About Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards

Schooled in the lyrical rituals of folk music, Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards (vocals, fiddle, cello, bass/guitar) combine their extensive string music background with bold grooves that inspire rock-n-roll hip swagger. Their edgy pop sensibility elegantly stretches the boundaries of what indie-folk can be. Their newest album, BITTER BETTER, was released on July 17, 2020 on Compass Records and the band is just back from supporting The Mountain Goats on their extended August 2021 US tour. Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards throw out the rulebook, creating a beautifully vivid, musically unexpected canvas from their refreshingly unconventional perspective.

Press Quotes

“Processed and organic ingredients tend not to mix well in sandwiches or songs, but there’s a thoroughly likable lilt to the digital-analog mix that is “Bitter Better.” These 11 indie folk mashups are a seamless blend of synthesizers and string music.”

—Associated Press

“Bitter Better, the new album from indie-folk outfit Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards, was always going to be steeped in a sense of joyous, defiant survival from challenging experiences. And it was intended to make people want to dance.”
—Strings Magazine (cover story)

“Atop exceptional production, Cortese offers a calming and cinematic voice that recalls the introspective stance of Aldous Harding and Big Thief.”
—Glide Magazine

About The A-Beez

The A-Beez is Boston based music collective with its roots in soul, funk, and R&B. At its core are keyboardist Amy Bellamy and bassist Aaron Bellamy. The two began their musical collaboration in the early 2000’s as members of the Sam Kininger band (BMG Japan recording artists). This relationship would blossom, as they would go on to work as sidemen and studio/session musicians, backing up numerous artists including Chaka Khan, Beyonce, Terri Lyne Carrington, Elan Trotman, Martin Luther, Cody Chestnut, The Perceptionists, Club D’elf and many more.

In addition to touring nationally and internationally, Amy and Aaron are staples of the local Boston scene, hosting a long-standing (over 14 years and still running) residency at Boston’s renowned Wally’s Café and performing in clubs and venues throughout New England and the East coast. In the years to come they would co-write and compile a catalog of original material that would eventually culminate in the release of their debut album “Never Going Back” which was released in April 2015. They released their second studio album “Say Goodbye” in March of 2018.

Though it can be loosely classified as “soul” The A-Beez have an eclectic and original sound which draws from the traditions of funk and R&B, and is heavily influenced by jazz as well as hip hop. You may detect hints of rock, country, and even classical if you listen closely. The lyrics are deeply personal and honest, the music grooves while remaining melodically elegant and full of subtle complexity. The production is pure and simple without the gloss and fakeness all too prevalent these days.

The A-Beez have been critically acclaimed as:

“…hard thumping bass grooves, on a mission to get every last body in motion”

“…(Amy Bellamy’s) perfectly placed phrasings make the funk all the more delectable.”

“…the funkiest couple on the planet.”

The A-Beez showcase a variety of extraordinarily talented musicians in the live performances, making each show a unique experience. Vocalist Melissa Bolling holds down the front line, with guitarists Wayne Jones and/or Steve Fell, drummers Peter MacLean (Maceo Parker) or Matt Williams hold down the rhythm section. We also feature a host of incredible horn players including: Sam Kininger, Mike Tucker, Andrew Fogliano, Alex Lee Clark, Brian Thomas, Scott Aruda, Tucker Antell, Phillip Young and many more.

About Rachel Sumner and Traveling Light

“Though Sumner has roots in both the bluegrass and classical worlds, this is true-blue singer-songwriter folk through and through, too: achingly clear, and wide open to the world, with twang and tenderness enough to carry us through the fire of an unusually difficult year on its own" - Cover Lay Down

Sumner’s soft voice adds suspense to her meticulous songwriting” - WBUR/NPR

Rachel Sumner may be best known as the former guitarist and singer-songwriter from bluegrass string phenom Twisted Pine, but it is in her recent venture as a solo artist that we are beginning to fully recognize her dynamism as a writer and performer. Whether she’s fronting her new stringband, Traveling Light, or appearing with only a guitar, you’ll be mesmerized by her elegantly intricate arrangements and captivated by the delivery of each and every word. Now, you may be getting the idea that all of her songs are delicate, crystalline confessionals; they are most certainly not. Rachel is both a Willie Nelson and a Patsy Cline of indie-folk - writing the heartfelt but catchy songs and conveying their emotional complexity with candor and an achingly beautiful yodel. And it is her diverse love of pop, classical, country and everything in between that she draws upon to synthesize into her own unique sound.

