It means "that is life."

Sorry, no source, except for this language translator ("C'est la vie" is French, by the way).

I can't think of a single American adult I've ever known who didn't know "C'est la vie" means "That's life," usually expressed when a minor misfortune occurs. Some might not know it's French. It's more or less pronounced "Say luh vee."
