Cunningham Falls is an easy short 1/2 mile hike from the parking lot. The falls are great, easy to climb on, and great for kids. The park's "Leave No Trace" attitude and signs say you are not supposed to climb on the falls, but that is like going to the beach and not being allowed to get your feet wet or go swimming. Probably the easiest set of falls I have been to, most are hours of hiking off the roads. The trail is wide, gravel and small stairs have been put in. There is a more exciting trail through the woods and rocks if your kids are over 5 years old. Takes about an hour including climbing the falls up and down. You could of course stay all day.

The falls are in the Wiliam Houck part of the national park, just off Rte 77, on the west side of Rte 15. Our GPS and Google took us to the Catoctin Furnace - about 5 miles away on the wrong side of Rte 15. Be carefull about that.

We had just gotten some snow in the mountains and I wanted to take my new dog to play in the snow. This looks like a pretty happening place in the summer with a gorgeous lake and a few beaches. Fortunately, I did not go in the summer when dogs are apparently kept away from any play people would want to go. Between Labor Day and Memorial Day, dogs can take the lower falls trail. This was an easy trail to the platforms that went out to the falls. The view from the platform from this trail was not very good--it looked like the platform from the wheel chair accessible route was better, but you can't get between the two platforms without going around to the road. In any case, it was a little disappointing that the platforms were so far from the falls, but I got some decent pictures and my dog got to play in the snow. I plan on returning at some point to do more trails, but realize that this is not an entirely dog friendly park (some trails are okay, some are not...beach is off limits).

The woods and stream are just beautiful. My husband loves to fly fish here too.

Our family really enjoyed a nice, fall weekend at Cunningham Falls. The campground is huge, but there are several loops with campsites, so you do not feel crowded at all. The sites were flat and drained well (good for us in a tent, since it rained most of the weekend!). Our 6-year olds loved the hike to the Falls! The tire park at the other part of the campground was also a lot of fun. We thought it was a perfect weekend getaway.

This is a great place to hang out. The trails to the falls are awesome. We took the long trail and there was a mild rain.. had fun. the falls were not big but good enough to provide a pleasant feeling. You can climb up the steep slopes to reach the near the falls,
