the lines of DW's Auto Sport und Motor.
What worries me about Drive TV is that someone like Harold Screwball from the Australian Pedestrian Association or whatever his bullshit one-man-whingebag lobby group is called will complain about The Chip promoting unsafe driving, thus effectively causing Drive TV to be heavily watered down should it make it to a second series.
I'll be watching it, and no doubt Drive TV will end up on Channel BT if it's half decent.

oh well ...
suppose it's alright so far.
Yeah its very tame compared to Top Gear or Fifth Gear..
And whats with the constant non stop music, bad music at that, they dont even show us how the car sounds.
Just makes it feel cheap and tacky.
Yeah, name will take a long time to get used to but I've just realised why they called it that, like a "computer chip". Still could of found something that didn't sound so much like The Stig.
It seems ok, but a bit too scripted. The rent-a-crowd is the worst. And also 'the chip', surely they could have come up with something more original. Though I guess most of the audience would never have heard of the stig.
that was my first guess in the sms comp, it sms's you back to tell you if youve got it right or not.
How can you compare the Megane to the WRX?!?
LOL They are reviewing the Renault, yet they are also giving one away in the competition, and Renault is listed as one of their official partners...
Objective review.. i think not.
Ah, cheers.
I agree rent-a-crowd was awful, well hopefully the show gets better and people actually want to turn up.
The show is advertiser funded, hence the continous plugs for Shell Optimax & Bridgestone.

bacco|007 writes...

but what kind of arrogance do you have to have to claim that the Renault was overdesigned. Certainly none if you work on a shoddy car show like that. And the chip? I mean who the hell tries to hustle a car around a track by getting it sideways? Can they not afford a black helmet? This show was a complete joke. Not entertaining, or funny, just annoying, boring and basically a complete pile of dogs droppings.
Hmm.
It's better than The Car Show.
However, it did read a little too much like an infomercial.
You can sort of tell they're on a low budget. And perhaps Stahly should stick to writing - he didn't seem all that natural in front of the camera.
Wow, this show was worse than I thought it would have been.
The crowd was absolutely bored stiff, one of the guys in the back was looking at the roof at one point.
And what was with the laughter, that was about as natural as an ashtray on a motorbike.
And 'The Chip' must be some deadshit VL Commodore driving yobbo, surely they could get an actual race car driver that knows that getting it totally sideways during a timed run doesn't help your time.
I was _very_ disappointed, as someone mentioned, way too much music, too little burnouts.
I'll go out onto a limb and say 'The Car Show' is better, at least they don't try and imitate Top Gear. If you are trying to imitate something that has been around for ages and absolutely rocks, you have to do a much better job than 'Drive'.
Tone. writes...
You can sort of tell they're on a low budget.
They are on a ~$100,000 budget, so they've got some money to play with.
On a side note, I think this show could get better if they stopped trying to be like Top Gear so much.
Get rid of that sleep deprived audience and they'd have a good show.

get rid of the audience, the presenters and the chip and then youd have a better show. It was woeful.
what ever happend to that car comp the had on top gear two seasons ago...remember where the people had to vote for 5 cars and they would do up the winnig car....i think the mini won and they were meant to show it last season...
what the heck happened?
eXtreme writes...
Man you cracked me up dude LOL, I've never seen Fifth gear but because of this I wanna watch it! I've seen a couple off Tiff's reviews back when he was on TopGear but thats about it....

Top Gear and Fifth Gear are British shows ... hence would be harder for them to find VL Commodore Yobbos.

