Michael Collins Jr. is the son of Michael Collins, an American astronaut who flew the Apollo 11 Columbia command module around the Moon in 1969 while his fellow crew members, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, made the first manned surface landing. He was also a test pilot and a major general in the US Air Force Reserves. Collins died of cancer in hospice care in Naples, Florida, on April 28, 2021, at age 90 and his wife, Patricia, died in 2014 after suffering a stroke.

Mike always faced life’s challenges with grace and humility, and he faced this, his final challenge, in the same way. ”
Patricia was no stranger to facing responsibility with inner strength. She was the eldest of nine children born in Dorchester to a politically accomplished family.
Her mother, Julia Kendrigan, was the daughter of Irish immigrants. Her father, Joseph Finnegan, was the youngest of 10 born in County Mayo, Ireland, on a 10-acre plot where potatoes were the dominant crop. He immigrated to Massachusetts and went from hauling buckets of coal to serving in the state Senate.

An eloquent writer who eloquently captured the behind-the-scenes concerns and challenges that astronaut wives faced during the Gemini and Apollo missions, Ms. Collins died on April 19, 2014, at the Marina Bay Skilled Nursing Facility in Quincy of complications from a stroke she suffered in September 2013. She was 83 years old and split her time between Quincy and Marco Island, Florida.
In 1969, before her husband left on the first lunar landing mission when he piloted the Apollo 11 command module orbiting above while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the surface of the moon below, Mrs. Collins wrote to him a poem that included the verse:
Take my silence, even if it is intentional;
Fill it with the joy you feel.
Take my courage, now pretend –
You, my love, will make it come true.

On April 28, 2021, Collins died of cancer in Naples, Florida, at the age of 90.
