Catholics, i have a very important question for you. i know it's long but can you please answer?

ok, so first af all, i'll start by telling you that i don't want to offend anyone with this question.

my whole family is catholic (i'm not btw) so i'm not coming in war mode.

exodus 20:2-5 " I Jehovah am your god, who brought you out of the land of egypt. you shall not have any gods besides me, you shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or in the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth, you shall not bow down to them or worship them, for i your lord Jehovah am a jealous god" and then it keeps going on.

well, my parents go to church but the priest does not teach ANYTHING that's on the bible. everything they teach is from stuff that i have looked for in the bible a lot, and i cannot find.

when i ask my parents about this, they don't give me a straight answer. and when i show them this scripture they only listen but don't stop doing this stuff either.

when i was younger i was catholic, and i asked the priest about a question i had, well he didn't answer me. he said that the bible was only meant to be read by religious leaders and that we must only listen to them.

now that i'm in another religion, i'm finding a lot of stuff that catholics do that is not in the bible.

and i want your input on this.

i know that my parents know that what i'm telling them is true because i'm only showing them what's in the bible, but it's very hard for them to leave all of the stuff they were taught behind.

have any of you ever asked a priest why you guys worship images?

what do you think of the scripture above? you know this is not the only scripture in the bible that mentions this.

do you think the catholic religion follows the bible or man's rules?

and last

what do you think of priests who have admitted that they are atheists?

and of all the things that priests are doing to innocent children?

thank you for your answers.

again i'm not coming in war mode but i just want to understand my parents beliefs a little better, since they don't want to answer my questions.

and i'd really appreciate if your answers had some scripture back up.

thank you.

I'm sorry that the priest at the church your parents attend said all of this, and does not teach from the Bible.

If you look at history (from secular textbooks even) the Church in the Bible is the Catholic Church, and later on denominations broke away from this Church. This is the church that decided which books would be a part of the Bible, so how could Church teachings be unbliblical?

Masses are supposed to have 3 Bible readings on Sundays, and the homily is based on the Gopsel reading. Also, I'm sorry your priest didn't give you good answers about idolatry. We should not blindly believe.

Maybe your parents should switch churches? It does not sound very Catholic.

Anyways, in answer to your questions:

    1) Catholics should not be worshiping images, that IS indeed idolatry. I hope that no one is worshiping a statue or image. Images respresent the people on them. It's like having a photo of family, statues of famous people. Is that considered idolatry too?

    2) I agree 100% with the scripture above. Only God should be worshiped. It is one of the Ten Commandments. It's good that you pointed this out, reading the Bible is a good thing. (:

    3) The Catholic Church put together the New Testament and was the first Church, before there were Protestants. I believe that Sola scriptura, solo scriptura, faith alone etc, are traditions of man. No where is it mentioned in the Bible. The traditions passed down through the Catholic Church was directly from the apostles, whom Jesus entrusted His teachings to. St Peter was the first pope. Jesus said that He would build His church on the rock, Peter, and that Jesus would be the cornerstone. (Matt 16:18-20), and that the gates of Hades (death) would not destroy it. After Peter died physically, someone else would take on this role. That's apostolic succession.

    4) Priests are people. It's extremely unfortunate that they are atheists or have done things to children, and the Church does not condone this. Just because an American murders a bunch of people doesn't make all Americans evil. Just because an atheist starts a charity does not mean all atheists are charitible. People are people.

I hope this helped. If not, please add details. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm arguing here either. I'm glad you are interested in having these questions answered.

    God bless.

Have you ever seen any Catholic bow down and WORSHIP an inanimate object?? That is ridiculous, especially considering the teaching of the Catholic Church absolutely condemns idolatry in every form as "incompatible with Christian life". You can find this in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, under "idolatry". Priests are sinners just like the rest of us. No-one claims otherwise. So were the apostles. Crimes against children are no more common among priests than among any other large group of men, and slightly LESS common than similar crimes among Protestant clergy. How could anything in the Bible confclit with Catholic teaching when the Catholic Church compiled the Bible?? Do you seriously think they included things in their own book that confclited with their own teaching?? With all due respect, you have no way of knowing what the Bible actually says since you have no means of authoritative interpretation - a fact that is obvious from the doctrinal chaos of Protestantism. One thing the Bible DOES say is that Christ intended that there would be ONE Church. Proterstantism exists in open defiance of the will of Christ. How could you expect to find truth in a tradition that contradicts the will of God by its very existence?

