A fun summer collection!

When it comes to Mike’s 12 Sides of Summer, several elements rise to the surface that make this album a welcome release. First, this is a “summer album” from a member of The Beach Boys, so right there you’ve got me. Second, Mike told me that he recorded these songs because they were (either) “sentimental, or just plain fun to do,” and a third album in consecutive years does – in my opinion – establish Mike as a solo recording artist. When it took him 36 years to release Unleash the Love in 2017 (after 1981’s Looking Back With Love) it was unclear whether he would continue at such a leisurely pace. He hasn’t. After Unleash The Love Mike released the Christmas collection, Reason for the Season in 2018. This year it’s 12 Sides of Summer and it comes at just the right time. Summer.

I can’t stop listening to it! I’m hooked!
It’s Fun, Upbeat, and Rocks! It gets you back into the groove of wanting to go grab your board and go surfing, cruising the streets, and just plain having fun in the sun! I love their close harmony vocals. The album rocks! The production Rocks! (Scott Totten has it going on with the songs he produced!) The band is tight too!
I saw Mike Live and the Beach Boys perform live a few months ago in Salina, Ks. Trust me, they rocked the house! Everyone was moving, standing, dancing, and singing for nearly two hours!
You actually felt the music going thru to your soul!
If you weren’t rocking along with Mike & Bruce and the band, you had to have either been dead in spirit or a total wretched dead pan!

True, people, that Mike Love's not blessed with the best voice, and the one he has is certainly weaker than it once was. True, this is not what anyone could all an artistic statement or a masterpiece of creativity. Yes, it has some flaws... Yes, it is a fairly simple album. BUT... I give Mr. Love all props for returning to recording last year after a lengthy time away and for continuing to put out new material- "new" as in new Love recordings, if not brand new material - via this REALLY ENJOYABLE album! No rocket science here. No "Pet Sounds" or "Sgt Pepper" or "Blond On Blond"... Nothing that serious or heavy. Just a simple, good-time, fun album! And there is nothing wrong with that!

Mike Love’s new CD “12 Sides of Summer” arrived on Friday. A nice collection of songs and thoroughly enjoyable.....uplifting and happy for summertime! I have two favorites above all. First is “Here Comes the Sun”, which I am sure he was inspired to include given his friendship with George Harrison. Nice interpretation, very mellow. My other favorite is “Girl From Ipanema”’which at first you might think is outside the “Beach Boys wheelhouse” but Mike interpreted it beautifully, including the Portuguese lyric. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Scott Totten’s brilliant guitar work.

Go buy this album....it will grab you by the heart and liven up your summer!

The songs I like on this album are California Beach It’s OK (Feat Hanson has a great tempo) now as far as Surfin goes it sounds really awesome I like how Here Comes The Sun goes way better than The Beatles version at least I can understand what it is being said Girl From Ipanema sounds really good I like how it’s being sung in Portuguese Summertime Blues and Rockaway Beach sound really awesome no bad song on this album I own all 3 Mike Love albums

This album is okay but certainly doesn't break any new ground on creativity. The highlight is "California Beach"....it sounds right out of the 1960's from the Beach Boys or Jan & Dean. Notable mention to the Abba song "On and On and On" which Abba wrote and recorded as a tribute to the Beach Boys decades ago. I didn't care for the arrangement on "Here Comes the Sun", but others really liked it so you might too? The rest of the cd is rather bland with either re-released BB songs that are not as good as the original version or new material that is okay but not great.