This is what I wrote in:
I have to admit; even 'The Car Show' outdoes 'Drive'.
Why on earth would you guys even bother trying to duplicate such a highly successful series such as 'Top Gear'? It outdoes 'Drive' ten fold.
The audience in 'Drive' is totally dead to the world, they wouldn't even know what time it is, let alone what on earth is going on.
And 'The Chip'?! What on earth are you guys trying to pull, if you guys even bothered watching 'Top Gear', you would see that 'The Stig' actually knows how to drive! Unlike 'The Chip' who keeps power sliding each corner, which doesn't even posses and increase in the total lap time.
To be perfectly honest, before this show even becomes remotely interesting or watchable, the cloning of 'Top Gear' needs to cease, you will never match or surpass the pure watching pleasure of 'Top Gear'.
And lastly, why would you even bother doing a road test on a Renault when they are one of the show's sponsors?!
Oh I love it, it just keeps getting better.
Have a look at Alison's driving career (or lack thereof):
Allison Cratchley
Talented Actor/Presenter Allison Cratchley launched her acting career in 1995 with a regular role as Constable Emma Woods in the hit series ‘Water Rats’. Allison thrived on six years of action packed experiences where she performed all her own stunts, including scuba diving, jet skiing, boat chases and combat. She has also starred in Australian feature films “The Finder” and the high octane, turbo charged action drama about fast cars “In the Red”. Allison’s popularity on Water Rats led her to presenting on the Footy Show, Sydney Weekender and hosting the Dally M Awards. In 2002 Allison hosted “Get Over It” a makeover show for the ‘unlucky in love’ on Arena at Foxtel. With a passion for thrills and spills Allison is looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead with her new presenting role on ‘Drive’. Allison is also currently completing an associate diploma in Journalism
EDIT: For those interested, the lap time this week is 54s.
Well, I've sent my feedback to Drive:
It's nice to see an Australian attempt at a quality car-related TV show. Up until now, I've had to rely on the odd VHS tape of Top Gear that mates have taped off Foxtel for me. However, your show - whilst you guys were obviously trying to make a good program - fell short of my expectations.
A short list of suggestions that I feel would improve your show substantially follows:
(1) Ditch Alison Cratchley.
(2) Get Michael Stahl to write the scripts as well, possibly with help from some of the Motor guys, such as David Morley and Paul Cockburn.
(3) Get a chase car with a camera on board. Motion shots during the road tests do add something, just ask Top Gear or Fifth Gear.
(4) If you can't do a 'studio audience' properly, don't do it at all.
(5) Don't review stuff you're trying to sell/give away. Your credibility went down the toilet as soon as the clueless Cratchley bint started crapping on about how she doesn't like the plastics in the car, but she loves the rest of it. Puh-leeze ...
(6) Sell the show to 7, so that Grant Denyer can be involved somehow. He can drive and has some personality.
(7) Ditch Alison Cratchley.
(8) Replace 'The Chimp' with a real racing car driver, not just the person in the floor crew that happens to be able to do the coolest handbrake turns.
(9) I know you have to watch your P's and Q's, but couldn't you manage to get Stahly to do at least ONE burnout? if Jeremy Clarkson can do them, why not Stahly?
(10) Ditch Alison Cratchley.
I wouldn't be so critical were it not so blatantly obvious that Drive TV appears to be the result of a back seat gropefest between Top Gear and Bright Ideas.
I trust you'll use my constructive criticism to improve your show.
I hate it how when they talk, they make it shamefully obvious they haven't got a clue or even care about what they're saying, but rather they are just trying to recall their prescripted speech.
And those fake body language expressions the guy does and trying to pathetically put emotion into his words when it is purely all just a shitload of scripted sentences just angers me how people like that can be so successfully. No real talent, just looks like they came out of how to be successful on TV lessons.
This thread is getting a little off topic. Maybe we should leave Drive talk to another thread before readers think we're dissing Top Gear!!!

Unfortunately, when it comes to people with motoring knowledge who have done TV, there really isnt much to choose from in Australia. It's why the same few faces keep re-appearing, and why thse programs fail to create any real interest.
Top Gear for example, its the personalities that carry the show. It doesnt really matter what they're reviewing, its fun to watch nevertheless. Stahl comes across as a boring prat.

Perhaps. No I agree totally with you BUT if it was YOUR car and YOUR money WHO would you trust. Personally I would trust Clarkson has he has a bigger audience. Lets face it the vehicle manufacturers are looking for maximum exposure. They could give the car to Mark Skaife but who would a gibe a $h!t?
I mean in a 'who is more likely to fsck up my car' sense, not a 'who can be the biggest git and get the most laughs on tv' sense.

All I have heard is that its been picked up (by the ABC I think), no mention of when they are going to show it, or even if they have taken the real episodes or the awful cutdown versions being made for the US - same episodes, but with Star in a reasonably priced car and some other "British" content removed.

