Sallye Younge

DANVILLE, Va. - Sallye Kemper Younge, 98, formerly of 20 Brown Lane, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center.

Born Nov. 20, 1900, in Henry County, she was the daughter of John William Oliver Younge and Mary Eliza Bradley Younge.

She was retired from Dan River Inc. as an executive secretary for 54 years. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and past national president of the Pi Omicron Sorority.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and is survived by a nephew, Herman S. "Nig" Gosney of Danville; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Dr. Woodrow Giles officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her great niece, Harriet Taylor, 20 Brown Lane.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Willie Younger

CHATHAM, Va. - Rev. Willie Green Younger, 73, of 2108 Marion Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at his residence.

Born in Pittsylvania County on August 10, 1926, he was the son of Ben and Ernestine Irby Younger. He was a retired employee of IPE Industrial Steel of Newark, N.J., and was a member of Rosebud Baptist Church.

He was twice married , first to the late Dottie Turner Younger and second to Gerry Younger, who survives. Survivors in addition to his wife include two sons, Lawrence Younger of Dayton, Ohio, and Sgt. Kenneth Lee Younger of the U.S. Air Force stationed at Minot, N.D.; one daughter,

Ernestine Dansby of Radcliff, Ky.; one step-son, Leon Byrd of Tampa, Fla.; two step-daughters, Scherolyn R. Smith of Jacksonville, Fla., and Beverly A. Shanky of Williston, Fla.; four brothers, Sherman Younger of Chatham, Va., Isaac Younger and Motley Younger, both of Newark, and Albert Younger of Danville; one sister, Lena Johnson of Jersey City, N.J.; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Willie Gene Younger; four brothers, Charlie, Bennie, Montique and Jessie Younger; three brothers-in-law, Preston, Clifton and Houston Turner.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by Rev. Larry Ross and Rev. Hubert White, with burial in the Fairview Baptist Church cemetery.

Ben Betterton

CHATHAM, Va. - Ben Johnson Betterton, 80, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at Piney Forest Health Care Center in Danville.

Born June 13, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Warren Betterton and Sadie Murphy Betterton.

He married Elora Meadows Betterton, who survives.

He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Eunice B. Rowland of Gretna and Janice B. Jenkins of Griffin, Ga.; three sons, Jerry B. Betterton of Chatham, Donald W. Betterton of Eustis, Fla. and Malcolm L. Betterton of Gretna; five sisters, Ada B. Yeatts of Hurt, Mildred B. Reaves and Juanita B. Bush, both of South Boston, Louise B. Meadows of Gretna, and Peggy B. Tickle of Danville; three brothers, James Betterton of Nathalie, Paul Betterton of Cody, and Floyd Junior Betterton of Gretna; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, J.W. Betterton and Rufus Betterton; one sister, Nellie Mae Jones; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Church of God of Prohecy, Java, with the Rev. Edward Pope officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Helen Goode

DANVILLE, Va. - Helen Lee Goode, 78, of 1007 West Stokes St., died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 12, 1920, in Danville, she was the daughter of Charles Buck Hairston and Amanda Jane Harvey Hairston.

She was married to Alexander Goode, who predeceased her.

Prior to her retirement, for many years, she was employed at Dan River Inc. and was a domestic worker.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara G. Davis of the residence; two sisters, Mary H. Millner of Pelham, N.C., and Marie H. Moore of Roanoke; two grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Bishop Major Hairston officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Edith Hines

DANVILLE, Va. - Edith Anderson Hines, 85, of 224 Haymore St., died Sunday, October 17, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after an 18-day stay and two years of declining health.

Born November 2, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of James Crowder and Althea Shelton Crowder.

She was married to Bernard James Hines, who predeceased her Feb. 19, 1995.

Mrs. Hines lived her life in the Danville area where she was employed with Dan River Inc. prior to her retirement. Mrs. Hines was a member of Saint Marks Pentecostal Holiness Church where she was the pianist for 40 years and a member of The Womens Auxiliary, Secretary of the Men and Women's Bible Class and former trustee of the church.