In 2011, Rachel relocated from the west coast to Boston as a classical flutist, intending only to study Composition and Film Scoring at Berklee College of Music. She didn’t play any other instruments - she hadn’t even thought to strum a string on the guitar at that point. Rachel might have begun her formal training in wind ensembles and orchestras, but folk music was important to her family and had been fueling her musical passion from the very start. While at school, she eventually found herself making friends with bluegrass musicians (some of whom would become her future band mates and collaborators) who encouraged and taught her to play basic chords on the guitar and introduced her to the canon of traditional music. In the short time since, Rachel has become one of the most vital voices in Boston's thriving roots music scene; she has written award-winning songs, toured internationally, and recorded and released four albums. Rachel’s debut solo EP Anything Worth Doing was released in November 2018, and she has begun work on the follow-up to that, her debut full-length record due out in 2022.

About Ward Hayden & The Outliers

Heralded by Rolling Stone as a “modern-day Buddy Holly plus Dwight Yoakam divided by the Mavericks”, Ward Hayden & The Outliers (formerly Girls Guns & Glory) formed as a way to break from the music so commonly found on popular radio airwaves. Their love for early rock ’n’ roll, true country, raw blues and pretty much any kind of authentic American music branded them quickly as anomalous — and electrifying. The song topics run the gambit of love, hope, work-a-day life, the grind, and the results of those experiences on the body and mind.

With a lineup featuring frontman, Ward Hayden, Paul Dilley on Upright/Electric Bass, Josh Kiggans on Drums, and Cody Nilsen on Lead Guitar/Pedal Steel, the band is a musical force to be reckoned with. From heart wrenching ballads, to foot-stompin’ rock ‘n’ roll, whether live or on record, Ward Hayden and the Outliers deliver every time.

Live at the Riverwalk Cafe in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Presented by Symphony NH.

About this event

Hailed by CBC-Newfoundland as “one of the best mandolinists of his generation” and by Vintage Guitar Magazine as “brilliant”, Portland, Maine-based mandolin player Joe K. Walsh is known for his exceptional tone and taste, and his collaborations with acoustic music luminaries including legendary fiddler Darol Anger, flatpick guitar hero Scott Nygaard, folk star Jonathan Edwards, and pop/grass darlings Joy Kills Sorrow have taken him all over the global and musical map. He’s played with everyone from John Scofield to Béla Fleck to Emmylou Harris, and performed everywhere from festivals to laundromats to Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. After a number of award-winning years as mandolinist with bluegrass stars the Gibson Brothers, Joe currently splits his time between an inventive string band called Mr Sun (featuring Darol Anger, Grant Gordy and Ethan Jodziewicz) a duo with Grant Gordy, and his own band. An avid educator, Joe is a mandolin instructor at the Berklee College of Music. He teaches regularly at music camps throughout North America and beyond, and teaches online through Peghead Nation.

Symphony NH is proud to present its second installment of SNH Presents at Riverwalk Cafe with the Soul City collaborative. The parent band, Soul City, is an 11 piece ensemble combined of rhythm section, horns, and vocalists whose motto is:

"You will dance. Resistance is futile."

Due to Covid restrictions, only five members from Soul City (drums, guitar, bass, keyboard, and saxophone) will be performing as the Soul City collaborative as a jazz quintet. But don't you dare think that with less people, they will be bringing less energy! The quintet will be sure to hit all the right notes to rev up your Thursday night!