Not listed for tonite, i believe it's starting next week.
I searched the SBS website for "Top Gear" and it showed up at 7.30pm on Mon 12/12/05.

7:30pm, 12th December according to www.sbs.com.au/whatson/i...gdate=12:12:2005
Woohoo! Wonder which series it will be?
In this episode, the Aussie Holden Monaro is tested against the best of British and American car technology on a Welsh beach.
Was that in series 5 or 6? I can't remember

Cheap second hand cars are in abundance in the UK as was proved when they have previously bought second hand cars for under 100 pounds. Unfortunatley the same cannot be said over here in Australia where to get something equivalent you would be looking at WELL over $3,000.
I'm really starting to lust over the F430. I think that was the biggest grin I've seen on May's face in a while and when a car can make even Captain Slow drive it fast it's normally something fairly special.
I like the preview for the ep in two weeks time:
On this week's Top Gear - the biggest challenge yet - can Jeremy in an £830k Bugatti Veyron beat the boys in a light aircraft flown by Captain Slow? What is faster a car or a dog, and Alan Titchmarsh is the 'Star in a Reasonably Priced Car'.
Next week is the 10,000 pound supercar challenge, should be a corker if it's like their other challenges.

That was a great episode, mainly because I love the Zonda.
The Ferrari's I think have been lacking in the design department since the Enzo came along. Even upclose at this years Sydney Motorshow I didn't think they were all that much compared to say the Lambo's.

ok this may be a bit old but does anyone remember season 5 (not last season but the one before that).
they had this segment going where you would vote on 4 old school cars and at the end of the season they would restore it (i think it was called "restoration rippoff") and show it to us at the start of season 6 (last season)
i think they had a Mini
the queens mother mother old range rover
jeames Deans porsche/lotus
and another one
they announced the winner, the mini, on the last episode of season 5 and it was meant to be unveiled at the start of season 6 but never happened
does any one else remember this
Yeah I remember this... Perhaps it's taking a bit longer then expected.
I really wish they did up the car from A Clockwork Orange

Ahh what a way to start the episode, the Zonda F mmm!

That said, the £10,000 Supercar Challenge was one of the best things I've seen on TG. It was highly amusing and action packed.

Yeah i'm interested to see that. The Veyron has alot of power but it's also a bit porky :|
They both have almost identical power to weight ratio's
Zonda F = 510 hp/tonne
Veyron = 520 hp/tonne ish for the production model.
I'd tip the Zonda simply due to the lower weight.

Your calculations are correct - and Jeremy did say it'd empty the tank in 12 mins at 400km/h. Would be cheaper to take a jet. :)
OMFG.
That Bugatti ... whoah!!
Not the best race ever, it did seem a little scripted. However, it was still entertaining. That said, that car was the real star. To be honest, I have difficulty remembering which cars Clarkson used in the previous races. However, I won't be forgetting the Veyron in a hurry.
SM writes...
The Veyron won't be available in Australia anyway. Their only making LHD, not RHD from what I read on Carguide.
Not many people will be rushing in to buy one, I suppose.

There would be a few. We have fair few millionaires here :)

Last one was an SLR vs a Boat, one before that was a DB9 vs a Train, and the one before that was a 612 vs an Airliner :)
Something Broke writes...
The order was DB9 , 612, SLR, and the Veryon
To be fair, the first 3 cars - whilst each are very good in their own right - do pale into insignificance in comparison with the Veyron.
I vaguely recall Clarkson driving the others, but I was more engrossed in the story and the race rather than the details. This most recent race ... well, the Veyron was the star.
You should all read Jeremy Clarksons review he wrote. Pretty much exactly the same facts as what he said in the show :)

I only just recently started watching Top Gear and I must say they are a bunch of dicks with not-so-funny jokes. I'd still watch it though. I find 5th Gear much more appealing though, maybe because I started watching it first.
BTW who remembers the episode from this year i think where JC said "Bugati are trying to build a car with 1000 HP that goes 400 kmh, like that will ever happen, ho ho ho"

