This museum has grown on me over the years. Their special exhibits are excellent and not to be missed. They have something for every age. When we have visitors they almost always want to go see the hall of dinosaurs - which is one of the best I have ever seen. Like most museums in chicago, they have free days for Illinois residents.

For 2019 the free days are:

Active military personnel and Illinois teachers receive complimentary admission.
Upcoming free days for Illinois residents include:
August 14, 21, 28
September 4, 11, 18, 25
October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
November 6, 13
They usually have a ton of free days in both January and February
$3 admission to families who show an EBT or WIC card (maximum of six people)

Note admission may not include fees to view special exhibits. Visit the museum website for admission details.

For smallest crowds, attend during a bears game after the game starts!

This museum was ok to me at best and I will be
up front this review will seem biased as I have traveled to Egypt and Africa in person. Seeing as that is so, this museum seemed very child oriented the Africa exhibit seemed like it had been made specifically just for kids the Egyptian exhibit was neat but I have been to the Cairo museum in Egypt. The one exhibit I was looking forward to was the China exhibit which I found out is a extra $14 to my disappointment considering the rest of the all access pass features had no interest to me. So I walked away with the story I had been to the museum where night at the museum had been filmed and that was about it.

I seriously underestimated the Field museum. I allowed half a day, and it needs two full days at my level of wonderment.

Because it includes century-old specimens taken from the wild, it is filled with meticulously preserved fauna which are not taken today, and therefore not seen in newer museums. This place is a treasure.

Buy the cheapest admission ticket, and don't go for the latest trendy exhibit since your cheapest ticket will show you enough to amaze you. And bring your best walking shoes - It's a big, place!

[Here I step in where I may not be appreciated: One tires of reading how bad humans have been to the environment, to the point of gross redundance. I tried not to become jaded, and wonder why the intelligent curators can't communicate this with a more appealing touch.]

Went to this museum on a free day-it was great! so much to see! Exhibits are wonderful, well done, with plenty to do. The dinosaur exhibit was awesome, and the special Sue exhibit was great. The South American and Egyptian exhibits were also pretty awesome. We spent 5+hours and only got to see maybe half of the museum.Definitely plan to go again! There are two food options - they have a cafeteria in the basementand another one in the first floor. Prices are reasonable overall. The parking is a little pricey, 25-30$ and it's right in front of the museum. Definitely recommend visiting!

Once a very dated museum, the Field has really worked to update its exhibits and it works. Even the dioramas seem a bit more modern. But the star is the T-Rex exhibit. Many come just to see "Sue," and now, you get to walk thru pre-history through millions of years all the way to the age of the dinosaur. It's one of the best exhibits I've seen.

Spent three hours with the grandkids viewing the mummies, dinosaurs and insects (both live and not). They had a great time with room to roam and wide hallways to run ahead. The exhibit on Insects was a hit with an insect slide and live bugs to hold!
The museum is part of the campus containing the aquarium and planetarium but after walking for three hours both kids crashed and slept on the way home in the car.

Wow - fleshed out Sue is stupendous! She's going on tour soon, so check before you go. The Field is integral to Chicago history, and the taxidermy displays are historical artifacts in their own right. The best way to enjoy it is to step back in time, enjoy the old book smell, peaceful dimly-lit halls, and marvel at how breathtaking the older displays must have been in the days of limited media. Of course there are modern, interactive exhibits as well. There is so much to see and learn, it's hard to imagine any person of any age not finding at least one display worth the visit. Just wish they would streamline entry for members (at the Art Institute you simply flash your card for the scanner and you're in), which is annoyingly cumbersome.

I could have spent 4+ hours to see these two exhibits out of many in the museum. Bugs is new and fascinating. The "petting zoo" is a lot of fun for the kids. The rooms that simulated a bug's environment and were scaled so that the viewer was bug-size was cool for everyone ... especially kids.
Evolution was also very good ... learning about the six mass extinctions and what we know about them was presented in a very clear way. The star, of course, were the dinosaurs.

There’s so much here, I wrote this review because the other 6 reviews rated it way too low. It’s a world class museum with hundreds of rare fossils and dinosaur skeletons. The interior is beautiful and you can’t even see everything in a full day because it’s massive. They charge you separately for certain exhibits but it’s worth it, so just buy the expensive package, I didn’t see the 3 D movie because I’m an adult.
