About
Dominating the skyline for miles around, Stirling Castle is a shining example of Renaissance architecture. Visitors can look out from its high stone walls to the battlefields of Stirling Bridge where great medieval armies clashed to decide the fate of nations. Home to generations of Scottish monarchs including, Mary Queen of Scots, the Castle is an enduring and powerful reminder of our fascinating history.

I was surpried to get free entry into the castle with a English heritage membership, there were several price listings all easy to understand, if you were a new member you got a reduced entry fee but a renewed member gave free access but no discounts in the cafe or shop that is reserved for Scotland heritage members as expected!
It is an exposed site so if windy or wet wrap up well, there is a free guided tour however there were lots of people on it so I toured myself, lots of QR codes to scan for more info but also lots of info of the plaques dotted around! All the staff were very helpful and all to willing to pass on their knowledge of the site enthusiastically! The cafe was welcome to warm me up with a hot chocolate but they did soup and sandwiches as well as a range of hot drinks sit in or out space permitting.
Toilet facilities were clean and the shops were on a traffic light entry system, the buildings had a one way system in place also.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in historic buildings!

The rooms where there were actors , they brought the castle to life … well done to these lovely people … who made a special day for our visually impaired granddaughter …
The ladies who helped up set us the audio at reception.Lots to see and lots of information to take in ( audio was very well presented)
A real step back in time and learned a lot too.
Well done to all the staff at Stirling Castle
Only down side the cafe was a little bit over priced but otherwise would highly recommend a visit here

Beautiful, well kept place with lots to see. I did not have a tour guide so cannot give opinions on that, but it's very easy to follow with the resources they give in the booking email. I would recommend pre-booking to save a little bit of money and be guaranteed entry. The views from the castle walls are stunning. A distant view of the Wallace Monument can be seen from out front.

Exhibits catered to many interests and ages.

I visited on a Sunday and it was relatively busy.

I'd recommend giving yourself 2-3 hours here, especially if you're like me and love to read all of the signs in the exhibits. I was there about 2 1/2 hours, but I skimmed some areas due to not wanting to be in people's way.

My Dad and I visited during a trip to Stirling. The castle was well maintained and the signs informative. Our guide David really made our trip. He was entertaining and knowledgable, and gave us a far better understanding of the castle’s history than had we done it alone. The guided tours were free with the entry ticket and would recommend anyone visiting to join one. We spent 5 hours at the castle.

Came a couple of days ago, saw that you can book online but as we weren’t sure what time we’d arrive we decided to just chance it. We arrived at about 10.30am and were told we could visit but were asked to go onto the website to book the tickets rather than being able to buy at the kiosk. Was a bit of a faff standing outside doing this on our phones but got there eventually! We weren’t give a choice to buy the tickets actually at the castle so I just hope that if someone turned up and didn’t have access to the website they would be more accommodating.

Once inside there are toilets and a gift shop before you enter the main part. A couple of areas are currently closed (the vaults was one of them and a lot of the interactive stuff was shut off) but there’s still lots to see. We were there around 2 hours. There is a cafe (we didn’t use it) and picnic benches dotted around outside so it would be nice in warmer weather to stop and take a wee break whilst walking around the site.

First visit to our local castle using our Historic Scotland membership. It'll be one of many visits I'm sure!

Our 7 and 4 year old enjoyed walking around the castle at their own pace, looking at exhibits and listening to the staff, particularly the ones in period costume. They're all so knowledgeable, friendly and I think they make the castle a class apart.

Unfortunately where it's let down is the Unicorn Cafe where the staff were visibly quite harassed when we visited - you'd think at peak lunchtime hours they'd have all their food out by unfortunately the sandwiches were slow and I heard the next batch of macaroni cheese would be 20 minutes. I felt sorry for the foreign visitors - not a good service nor the quality expected for the price. Be prepared for sky high prices and my tomato and basil soup was salty, tasted like it was out of a packet (not even a tin!) and the portion of bread on the side was laughable (they gave me a broken bit, not even a full slice!).

The grounds are immaculate and great for sitting out on a dry and sunny day or for the kids to have a run around. We didn't see any displays on this occasion and there were still a few exhibits that were not open.

Adults really enjoyed the history and education from the displays so it's a great visit all around.

Other than the cafe, a really great experience. Hopefully on our future visits we can get this review up to a full score. Enjoy!

On 20th April 2022 (my husbands birthday) we went to see Stirling Castle. The whole experience from start to finish was 1st class. All the staff are friendly, helpful and so knowledgeable. Ryan a young man took us on our tour. His enthusiasm and his vast knowledge of the history of the castle was simply amazing. He brought everything alive with his vivid descriptions of battles etc. We spent 3 and half hours there as there is so much to see. One thing, if you book online you save £1.50 each because if you pay when you get there you don't get that discount. I think they need to re-look at why they are doing that. Many people are of an age where booking on line is not something they are comfortable with. The staff are there so let everyone buy there tickets when they arrive without being charged extra. This was a fantastic experience. thank you Stirling Castle Staff!!

I have had several fantastic days out with my family to Stirling Castle. Our most recent visit was at the end of August 2022. Once again we had a spectacular visit to the castle. The castle and grounds are beautiful and the exhibits are very interesting.

The best part of the visit by far were the actors dressed in period costume. They were knowledgeable and witty. We had family visiting from the USA and they could not stop talking about how fabulous the actors were and how much they made their day!

Absolutely amazing! We have just booked for the Tales From The Castle event in November and we are all really looking forward to it. Thank you for another great day! 🙂🙃

We booked online and it was an easy experience to get into the castle. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I really liked how there were free guided tours every half an hour. This really brought the castle to life and the guide was very good. After the tour there was still a lot to see and we spent time looking around. There was a lovely small cafe serving drinks which was nice to sit in. The palace was good and there were live actors inside talking to you as you went around. There was also the kitchens and the Stirling Heads to see. There were plenty of toilets and two shops. The only negative of the visit was our trip to the main cafe for lunch - it was busy and it seemed unclear what queue was for what. I'd recommend having different tills for those who wanted hot food and those who just want a coffee etc - it would feel less stressful. Overall it was a great day out and I really enjoyed it.

We only had about an hour and a half, so we were a bit rushed. This castle and grounds are huge, so you could spend much more time there. It's quite impressive and definitely worth a detour to see it. The views are incredible. The admission is covered under the Explorer Pass (which I highly recommend if you're visiting several sites). It amazes me how many wonderful sites there are in Scotland!