I thought you said you only just started watching it? I'm pretty sure that was series 5 which was the end of last year/beginning of this and is on SBS at the moment.
Top Gear shits all over Fifth Gear IMO, mainly because of the photography and spectacular locations. It is a beautifully shot show.
Edit: I still do like Fifth Gear though and watch it each week.
Yeah, i got a couple of them recorded, so I watched the one with the comments about the Veyron (Land Rover on the mountain, Viper) and the one aired on SBS (the Monaro-Jag-XC300 shootout).
I find 5th Gear a bit painful. Tiff and Vicki were better on Top Gear. Fifth Gear is similar to how Top Gear was about 10 years ago - fairly factual and bland. They test the cars and talk about new safety inovations etc. Yes Tiff is a great driver, but that doesn't make up for the fact that now days 5th Gear are trying all these crappy special effects which ruin their films. For a while it was the constant use of a fish-eye lense. The test of the M6 told me nothing I didn't already know and all we really saw were over exposed, blurry shots of an M6 oversteering around the same corner over and over again.
Still, I guess I should be thankful that I can finally watch a car program with Jason Plato without putting up with Mike Brewer (Channel 4's now discontinued Driven).

Yeah me too.... No jokes, no humour, just facts..... I enjoy everything about Top Gear except the "Reasonably Priced Car"part where they interview someone.... Except when its an F1 driver :)
Did anyone see the last episode of 5th gear, hmm well if thats the best cars they could come up with I think they need to take a permanent holiday. Sif a M5 is betther than a Zonda F infact they failed to drive the Audi RS4 which would have smoked the Porshe as best car

Yeah for me it all depends on whether or not I know who the celebrity is, and whether or not they are just plain boring. Some are good, some are not, and some are saved by great footage of the "practice laps" :P
There's a "Jeremy Clarkson - Heaven and Hell' DVD out and its a lot of fun to watch. Same Top Gear-ish jokes, but those jokes don't get stale do they? :P
Sigh, another old ep..
That one on just then was from 10th October 2004...
One of my favourite eps though.
I quite enjoyed the show tonight.

They're all going to be old eps on SBS. It's series 5.
Considering that only make about 20 episodes a year, and a bare 18 this year, I dont think it will take SBS too long to go through the back catalogue.

Taking it off from where? This is only the second episode on SBS, I highly doubt its leaving there yet. Its also the biggest show on BBC2, so I doubt its going to vanish from there either. Unless you are mistakenly referring to the fact that the episode on the 27th of December in England is the last one for the current season?
Hey I think it's a great show. Dispite being old episodes. If you haven't seen Top Gear then it's just great to see them road test some of the best cars around, or what supposedly are the best cars... till you realise you pay all that money and the gear knob falls off. :D
I'm glad they did that segment on the small cars. I've been looking at some small cars. The Citron looks nice, except I hated the steering wheel. Lucky I lost interest since Top Gear says Citron just make crappy cars that fall appart.
Last night was not a very interesting episode (unlike last week) they did hardly any driving and way to much talking in the studio. They had some of the nicest cars and wanted to see them really put to the test.

I think they're running 8 episodes only.
SBS bought the rights to 2 seasons, probably 5 and 6, total of 20 episodes. Seems just a bit wasteful for a network with as low a budget as SBS to buy 20 and show less than half.
How long will it be before cable pulls this one off sbs as well...

AFAIK, the TG we see here in Oz on SBS and payTV is not the same as the original show in the UK. I've seen shows called "TG Extra" which are the repeats shown later on another BBC channel and they're apparently the ones distributed to BBC World. They've definitely had some content omitted, and due to music licensing issues, their "soundtracks" are often different as well. As such the shows that the rest of the world sees aren't quite as "good" as those aired in the UK... but they're still very much worth watching.. :)
It's on today in UK.

Indeed :/
So from what I gather (I hadn’t had a chance to talk to him directly), Vuk didn’t have access to his PC and had to resort to using his dad’s PC to record this week’s Top Gear. However, it was too slow or something and resulted in a bad rip. So, no Vuk rip today. I’m also told that it reairs on Sunday though and hopefully he’ll be able to capture it then.
FYI - UKNova released a 350mb version a few days back. Perfect sync etc.
From reading the finalgear web site there won't be a VUK rip until next week, after the show has a repeat broadcast.
Did anyone else notice they used Splinter Cell 3 music for the soundtrack with the race against the greyhound? :S I thought that was pretty cool.

