Æthelred Mucel was the husband of Eadburh, who was connected with the ruling family of Mercia, and the father of Ealhswith, who married King Alfred the Great,[1][2] and Æthelwulf, who became an Ealdorman of Mercia in 880.[1] Asser's Life of King Alfred describes him as an Ealdorman of the Gaini,[2] who were probably a group within Mercia.[1]
Hardly anything is known for certain about him. A "Mucel" witnessed Mercian charters in the first half of the 9th century: this may be his father.[3]
He may be the Ealdorman "Mucel" who witnessed some charters in Mercia in the mid-9th century.[3][4] He was probably the "Mucel" who witnessed a charter of Aethelred I of Wessex in 868[5] and whose name features on two charters of 897.[1]

Aethelhelm or Æ þ elhelm was the younger son of Ethelred of Wessex(Æ þ elræ d). Both he and his brother were too young to inherit the throne in 871and it passed to their uncle King Alfred the Great (Æ lfred) whogranted them both lands. On Alfred's death in 899 his elder brotherAethelwald contested the succession and was killed. However,Aethelhelm did not and seemed content to remain Earlderman ofWiltshire.
Aethelhelm had two children: Elfleda of Wessex (c.890-918) andAethelfrith of Wessex (c.900-927). Elfleda became Queen consort toKing Edward the Elder (c.871-924) while Aethelfrith lived the life ofa common landlord. Aethelfrith's son, Eadric of Wessex, was granted possession ofWashington in the South Downs of west Sussex. His son, Aethelwerd ofWessex (c.930-998) is known as "the Historian". Aethelmar Cild(c.960-1015), son of Aethelwerd, was a benefactor of Eynsham Abbey. His son was Wulfnoth Cild (c.983-1015) who was Thegn of Sussex but isotherwise obscure. Godwin was son to Wulfnoth and Harold (Harold II)was the son of Godwin. Harold Godwinson, who later became King Harold II, was according tothis genealogy of the House of Wessex - a fact which may have beenhidden by the Normans. Indeed, after Harold's death, the death of hisbrothers, and the death of Edgar Æ theling the other sons of theAethelhelm branch of the Wessex family may be the only source of anextant heir to the House of Wessex.
