How was the Knights Hospitaller order started?
The Crusades were a series of Holy Wars which occurred between about 1095 and 1291 AD. It is estimated that at least 1.7 million people died as a result of the wars. Only about 5 percent of the people who left home to go on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem ever made it to their destination alive.

The Knights Hospitaller was started in about 1080 AD in Jerusalem. Reportedly a group of merchants from Amalfi, Italy, started the group at the Hospital of Saint John in Jerusalem. The original charge of the order was to provide medical care for sick or injured Christians in Jerusalem.