Shame I used Chan BT to get all series shown already ;-)
I can't believe the SBS has the audacity to show one year old episodes of this show. Let me think... why do people download TV series'?
Far be it from me to start rumours, but I do, from time to time, perpetuate them... :P
I think a good guess for the identity of "The Stig" might be, believe it or not, Tiff Needell. Whilst he is the lead host of Fifth Gear, he's also been a Top Gear presenter in years past, so certainly has (had?) a working relationship with Clarkson and the BBC. It also makes sense that if they had a presenter from another network contracted to perform a certain job, it would have to be kept hush-hush, hence the disguise.
One of the major factors I think is that we've seen The Stig drive a current F1 car around the Dunsfold track (the airfield where the show is based), and they don't just let anyone drive those things... too much money at stake. As Tiff is an ex-F1 driver, he could certainly do the job safely, and he IS a superb driver.
I've been watching each episode VERY carefully, looking for ANY signs that might give the game away... brands of driving gloves and racing suit (The Stig seems to wear Alpine Stars gear, altho this, of course, could purely be a sponsorship issue), normal position of hands on the wheel, posture in the car, the gait with which they walk, relative height... all the things I can think of which might be used to identify him.
Watch carefully next time and see what U think... :)

It's called "cost" and "licensing". They probably don't have much of a choice. Perhaps Seasons 5 and 6 are the latest that are available to other networks.

Perry was the black stig from the first two seasons (he "died" at the end of series 2 by driving off an aircraft carrier). The current stig's identity is unknown, even by Jeremy himself.
Nobody knows who the current stig is regardless of the theories - there's a good read here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stig.
By the way, according to www.finalgear.com, a special episode will air on Feb 12th in the UK:
Car ice hockey, car ice skating and a ski-jumping Stig in a snowmobile are some of the highlights of Top Gear’s version of the Winter Olympics. The team filmed in Lillehammer, Norway, for a show that will air on Febuary 12 to coincide with the real winter games in Turin. “Jeremy won on style,” said Andy Wilman, the producer. “He did some spectacular James Bond power slides. Torvill and Dean eat your heart out.”
Obviously it won't air in Australia, but thought some might like to know........

The F1 car on Top Gear was driven by Renault's test driver dressed as the Stig.
This happened with a few cars. The MC12 for instance was driven by it's owner.
One theory is that they use two people for the stig, depending who is available. One of them appears to be a rally driver, hence the guess that it is Colin McRae. The most common theory is that the Stig is Daemon Hill, because he just happened to be onsite one day when the celebrity for the evening failed to show up. He stood in, causing a lot of speculation.

U might wanna keep in mind that most of those statements on the Wikipedia are marked as "citation needed".. ie, they're unsubstantiated claims, so perhaps not the best idea to intimate your points as fact. Unless of course U have the evidence, in which case U should feel free to add to the Wiki... ;)
Never mind tho... I won't believe the recent newspaper article either until it's corroborated by other sources.

And I'm guessing you're referring to Damon Graham Devereux Hill, son of 2-times World F1 Champ Graham Hill. I'm sure he "drives like a daemon" just as much as his father did, but I expect he isn't one... :P

Yes, that is true, but they're pretty widely accepted. I think Renault actually revealed that it was their test driver from what I read at www.finalgear.com. Not sure if the guy who apparently drove the MC12 admitted it.
I won't believe the recent newspaper article either until it's corroborated by other sources.
From memory there has been 3 in the UK naming different people... So yea, I'm ignoring them.

Alright alright! I knew the longer I concerned myself over spelling the more likely I was to get it wrong. I originally had "Damon" but changed it :(

Yeah - or more importantly, sleep :) Hopefully it does the off road stuff well... but it's good to know that the only things Clarkson complained about were the looks (I reckon it looks pretty good) and the air suspension (we're not going to be messing with that too often) and the seat layout (we're only getting 5). It seems pointless watching year old episodes of a show about NEW cars, however entertaining it may be.
Yeah but I dont want to burn bandwidth ... and often rips are grainy though 700mb ones are usually goodness ;)
The fact that it was a year old didnt bother me, most the cars they reviewed arent cars I'd ever afford to be able to or choose to buy so it was more the entertainment value, and the scenery which I enjoyed.
