First Quarter Moon
There is a surge towards something new but the material world (or steadfast habits) still beckon. It may be challenging to move forward when you feel weighed down by survival issues. Perhaps you want to toss everything and make a clean break.
Action is required, but this is about finding a new type of stability. The old ways/values aren’t cutting it but you still need to anchor yourself as you progress. Now is the time to establish new habits and act on fresh values - if you feel insecure, what changes can you make to enhance your security in this new world?
Mars/Uranus
This explosive conjunction echoes the crisis of the First Quarter Moon. Uranus (ruler of Aquarius) is activated by Mars (actions, anger). Possibilities range from violence to accidents to impulse. Keeping in mind that the First Quarter Square does demand action, know that impatience or sudden anger can be destructive. And, the effects will be permanent.
So how do you handle this? Identify what needs to change then pause before you jump in. Think, then act. Anxiety or even panic will be high, but you don’t have allow these energies to control you.
This aspect will feed off the energy of the Jupiter/Uranus square.
Mercury/North Node
The easy connection between Mercury (information) and the Mercury-ruled North Node will help you make rational (Aquarius) choices (Gemini) that point you towards the future (North Node). Detached analysis/discussion can take some of the heat out of the Mars/Uranus conjunction and remind you that thoughtless efforts will destroy more than anticipated (and you may hurt yourself in the process). Take a step back and visualize the consequences. Bounce ideas off someone you trust.

Aquarius season begins with the Sun’s ingress at 3:39 pm EST on January 19th. The sign of detachment, the fringe, the collective and the future is activated, along with tense squares between Aquarius and Taurus. The Sun will conjoin Saturn (restriction) and Jupiter (expansion), square Mars (action) and Uranus (shock) and finally conjoin Mercury Rx (see dates and degrees below) for a month of shifts, shocks and clarifications.
Aquarius is about freedom from the rules but it’s a Fixed (unbending) sign. It represents the group/society but also the fringe. These issues are triggered every year (with every Aquarius season) but due to the outer planet activations, this year will underline those issues. Watch for the clash of freedom and restrictions to intensify, not only on the world stage but in your personal life. Tension in the Fixed signs can be most difficult to deal with due to inflexibility on either side.
While it’s important to stand up for what you believe in, understand that what’s completely rigid eventually breaks. This season, consider how your place in society/your view of society is shifting. Do you still identify with the same group? Are you discovering that certain “friends” and allies are not who they appear to be? How are others reacting to a newly emerging facet of your individuality?
Aquarius purports to be about everyone- no judgements. The individual is exalted. And this can be true, but when this sign’s energy is distorted the individual becomes bitter and fanatical - just as judgemental as the supposedly “unenlightened” folks who are more traditional. Meanwhile, those who dare to voice opinions that contradict the accepted narrative face new restrictions as they are targeted, shamed and shut down. Who’s free and who’s trapped? Is true liberation possible? I think the answer to the last question is “Yes”- you are truly liberated when you’re no longer afraid to be yourself, no matter who condemns you. This applies to those who break and follow the rules.
These observations and questions are meant to be as impartial as possible- I am not leaning towards one side or the other (in this blog post). I am attempting to illustrate the contradictory nature of this sign and the current astrological climate. I suppose I’m taking an Aquarian stance here (although I’m a Virgo) by stepping back and viewing everything from a distance.

Moon enters Aries (2:07 am EST)

The Aries Moon can stir up passion, anger, boldness or impulsiveness. This primal energy is excellent for starting something in a burst of enthusiasm or tuning into the unrefined core of what you really want/need right now. The harmonious aspect to Saturn ensures there will be just enough restraint to keep things in check; some rules will be active but they won’t shut you down.
The conjunction to Chiron will trigger moments of acute discomfort. Assertiveness will activate weakness and boldness will activate fear. The strongest feelings will be combined with the rawest pain, but the Moon’s sextile to Jupiter can lift you past this- watch for a hint that you’re going to be ok. Keep going and notice how the hurt lessens as you gain momentum and your courage expands.

January 19th kicks off Aquarius season with the Sun’s ingress, and the Sun’s conjunction to Saturn on January 23rd. This season will be about the focus on new rules, new social restrictions and emerging authority.
The volatile Mars/Uranus conjunction in Taurus occurs on January 20th, uniting actions with liberation and shock. There’s potential for extreme violence and accidents, but also extreme freedom. Mars’ square to Jupiter in Aquarius (January 23rd) exaggerates the above with a rush of enthusiasm and giddiness - risks will outweigh benefits (and misplaced confidence) if you don’t move slowly and consciously. And, remember that the coinciding Sun/Saturn influence means there will be enforced limits.
These actions will feed off the energy of January 17th’s Jupiter/Uranus square.