Catholics don't worship images, any more than you're physically in love with the photo of the guy you're in love with when you gaze at it. it's something that reminds you of someone else. I don't know what you were taught growing up (it doesn't sound very much), but you really should go and find out more about your own religion (ie Catholicism) before looking elsewhere. I'm not saying that you won't come to the same conclusions, but you don't understand what Catholicism is about, and it will always be an issue for you until you actually *do* understand.

Priests are only human - I've met priests who I'm sure were very holy, but who I just didn't relate to. I've met others who were real inspirations. Priests are only human - they have failings and personalities like anyone else. Honestly - go to a few different catholic churches and find a priest you like, then go to him, explain your problems and put all your questions to him. He will answer your questions much better than we can. But he has to be one that you can relate to otherwise you'll just find yourself disagreeing with him on principle. It's good to have questions, and he should be one who can appreciate your interest in the subject - whatever the outcome.

*then*, when you _know_ what you're rejecting, you can go off and find out about other religions and reject Catholicism if that's what you feel you must do.

I'm not catholic but I understand some of this. The catholic church relies on church tradition as much as the bible - after all it is the original church and when it started the bible didn't exist!

What your priest said about your question is traditional catholicism - they always liked to exclude lay people from reading the bible in case they started to think for themselves. Catholicism IS about the power of the priesthood, or at least it always used to be. It does follow the bible, but as I say, it's own traditions as well. What they force priests to be is so unnatural... and the ones that admit to being atheists are stuck between staying priests or finding another way to make a living.

  • My input is this:

If you want to follow the religion of your parents, then go ahead.

However I do warn you that there are many anti-Catholic influences out there, and it is good for you to know that these people who are against the Catholic teachings and against the church are using a book preserved by the Catholic church in order to argue against it.

The bible was not only compiled and preserved by the Catholic church, but the liturgy can be traced back to the Christians of Antioch. The Maronite Rite of the Catholic church still sings some of their hymns in Aramaic.

It's okay to question because sometimes you get good answers, and sadly sometimes we make decisions based only on our limited knowledge (because we are finite beings and not beings who lived at the time of Christ.) Please take into account these things and many others besides.

For instance, the early Christians did make and paint images of Jesus, Mary and the apostles, because when the catacombs in Rome were dug up, there were many frescos dating to the time of the era of martyrdom (0-300AD) attributed to the early Christians.

The early Christians had no problems with images.

The homily (sermon) at Mass is a reflection on one or more of the readings heard at Mass.

We do not worship images. These are works of art. They remind us of people that we consider holy and good. The crucifix reminds us of the great love that Jesus had for us.

Catholics agree with the verse you quoted. We are not to worship graven images.

Catholics follow the Bible and the rules of men that were called by God to shepherd us - priests, bishops, and cardinals. If you are honest, ou will admit that you also follow your minister.

Priests that admit they are atheists should ask to be relieved of their duties as priests.

Priests that are accused of molesting children are removed from public ministry while the case is investigated. If they are guilty of child molestation, they are removed from public ministry permanently.

The Bible has a lot of different versions out there. Catholic Church has very conservative (basically still rooted in the Middle Ages) veiws. AN example would sexuality (gays to abortion). Religous doctrine is a HUMAN CONCEPT.

    what bible are you using?

you do know that Catholics and Protestants use a different Bible, right? Protestants took out many chapters including 1 and 2 Maccabees.

I bet you are looking for Catholic verses in a Protestant Bible.

also, have you ever heard of paragraphs? you write like you are 11 years old.