Survivors include one son, B.J. Hines of Ringgold, Va.; one daughter, Carolyn H. Lipford of Pelham, N.C.; two sisters, Mary S. Moore and Louise S. Moore, both of Danville; a dear dear friend, Evelyn Harrison of Danville; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Barbara Elliott; and one sister, Catherine Yeatts.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Saint Marks Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Henry Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Faith Hundley

DANVILLE, Va. - Faith Elizabeth Hundley, infant, of 132 Avalon Drive, died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999, at her residence.

Born Sept. 21, 1999, in Danville, she was the daughter of Rev. the Ricky Hundley and Robin Shelton Hundley, both survive.

She was a birth right member of Trinity Evangelical Friends Church.

In addition to her parents of the residence, survivors include four brothers, Nathan Hundley, Benji Hundley, Levi Hundley and Daniel Hundley, all of the residence; maternal grandparents, James and Nita Shelton of Danville; paternal grandfather, Charles Gary Hundley of Martinsville; and paternal step-grandmother, Margaret Hundley of Martinsville.

She was predeceased by her paternal grandmother, Audrey Webb Hundley.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Tim Satterfield and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.

Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Harry W. Lumpkin

GOOCHLAND, Va. - Harry Woodrow Lumpkin, 86, died Sunday, October 17, 1999, in Meadows Nursing Center at Goochland.

Born November 11, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late William A. Lumpkin and Shellie Elizabeth Conner Lumpkin.

He is survived by his wife Wuanoka N. Lumpkin of the residence, one son James Maylon Lumpkin of Penhook; two grandchildren, Timothy Lumpkin of Stuart and Terry Lumpkin of Hurt; three great-grandchildren Jason Lumpkin, Tyler Lumpkin and Bradley Lumpkin; six step-children; four brothers Elesworth Lumpkin of Danville, Stuart Lumpkin of Chester, Kemper Lumpkin of Rocky Mount and Adolphus Lumpkin of Penhook; three sisters Emelene L. Mathis of Cove, Arkansas, Chappie L. Barbour of Chester and Marie L. Shaw of Denver Colorado.

Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 19, 1999, at the Lumpkin Family cemetery, Penhook by Rev. Wayne Grinnell.

Margaret Scearce

DANVILLE, Va. - Margaret Guthrie Scearce, 79, of 2131 Spencer St., died 9:40 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at her residence.

Born November 15, 1919, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Artie Jackson Guthrie and Helen Wrenn Guthrie.

She married July 21, 1939, to Paul Curtis Scearce, who survives.

Mrs. Scearce was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church for more than fifty years, the Chapel Bible Class and Missionary Circles No. 3 and 9. After more than twenty years of service, she retired from Belk-Leggett and was a member of Belk-Leggett Retirees Club.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Joan S. Hogge and W. Allen Hoge of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one sister, Cora G. Barker of Danville; two granddaughters, Joanna Alaine Hogge of Richmond, Va. and Kelly M. Hogge of Virginia Beach, Va; one great-granddaughter Kiana M. Hall of Virginia Beach, Va.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Freddy Vicks officiating.

The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. and 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Grey Dunkley

CLOVER, Va. - Grey Culley Dunkley, 72, of 11163 James D. Hagood Hwy, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center.

Born April 11, 1927, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Leonard Culley and Mamie Watts Culley.

She married Joseph Edward Dunkley Sr., who survives.

She was a member of Clover Baptist Church and Veterans of Foreign War Ladies Auxillary. She was a retired textile worker with Burlington Industries.

In addition to her husband of Clover, survivors include three sons, Roger Dale Dunkley, Joseph Edward Dunkley Jr. and Aubrey Kyle Dunkley, all of Clover; one brother, John Culley of Greensboro, N.C.; four sisters, Lena C. Yancey of Raleigh, N.C., Gloria C. Russell of South Boston, Ethel C. Everhart and Iris C. Redd, both of Clover; two half-brothers, Wayne Culley and Larry Culley, both of South Boston; two half-sisters, Nancy Matthews of South Boston, and Sharon Church of Halifax; and one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Clover Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Walker officiating. Burial will be in Clover cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Edith Hines
